Denizens of the Labyrinth

Book 7 Chapter Twenty-Seven; the Venomous Fields

The Venom Fields fall silent for a moment, a stillness so profound it sends a shiver down Jazmel's spine. Then, from deep within the toxic forest, the groaning of ancient trees fills the air. The sound is dreadful, low, and resonant, as if the forest itself is in pain. Branches snap like brittle bones, and entire trunks topple, crashing to the ground with earth-shaking force.

Jazmel's grip tightens on the hilt of Yoru no Tsubasa. His eyes narrow, scanning the shifting shadows beyond the veil of poisonous mist. The ground trembles beneath his feet, and a creeping sense of dread settles over him like a weight.

Next to him, Siromi stands motionless, his katana drawn and glinting faintly in the sickly green light of the forest. His expression is one of focus and calm, but his knuckles whiten as he adjusts his grip on the hilt. "It's coming," he mutters, his voice low and steady.

DING!

TIER V CORPSE SPIDER HAS APPEARED!

BE CAREFUL!

THIS TOXIC TRAGEDY CAN CREATE CALAMITIES!!

Through the mist, a massive form begins to emerge a hulking arachnid monstrosity the size of a small fortress. The Corpse Spider's grotesque body is mottled with patches of decayed flesh, and its eight legs are tipped with jagged, venom-dripping claws. Each step it takes leaves a shimmering trail of blackened poison in its wake, the ground beneath it corroding and bubbling as if alive. Toxic fumes rise from the soil, filling the air with a suffocating stench.

The Corpse Spider opens its massive mandibles, revealing fangs the size of great swords. From its gaping maw, it spews a cloud of thick, greenish smog that clings to the air like an unholy miasma. The mist snakes through the forest, curling around trees and dissolving foliage into blackened sludge. The creature's eyes eight glinting orbs like malevolent stars fix on the group with an intelligence that seems far too calculating for something so monstrous.

Jazmel shifts his stance, his breathing steady but shallow. He flexes his fingers around the hilt of his blade, channelling mana into the weapon as it begins to hum with power. "Stay sharp," he warns, his voice edged with determination. "This isn't just a beast. It's a predator."

Siromi steps forward slightly, raising his katana into a high guard position. "Predator or not, it bleeds," he says, his tone cold and resolute. "And that's all we need to know."

The spider lumbers closer, its body looming over the twisted forest. The groaning of trees is replaced by the sickening hiss of poison corroding the earth. Jazmel and Siromi stand their ground, their presence steady against the monstrous foe. The air crackles with tension, the moment before the clash stretched unbearably thin. Then, with a deafening screech, the Corpse Spider charges, and the battle begins.

Drawing his katana, blue flames flickered across the blade and swinging it in a sharp slash towards the spider he called his skill forth, bathing the strike with Mana.

Flaming evisceration!

Blue sparks alit in the air and the sword strike scarred the air. It hit one of the front four legs of Corpse Spider and it shrieked, causing it to spew even more smog and poison fumes.

High above the battle, Paldane circles in the toxic sky, his wings cutting through the fumes like blades. With a roar that echoes through the Venom Fields, he raises both hands, a swirling vortex of fire forming between them. The Aeonic Inferno ignites with a dazzling brilliance, the flames tinged with black and deep azure as they pulse with power. Paldane hurls the inferno downward, and it descends like a comet, crashing onto the Corpse Spider with devastating force.

The fire engulfs the monstrous arachnid, washing over its decayed body in a torrent of heat and light. Its silk webbing ignites, burning away the poisonous strands in an instant, while the creature shrieks in pain. The flames spread across its massive legs, melting the venom-coated claws, and reducing the toxic sludge beneath it to ash. Steam rises as the venom burns away, momentarily clearing the air of the suffocating smog.

As the flames subside, Siromi dashes forward, his katana glowing with a pale green aura. He channels his mana, the weapon becoming an extension of his draconic spirit. With a swift movement, he slashes the air in a wide arc, unleashing Weeping Wyvern. From the blade, a spectral wyvern materializes, its translucent form shimmering like moonlight on water. The wyvern's mournful cry reverberates through the forest as it dives toward the Corpse Spider, its claws slashing through the creature's exposed abdomen.

The strike is precise, leaving deep gashes that ooze with sickly black ichor. The Corpse Spider reels, its massive legs flailing as it tries to steady itself. The wyvern loops around, striking again before dissipating into a burst of energy, leaving the creature staggered and vulnerable.

Jazmel watched in wonder, it reminded him so much of his own skill. Jazmel, seeing the chance to strike a defining blow against the Corpse Spider rushes in.

Seizing the moment, Jazmel charges in alongside Siromi. His blade, Yoru no Tsubasa, glows with an ominous dark blue light as he channels his power into it. With a powerful leap, he swings the blade into the sky, unleashing Great Rumbling Dragon. A spectral maw of pale blue Mana and energy opens as a long dragon forms the rest of the body.

The dragon coils around the spider, its maw clamping down on one of the creature's legs and crushing it with a sickening crunch. The ground quakes with each movement of the spectral beast, sending shockwaves that destabilize the massive spider. Its venomous legs falter, and it collapses partially, its remaining limbs struggling to support its weight.

The combined assault of flame, spectral wyvern, and earth-shattering dragon leaves the Corpse Spider weakened and screeching in agony, its once-terrifying presence now reduced to a desperate struggle for survival.

The spider was reeling now, clearly close to death. Just as Jazmel was about to call forth another skill. The skies darkened, quickened by the call of Sadé. She poured energy from her crown into the clouds, and they rumbled with her request.

Stormfall!

Big bright beam arcs of lightning and thunder rained down. Hitting the Corpse Spider more than once and literally burning it through till death. The Corpse Spider's blackened body and burned corpse fell to the side. Shuddering the ground and causing Jazmel to have to steady his feet.

DING!

TIER V CORPSE SPIDER HAS BEEN KILLED!

YOU HAVE KILLED A CREATURE CAPABLE OF TRAGEDY!

YOU WILL EARN A BETTER REWARD!

Jazmel liked that sign already, looking over he saw the others checking the system also. He confirmed the system screen, and his item popped up in front of him.

DING!

YOU HAVE GAINED A DOMAIN TICKET TOKEN! A one-time item, you will be able to enter a gate of your choosing, to a domain of your picking for the first time. This is a one-time entry, after that the gates will go back to random opportunities again!

Jazmel looked stunned at this. He knew immediately that he would be using it for the river of nightmares. Now it was a matter of when and not how. He slipped the token into his ring; he would discuss it with the others later.

Siromi looked at him, nodding at him before turning and heading back towards the gate through which they had entered. There was no conversation, they simply moved towards it. but as Sadé and Charme caught up, Charme flicked something towards him, and he had to catch it with two hands.

DING!

YOU HAVE GAINED THE TIER V CORPSE SPIDER ORB! This poisonous orb is a powerful item. Be careful of its use.

He pulled it into his ring and nodded, thanking her. They soon left, Siromi leading them out of the domain gate, Jazmel was curious about the continued opened gate, in truth it had been a while since he had entered one like this himself. But he refused to ask Siromi about it, not being able to tell what the young man was thinking bothered him.

As they stepped through back into the prefecture Jazmel breathed a sigh of peace. This place was truly beautiful.

The Kuzuryu Prefecture is a breathtaking tapestry of rugged landscapes and unspoiled wilderness, shaped by the restless hands of time. Towering mountain ranges dominate the horizon, their jagged peaks veiled in mist and snow, standing as eternal sentinels of the land. Rushing rivers carve their way through the valleys, their crystal-clear waters reflecting the sky's ever-changing hues. These rivers cascade into thunderous waterfalls, each one a symphony of nature's power and grace. Verdant forests stretch endlessly, their ancient trees standing tall like natural skyscrapers, their canopies alive with the songs of countless birds. Amid the dense woods, wildflowers bloom in bursts of vivid colours, painting the rugged terrain with splashes of life and beauty. The air is crisp and carries the faint, soothing scent of pine, mingled with the earthy aroma of the soil.

In the lower regions, rolling hills and fertile plains spread out like a quilt of green, dotted with quaint villages and rice terraces carved into the land. The Kuzuryu Prefecture exudes a tranquil charm that contrasts with its untamed highlands, offering a sanctuary for both nature and its inhabitants. Streams wind lazily through the meadows, their gentle murmurs blending harmoniously with the rustle of leaves and the distant roar of the mountains. At dawn and dusk, the prefecture is bathed in ethereal light, the sky painting the land in shades of gold, pink, and deep violet. Even in its ruggedness, Kuzuryu holds an undeniable elegance a land where the fierce and the serene coexist in perfect harmony. It is a place of natural wonder, a sanctuary for adventurers, wanderers, and dreamers alike.

As they made their way back to the main house, Jazmel's keen eyes picked up the signatures of other presences. Very strong presences, people who were equal to Baek and Charme. He motioned to Charme and veered his chin at the house. She nodded, noticing what he was pointing out and stepped forward to lead the way. Siromi and his retainers didn't seemed to notice, but he walked beside Sadé and holding hands pulled her close. just in case.
