Chapter 16: Chapter 16: Birthday Celebration with Sam
The first rays of sunlight peeked through Selena's window, illuminating her small room in a golden hue. She stretched and opened her eyes, her heart fluttering with excitement. Today was her birthday, and unlike the muted celebrations of the past few years, this one felt special. Today, she would celebrate with Sam. The thought alone was enough to bring a soft smile to her face.
The Morning Excitement
The day started with the usual rush of getting ready for school, but Selena moved with an unusual cheerfulness. Her father had wished her a happy birthday at breakfast and handed her a small gift—a simple bracelet with a delicate charm.
"Happy birthday, my girl," he said warmly, placing the bracelet on her wrist. Selena smiled, touched by the gesture.
At school, she tried her best to focus, but her mind kept drifting to the plans for the afternoon. Sam's words from the previous day echoed in her head: "After school, meet me on the next road. And don't forget to change into casual clothes."
Amelia had been her partner-in-crime for this secret celebration. The night before, they had spent nearly an hour on the phone, planning every detail.
Amelia's Expert Touch
After the first bell rang , Amelia pulled Selena aside to the school restroom. "Alright, time for the transformation," Amelia said with a grin, holding up her small makeup pouch like it was a treasure chest.
"Amelia, I'm not sure about this," Selena said hesitantly, biting her lip.
"Selena, trust me. It's your birthday! You can't meet Sam looking like you're heading to math class," Amelia teased, making Selena laugh nervously.
Amelia helped Selena change out of her school uniform into a casual yet chic outfit—a light blue blouse paired with dark jeans. The blouse complimented Selena's complexion perfectly, giving her a fresh and youthful look.
"Now, for the makeup," Amelia said, pulling out a compact, some blush, and a lip tint. She dabbed a light layer of blush on Selena's cheeks, blending it until it looked like a natural flush.
"You have gorgeous skin, Selena. We're keeping it minimal," Amelia said, applying a touch of mascara to bring out Selena's lashes and adding a hint of the lip tint.
Finally, Amelia gently tousled Selena's hair so it fell in soft waves around her shoulders. "There. Now, look at yourself."
Selena hesitated before turning to the mirror. When she did, her breath caught. She barely recognized the girl staring back. The subtle makeup and casual outfit gave her a confidence she hadn't felt in years.
"Amelia… I don't know what to say," Selena murmured, her voice thick with emotion.
"You look amazing, Selena," Amelia said, squeezing her hand. "And Sam's going to think so too."
A Nervous Departure
The final moment arrived, and Selena's heart raced. She walked out of school quickly, blending in with the crowd of students heading home. Just as planned, she and Sam left separately to avoid raising any suspicions.
Selena clutched her bag tightly as she approached the next road, her heart pounding with anticipation. She rounded the corner and spotted Sam leaning casually against a lamppost.
The Rendezvous
Sam looked up as Selena approached, his eyes lighting up as he saw her. He straightened and gave her an easy smile.
"You look amazing," he said, his voice warm and genuine.
Selena felt a blush rise to her cheeks. "Thank you," she said softly, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear.
"Ready for your birthday celebration?" Sam asked, extending his hand toward her.
Selena hesitated for a moment before taking his hand, feeling a rush of warmth at the contact.
They started walking together, their steps in sync. Though neither of them said much, the silence between them was comfortable. Selena couldn't help but notice how relaxed Sam seemed, as though he had done this a hundred times before, while her own nerves made her hyper-aware of every little detail.
"Thanks for this," Selena said suddenly, breaking the silence.
Sam glanced at her, his smile soft. "You deserve a great birthday, Selena. I'm just glad I get to be a part of it."
His words made her heart skip a beat. For the first time in a long while, she felt truly seen and valued.
The journey to the café was just beginning, but for Selena, the day already felt magical. She couldn't wait to see what the evening would hold.
