Chapter 5: 05 - Whispers in the Dark
The following morning, Noah woke up drenched in sweat. His dreams had been vivid and haunting: flashes of fire, a darkened throne, and countless voices crying out in anguish. Yet one voice remained constant, cutting through the chaos like a knife.
"Find the truth."
He sat up, rubbing his temples as he tried to shake off the lingering dread. Outside, the base was already alive with activity. Soldiers and researchers bustled through the halls, their faces grim with purpose.
Noah knew he couldn't afford to wallow in confusion. If he wanted answers, he had to take action.
The first step was the training room. Though he'd been told to remain confined, Noah knew he needed to test his newfound powers. He couldn't rely on anyone else to understand them.
The training room was a massive space filled with holographic projectors and automated combat dummies. A few soldiers were sparring in the corner, but Noah found an isolated area to avoid drawing attention.
Taking a deep breath, he focused on the energy he had felt during the battle. It had been overwhelming at the time, but now he tried to summon it deliberately.
"Come on," he muttered, clenching his fists.
At first, nothing happened. But as he concentrated, he felt a faint warmth in his chest. It grew steadily, spreading through his limbs like a slow-burning fire.
Suddenly, black flames erupted around his hands.
Noah stumbled back, startled. The flames didn't burn his skin, but they radiated a menacing aura that made his heart race. He waved his arms, trying to dispel them, but the flames persisted, growing larger with every passing second.
"Control it," he whispered to himself. "You can do this."
Across the room, one of the sparring soldiers noticed the commotion. He nudged his companion, and the two of them approached cautiously.
"Hey!" one of them called out. "What the hell are you doing?"
Noah turned, panic flickering in his eyes. "I—I don't know! I can't stop it!"
The soldiers exchanged a glance before raising their weapons. "Stand down, or we'll—"
Before they could finish, the flames exploded outward, creating a shockwave that knocked them to the ground. Alarms blared throughout the facility as the training room's automated systems activated. Sprinklers doused the area with water, but the black flames remained untouched.
"Noah!"
He turned to see Julia rushing into the room, her face a mix of fear and determination. She reached out to him but hesitated as the flames flared unpredictably.
"You have to calm down!" she shouted. "You're losing control!"
"I don't know how!" Noah cried, his voice cracking.
Julia took a step closer, her eyes locking onto his. "Focus on me. Forget everything else—just focus."
Noah struggled to steady his breathing. Slowly, the flames began to recede, shrinking until they finally disappeared. He collapsed to his knees, gasping for air as Julia knelt beside him.
"Are you okay?" she asked, placing a hand on his shoulder.
"I… I think so," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "What just happened?"
Before Julia could respond, the door burst open, and Marcus stormed in, flanked by armed guards.
"What the hell is going on here?" Marcus demanded, his gaze snapping to Noah.
"It was an accident," Julia said quickly. "He didn't mean to—"
"Save it," Marcus interrupted, his tone icy. "Noah, you're coming with me. Now."
Noah glanced at Julia, who gave him a reassuring nod, then stood up and followed Marcus out of the room.
Marcus led him back to the dimly lit room where Evelyn was waiting. This time, her expression was more serious than before.
"Explain," she said simply.
Noah recounted what had happened, describing the flames and the uncontrollable surge of power. Evelyn listened intently, jotting down notes as he spoke.
"This confirms my theory," she said after a long pause.
"What theory?" Noah asked.
"You're not just a descendant of Lucifer in name," Evelyn said, her voice calm but grave. "Your powers are tied to something far older and far more dangerous than we anticipated."
Marcus frowned. "How dangerous?"
Evelyn turned to him, her eyes sharp. "If Noah doesn't learn to control these abilities, he could become a threat to everyone in this base—and beyond."
Noah's stomach churned. "What are you saying?"
Evelyn's gaze softened slightly. "I'm saying you need training, Noah. Real training. And we don't have much time."
As Noah left the room, the weight of her words pressed down on him. He didn't choose this path, but now he had no choice but to walk it.
Somewhere deep inside, the voice spoke again, a whisper that sent chills down his spine.
"The truth lies ahead. But are you ready to face it?"
