Chapter 618: Despair.
Kali roared like thunder, her energy exploding in black waves, devastating dozens of monsters in seconds. But Frieren didn't back down, her golden eyes glowing with cold fury.
"Shut up!" the mage roared, her voice piercing the battlefield. "You can play with chaos, Kali, but not me! I won't let everyone die because of your obsession!"
The ground shook. The colossal creature raised a massive arm, and the movement alone made the air vibrate like thunder. The impact toppled trees, smashed rocks, and sent waves crashing against the island's shore.
Xyn lunged forward, spitting a torrent of blue fire to counter the blow, but the arm came down anyway. The ground collapsed, opening a massive crater where dozens of lesser demons had once stood.
Rogue appeared, grabbing Xyn by the shoulders and pulling her up before she was crushed. Her face was gray, her eyes tired.
"Frieren is right!" she shouted. "This isn't a fight to win. It's to survive!"
Kali laughed, blood trickling from the corner of her mouth.
"Survival? I don't survive, Rogue. I dominate!"
She raised both arms, and black chains streaked across the sky like titanic serpents, coiling around the colossal creature's legs. The molten screams echoed through the air, and for a moment, the thing faltered.
"Behold!" Kali roared, her eyes blazing. "Even this scum bows before me!"
But Frieren already saw what the others didn't yet.
The earth trembled. The fissures in the sky widened, and from within them, other hulking masses began to emerge. It wasn't one creature. Not two. Not ten. It was dozens.
An army of titans.
Frieren's stomach sank. She raised her hand and unleashed a golden blast that incinerated hundreds of lesser demons, but didn't even tickle the advancing tide.
Vampira landed beside her, her face covered in blood and her eyes burning.
"They won't stop, Frieren. I've killed hundreds, but they... they're multiplying faster than we can take them down."
Frieren gritted her teeth.
"It's not multiplication. It's infinite creation." She looked up at the sky. "Scathach is using the entire island as a sacrificial matrix. Each creature killed feeds the next."
A horrible silence fell over them for a moment. Even the monsters seemed to laugh at this, howling as if amused by the warriors' helplessness.
Then, the titan bound by Kali's chains raised his arm again and, with a single burst of strength, broke the black chains like strands of hair.
Kali's eyes widened.
"What...?"
The monster brought its fist down on her. Frieren reacted at the last moment, raising a golden shield that cracked on impact. The entire ground sank, a flash blinding everything, and for a second it seemed Kali had been crushed.
But she emerged from the dust, coughing blood, her purple eyes burning like flames.
"More..." she whispered, limping. "I want more...!"
"You're crazy!" Rogue screamed, dropping Xyn to the ground and throwing herself at one of the winged monsters swooping down on them. He split it in half with his blade, but fell to his knees, exhausted. "We can't take this!"
Rogue roared, tearing off a demon's head with her bare hands.
"So what do you suggest, Frieren?!"
Frieren closed her eyes for a moment. Inside her, magic boiled like an erupting sea. Instinct screamed that there was only one option. Something she didn't want to admit.
She opened her eyes again.
"We need to break the matrix."
Xyn, panting on the ground, lifted her head.
"The... matrix...?"
"The runes!" Frieren replied. "This entire army is fueled by the runes scattered across this island! As long as they exist, no matter how many they kill... the monsters will never stop!"
Thunder echoed, and another fissure opened in the sky. Another titan began to emerge, screaming with a thousand voices.
Kali, even wounded, began to laugh again.
"Finally... finally, someone worthy of me!"
"Shut up!" Frieren roared, the air around her trembling with golden energy. "If you continue, we'll all die!"
She looked at Xyn, Rogue, and Rogue, ignoring Kali.
"Listen. We need to get to the heart of the runes. It's in the center of the island." I felt it when we broke the restrictions earlier. If I destroy the core, the entire army collapses.
Rogue was breathing heavily, her face covered in blood, but she nodded.
"Then let's clear the way."
Xyn staggered to her feet, but her blue eyes burned with determination.
"I'll burn the front."
Rogue swung her sword, trembling.
"I'll protect the back."
And everyone looked at Kali.
She smiled, maddened, but there was a strange glint in her eyes.
"If it's destruction... then I will."
The group rushed toward the heart of the island, racing through the endless sea of monsters. Every step was a struggle. Every meter, a carnage. Blue flames exploded, silver blades slashed, black chains crushed, and golden lightning bolts tore through.
But the horde didn't end.
And behind them, the titans walked, each step making the island shudder as if it were about to sink into the sea.
Frieren knew: they had little time.
If they didn't reach the core soon, there would be no more island, no more battlefield. Just an open portal for Scathach to unleash her hell upon the entire world.
And for the first time, the Elven Queen felt real fear.
The island's ground was no longer solid. Each step made Frieren feel the ground writhe, as if they were stepping on living flesh. With each crack, a red glow escaped, pulsing with the rhythm of an evil heart.
"We're running inside a body," Xyn gasped, spitting fire at a wave of demons sprouting from the earth. "This entire island is a living being!"
"Not alive," Frieren corrected, her golden eyes flashing. "A corpse animated by runes."
Behind them, the roar of the titans shook the air. Each was more grotesque than the last. One had three torsos joined at the same hip, another was just a colossal head with multiple arms that dragged the ground. The sound of their footsteps crushed the trees, shattered the stone, and split the horizon itself.
Rogue swung his sword, cutting down three demons that tried to leap at his back. He was bleeding from his shoulder, but he didn't stop.
"We're running out of time!"
Frieren extended her hand, and a golden explosion opened for a few seconds. But soon the void was filled with more creatures. The horde was endless.
Rogue advanced like a bloodied shadow, her curved blade glinting with the reflection of Xyn's flames. Each blow tore off heads, wings, and limbs, but even she could feel her muscles burning with exhaustion.
Then, suddenly, a flash.
