Book 8 Chapter Twenty-Nine; the Night Terror Queen
The group pressed forward, their skills carving through the dwindling tide of apparitions. The river's black waters grew eerily still, the oppressive silence broken only by the faint crackle of energy from their weapons and spells. As they approached the source of the glow, the air grew heavier, thick with the weight of dread.
There, atop a jagged outcrop of rock, stood the Night Terror Queen.
She exuded an aura of regal menace, her sleek obsidian armour glinting faintly in the dim light. Her helm, shaped like a twisted crown with elongated, bat-like ears, left only her glowing, predatory eyes visible a piercing gaze that seemed to bore into their very souls. A billowing black cloak flowed behind her, adding to her ominous grandeur. In her hand, she wielded a curved, silver-edged blade, its craftsmanship intricate and darkly elegant. Chains and arcane symbols etched into her armour pulsed faintly, signifying her dominion over nightmares and terror.
Flanking her were the Nightmare Guards, towering figures clad in corrupted, jagged armour that seemed alive with ember-like cracks glowing faintly against their dark, charred plating. Their helms resembled cage-like crowns, each adorned with a halo of unholy light that cast an eerie glow around them. Armed with massive, rune-etched great swords, the guards stood as immovable sentinels, their stoic posture radiating unmatched lethality. Together, they embodied the terror of eternal night, their very presence suffocating.
The Night Terror Queen's voice echoed across the river, cold and commanding. "You dare defy me? You are but insects before my power."
Jazmel stepped forward, his katana Yoru no Tsubasa glowing faintly as he met her gaze. "We're not afraid of you," he said, his voice steady. "And we're not stopping until you're nothing but a memory."
The queen laughed, a sound that sent shivers down their spines. "Then come, little insects. Let us see if you can withstand the true darkness."
The Nightmare Guards stepped forward, their great swords igniting with a malevolent glow. The group braced themselves, their skills at the ready.
Jazmel was the first to act.
Great Rumbling Dragon!
He slammed his katana into the ground, summoning a massive shadowy dragon that surged forward, its roar shaking the earth. The dragon collided with one of the Nightmare Guards, its shadowy form tearing through the guard's armour and sending it staggering back.
Charme charged forward, her fists crackling with dark energy.
Tyrannical Wrath!
She unleashed a flurry of devastating blows, her movements fluid and precise. One of the guards raised its great sword to block, but the force of her attack sent it skidding back, its armour cracking under the pressure.
Baek stepped in, his Jian glowing with a soft, golden light.
Baek Impact!
He swung the blade in a wide arc, a shockwave of energy erupting from the impact. The force disintegrated several apparitions that had begun to reform and forced the remaining guards to brace themselves.
Sadé moved with deadly grace, her short sword and sabre flashing in the dim light. She raised her sabre, her voice sharp and commanding.
Promethean Fire!
A torrent of blue flames erupted from the blade, engulfing one of the guards and reducing its armour to molten slag. Kazumi lunged into the aftermath, his fiery claws tearing through the weakened guard and finishing it off.
Tera Nema stood slightly back, her wand in one hand and a dagger in the other. She flicked her wand deftly, her voice calm but firm.
Mage's Edge!
A blade of pure mana formed at the tip of her wand, slicing through the air, and striking one of the guards with pinpoint precision. The guard's armour shattered, and it collapsed into a heap of charred metal. With a swift motion, she threw her dagger, the blade embedding itself in the eye slit of another guard's helm.
The Night Terror Queen watched impassively, her glowing eyes narrowing as her guards fell. "Impressive," she said, her voice dripping with mockery. "But you are still nothing before me."
She raised her blade, the arcane symbols on her armour flaring to life. The air grew colder, the darkness around them deepening. The group braced themselves, their skills at the ready as the queen prepared to strike.
The Night Terror Queen's glowing eyes narrowed as her guards fell, her expression shifting from mockery to cold fury. She raised her free hand, the arcane symbols on her armour flaring brighter as the air around her seemed to distort.
Song of the Sullen!
Her voice echoed like a mournful dirge, and the river's black waters erupted with a fresh tide of apparitions. They surged forth in numbers greater than before, their hollow eyes burning with malevolent light. The wails of the dead filled the air, a cacophony of despair that clawed at the group's resolve.
Jazmel tightened his grip on Yoru no Tsubasa, his katana glowing faintly as he assessed the new threat. "She's not holding back," he muttered. "We need to end this fast."
Charme cracked her knuckles, her fists crackling with dark energy. "More targets, more fun," she said with a fierce grin. "Let's see how many we can take down before she runs out of tricks."
Baek raised his Jian, the blade glowing with a soft, golden light. "Stay close," he barked. "Don't let them overwhelm us!"
Sadé twirled her sabre and short sword, the blades gleaming in the dim light. "Kazumi, with me!" she called, and the fire foxhound darted to her side, his molten claws leaving trails of embers in his wake.
Tera Nema adjusted her grip on her wand and dagger, her calm focus unwavering. "I'll cover you," she said. "Focus on pushing forward."
The group moved as one, their skills lighting up the darkened battlefield as they fought against the relentless tide.

Jazmel stepped forward, his katana humming with dark energy.
Flaming Evisceration!
He swung Yoru no Tsubasa in a wide arc, releasing a wave of shadowy flames that engulfed a cluster of apparitions. The flames burned through their forms, reducing them to ash and scattering the mist in their wake.
Charme charged into the fray, her fists a blur of motion.
Dark Tyrant Path!
She unleashed a series of devastating strikes, each blow shattering an apparition's form with brutal efficiency. Her movements were fluid and precise, a whirlwind of destruction that left nothing standing in her path.
Baek swung his Jian, the blade glowing brighter with each strike.
Divine bird!
A shimmering wave of energy erupted from the weapon, disintegrating the nearest apparitions, and forcing others to recoil momentarily. "Keep pushing!" he shouted, his voice cutting through the chaos.
Sadé and Kazumi moved as one, their fiery and electric attacks lighting up the battlefield. Sadé raised her sabre, her voice sharp and commanding.
Storm Crown!
A ring of lightning appeared around her brow and with a pulse, a thrum of power erupted around her, striking the nearby apparitions, and reducing them to ash. Kazumi lunged into the aftermath, her fiery claws tearing through the remaining shadows.
Tera Nema stood slightly back, her wand glowing with arcane energy. She raised it, her voice calm but firm.
Arcanum!
A concentrated blast of pure mana erupted from the tip of her wand, tearing through the air like a comet. The beam struck a cluster of apparitions, obliterating them instantly and carving a path through the tide. The force of the blast sent shockwaves through the battlefield, momentarily halting the advance of the remaining shadows.
Despite their efforts, the apparitions continued to come, their numbers seemingly endless. The Night Terror Queen watched from her perch; her glowing eyes filled with cold amusement. "You cannot win," she said, her voice echoing across the battlefield. "The night is eternal, and so is my power."
Jazmel's eyes narrowed as he glanced at the queen. "We'll see about that," he muttered. He turned to the group, his voice steady but urgent. "We need to take her down. Focus everything on the queen!"
The group nodded, their resolve hardening as they prepared for the final push. The Night Terror Queen raised her blade, the arcane symbols on her armour flaring to life once more. The air grew colder, the darkness around them deepening as the true battle began.
The battlefield was a maelstrom of chaos. The Night Terror Queen stood atop her jagged outcrop, her obsidian armour gleaming faintly as she raised her hand. Pure mana, dark and crackling with hatred, gathered in her palm. With a flick of her wrist, she hurled it toward the group, the energy exploding like a storm of spite.
Jazmel and Baek were locked in a fierce duel with one of the Nightmare Guards, their blades clashing in a flurry of sparks. The guard's massive great sword swung with brutal force, but Jazmel's katana moved like a shadow, deflecting each strike with precision. Baek's Jian danced alongside, its golden light cutting through the darkness as he pressed the attack.
"This one's stubborn," Jazmel muttered, his eyes locked on the guard's movements. "But it's just a matter of time."
Baek smirked, his blade flashing as he parried a heavy blow. "Time we don't have. That queen's not going to sit back forever."
As if on cue, another blast of pure mana erupted nearby, forcing them to dive aside. The ground where they had stood moments before was now a smouldering crater. Jazmel glanced toward the queen, her glowing eyes filled with malice. "She's not playing fair," he said, his voice tight.
"Since when do they ever?" Baek shot back, raising his Jian to block another strike from the guard.
Meanwhile, Charme, Sadé, and Tera Nema faced off against the second Nightmare Guard. The towering figure loomed over them, its great sword glowing with unholy light. Charme cracked her knuckles, her fists crackling with dark energy. "Alright, ladies," she said with a fierce grin. "Let's take this big guy down."
"Just keep it busy."
The guard swung its great sword in a wide arc, but Charme ducked under the blow, her movements fluid and precise.
Cardinal Charge!
She surged forward, her fist slamming into the guard's armoured chest. The impact sent it staggering back, its armour cracking under the force. "Hit it now!" she shouted.
Sadé didn't hesitate.
Storm Fire!
She slashed with her sabre, a wave of fiery lightning erupting from the blade. The attack struck the guard, its armour sizzling and sparking as the energy coursed through it. Kazumi lunged into the fray, his fiery claws tearing through the weakened plating.
Tera Nema raised her wand, her voice calm but firm.
Arcanum!
A concentrated blast of pure mana erupted from the tip of her wand, striking the guard with pinpoint precision. The force of the blast shattered its remaining armour, and the guard collapsed into a heap of charred metal.
"One down," Charme said, wiping her hands together. "Now, let's help the others."
Jazmel and Baek were still locked in their duel, their blades clashing with the guard's great sword. The guard was relentless, its strikes powerful but predictable. Jazmel saw an opening and took it, his katana slicing through the guard's arm and sending its great sword clattering to the ground. Baek followed up with a swift strike, his Jian piercing through the guard's chest. The towering figure let out a final, guttural roar before collapsing.
As the guard fell, the Night Terror Queen's voice echoed across the battlefield, cold and mocking. "You think this changes anything? You are still nothing before me."
She raised her hand, another blast of pure mana gathering in her palm. The energy crackled with hatred, the air around it distorting as she prepared to unleash it.
Jazmel stepped forward, his katana glowing faintly. "We're not done yet," he said, his voice steady. "Not by a long shot."
The group braced themselves, their resolve unshaken as they prepared to face the Night Terror Queen herself.
Jazmel tightened his grip on Yoru no Tsubasa, his katana glowing faintly as he assessed the remaining Nightmare Guard. The towering figure loomed before him, its great sword crackling with unholy light. The Night Terror Queen watched from her perch; her glowing eyes filled with cold amusement.
"You think you can outmanoeuvre me, little insect?" she taunted, her voice echoing across the battlefield. "The shadows are mine to command."
Jazmel ignored her, his focus narrowing on the guard. With a flick of his wrist, he activated his skill.
Shadowed Wraith!
He disappeared into the shadows, his form blending seamlessly with the darkness. He moved like a phantom, circling the guard as he prepared to strike. But to his shock, the guard's glowing eyes tracked him, its great sword swinging unerringly toward his position.
Jazmel barely dodged, the blade slicing through the air where he had been moments before. The queen's laughter rang out, cold and mocking. "You think you alone know the shadows? How quaint."
The guard pressed the attack, its movements unnervingly precise. Jazmel gritted his teeth, his mind racing. He needed to turn the tide now.
Voided Reave!
The world around him drained of colour, the battlefield shifting into stark shades of white and black. Time seemed to slow, the guard's movements becoming sluggish as the skill took effect. Jazmel, however, moved with unhindered speed, his katana glowing faintly as he closed the distance.
With a powerful cleave, he struck the guard, his blade cutting through its corrupted armour like paper. The force of the blow sent the towering figure staggering, its great sword slipping from its grasp as it collapsed to the ground. The guard let out a final, guttural roar before disintegrating into a cloud of inky mist.
The battlefield fell silent for a moment, the only sound the faint crackle of energy from Jazmel's blade. He stood amidst the fading shadows, his breath steady but his eyes sharp with focus. The Night Terror Queen's laughter had ceased, her glowing eyes narrowing as she regarded him.
"Impressive," she said, her voice dripping with mockery. "But you are still nothing before me."
Jazmel raised his katana, the blade glowing faintly as he met her gaze. "We'll see about that."
DING!
YOU HAVE KILLED A TIER V NIGHTMARE GUARD!
EXP ACCRUED!
…
Jazmel hummed as the exp formed into system energy and thrummed within his body.
