Chapter 318: They Made Their Move
- SunKissedSinner: Nah, my money's on Empress Bastet. She's wild enough to just squat on him without warning.
- RosePetalRebel: Luna's out, tho, right? She already said no to anal.
That little tangent sparked a sub-thread of its own.
- GlitteringGoblinGirl: Speaking of Luna, wasn't she out of line earlier with that dildo shit? Poor Nyx didn't look like she enjoyed 'that' part.
- PeachyGoddess: Out of line? Nahhh, that's just the Chaos Gremlin doing Chaos Gremlin things.
- MilkMaidMayhem: Yeah, but even for her, that was… too much, no?
Kaiden's smirk faded as he kept petting Nyx's cheek, his mind turning inward.
Luna had gone a bit too far, he agreed with that sentiment of the chatters. The rivalry between her and Nyx had always been both competitive and playful, with Nyx dishing it out as well. It was not one-sided bullying.
But Luna crossed a line today. If the Space Valkyrie hadn't strongly asked him to stay out of it, he absolutely would have pulled Luna aside for a serious talk.
Even now, he wondered if letting it slide would fester. He didn't want to lord over his women like some tyrant, but if things ever got out of hand, he'd "clean house" without hesitation.
For now, though, he decided to trust them to sort it out themselves.
His eyes drifted back to Nyx, who was peacefully snuggled against him. As soon as his eyes landed on her blissful visage, the chaos of the chat seemed a whole world away.
Kaiden's thumb kept brushing along Nyx's cheek as she breathed softly against his chest, her body so serene it was hard to imagine the storm that had raged only minutes ago. For the first time in days, he'd let himself breathe. Truly breathe.
That breath froze when the door slammed open.
Luna and Aria rushed in. Kaiden's eyes narrowed because he expected fireworks, especially from Aria, once she caught sight of him and Nyx still physically joined together. Kaiden expected mayhem after she found out that Nyx went behind her back to be the first girl he impaled through the back door.
And indeed, Aria faltered. Her steps stuttered, her face showing utmost surprise, her lips parting at the sight. For a heartbeat, Kaiden braced to protect Nyx from a truly jealous outburst, from extremely sharp words, and to face maybe even tears.
But none of that came.
Instead, her gaze locked with his. Fear was what he saw. Raw, unfiltered fear.
Worry was too soft a word; it was closer to panic carved into her beautiful features, her eyes glassy, her breath ragged as though she'd run a marathon. Luna mirrored her; her normal storm-born confidence was stripped in its entirety.
Kaiden immediately sat up, sensing it was something serious. He carefully laid Nyx to the side without waking her, after which his gaze sharpened as he looked between his Moon and Storm Valkyries.
"What happened?"
Aria's lips quivered before the words tumbled out. "ChronosX… They… They just posted a video both on the Awakened Media Platform and the internet, and it's already blowing up! It was a full press conference they recorded in private, and the many reporters who were present are now publishing their articles on the internet and newspapers one after the other! He made horrible accusations about us."
Her throat bobbed as her voice cracked. "But mostly their target was you alone, Kaiden… they're trying to turn the entire world against Valhalla's Sinners by setting you up as a cruel, sadistic person."
Luna clenched her fists. "And it's working. Based on the initial reactions I've seen, like comments, news tickers, awakened forums, people are already eating it up."
Kaiden's entire aura changed. The blissful warmth from moments ago bled out of him as if it had never existed, leaving only a deadly stillness in its wake. His features hardened, his eyes becoming impossibly dark. When he finally spoke, it was a growl that carried venom enough to rot steel.
"Maximilian…"
The extreme amounts of hatred in his tone were enough to make Nyx jolt upright. Her eyes darted around the room, confusion clouding her expression, yet beneath it lingered a sharp instinct that screamed at her: 'Something is terribly wrong!'
"What happened?!"
It was Luna who answered. "ChronosX just made their move. It's a serious one."
Nyx froze instantly as her blood ran cold. The silence that followed was oppressive. Slowly, she turned her head toward Luna. "Tell me everything."
But Luna didn't explain. "No need. Check the platform. It's on the front page even for people who don't watch porn."
That was all it took. The four of them withdrew inward, their focus slipping seamlessly into the mental interface. The familiar stream of lights and nodes unfolded around them like a digital ocean, and they navigated to the trending section.
The video was impossible to miss. It sat pinned on the very front page just as Luna said, its numbers climbing faster than their eyes could track…
Ten million views in three minutes.
"What…" Nyx gasped in utmost shock, unable to believe the numbers and the speed with which they climbed.
Kaiden began watching the video. The first thing he saw was a massive podium. Then came the thousands of bright camera flashes. A sea of reporters buzzed with anticipation.
And then he appeared. Maximilian—obese, greasy, and reeking of smugness even through a screen—waddled toward the microphone. His jowls quivered as he lifted the mic with deliberate slowness, letting silence fall over the crowd.
He didn't mince his words.
"Ladies and gentlemen, I will skip the formalities. I, as the highest representative of ChronosX and its subsidiaries, stand before you with a grave truth."
He paused for a single second, achieving the exact dramatic effect he desired.
"The awakened group known as Valhalla's Sinners is not the innocent upstart youngsters they seem to be at first glance. They are frauds, liars, and manipulators. And above all…"
Maximilian grimaced as if he was worried for the lives of all humans before he said:
"They are an active threat to society itself."
