Demon Lord's Reincarnation

Chapter 726: The Vanguard of the Gods

The original incarnation showed a vicious smile as he snapped his fingers showing the next scene in his memories.

"This was the battle I was the most excited about. Even though I hate those sh*tty Gods, especially the insane Ancient Ones, there were some good ones among them. The one I liked the most was the Ancient One who governed over war. He was like us a b*stard who loved battle and carnage just like us, and he did not hide it.

Most of you my reincarnations were called the embodiment of victory and sometimes battle, but that guy was war itself. Watch and bear witness to the battle that kick-started the forgotten war."

The scene on the screen changed. It showed an open field and many dead or dying humans, dragons, and gods were on the ground.

...

Erste who was holding his new sword gifted to him by the mother of all dragons herself slashed another New god.

This was the first large-scale attack they made against the Gods. Schlau was a pretty good strategist, but of course, even he found it difficult to command their forces in this kind of battle.

It was the first time any of them had fought a war of this scale, where each field was in a different dimension or reality. Despite their forces increasing greatly over the years, the Gods still had the upper hand.

'Even if I kill all these small fries, nothing will change, I need to strike down the commander of this army.'

While Erste was thinking the sound of battle roared around the entirety of this universe. Erste sensed several Old Gods coming his way, but he was not bothered by them, right now he was focusing on trying to locate the commander.

As he struck down the Old Gods that came his way, Erste received the order to retreat alongside his troops. Ge looked around he saw that only a few of them were left on this battlefield. Erste sighed as he gave a signal for everyone to retreat.

As the troops with him were retreating Erste was left behind in the rear to ensure that they could retreat properly. He stood there blocking the onslaught of Gods. One after another Erste slashed his sword, every time his sword fell another God died.

Erste did not know how much time had passed but his sight could only see blood red. The blood of humans, dragons, and gods had stuck to his very skin there was no longer any part of Erste's body that was not blood red.

'I'm pretty sure I just killed several dozens of them, but it feels like I dealt with hundreds of them. It's like an illusion making a few seem many. Also, for some reason, I'm actually getting tired and my sword feels heavier.'

While he was deep in thought as he continued killing god after god he heard a hearty laugh that made the battlefield tremble.

Erste felt an overwhelming presence from across the battlefield. The other gods who had surrounded him dispersed and standing at the other end of the battlefield was a man wearing no armor holding a round shield and spear.

The man was obviously a god of a higher order, meaning he was either a powerful Old God or an Ancient One. The man pounded his spear onto his shield making a very loud booming sound.

"You have impressed me human who stole the authority of Death. I have watched your battles and seeing that smile on your face, it seems you and I are kindred spirits. This is why I hate to inform you that it was unfortunate but it seems that this battle is my victory.

I even used the same amount of people to match your side, but it seems that your strategist does not understand how a war using multiple dimensions as the battlefield is conducted. Still, even though he was obviously a beginner in this kind of warfare he did better than I expected. Tell him that I Lagren the Ancient One who governs over War appreciate his skills."

"Heh, what an honor for an Ancient One of your caliber to praise him, I will definitely tell Schlau, but... Are you sure that you'll just let me go like that?"

"Yes, I want you guys to grow more, so that the next battle wouldn't be such a bore. For that to happen the humans still need their strongest champion."

"How magnanimous of you."

"Still, it does feel wrong that the first grand battle between our two sides ended in such a lackluster way. Even though I already expected my victory in this battle, I hoped for something more."

"Oh, then what did you want to see?"

"I wanted to see you rally the humans on the brink of defeat, counter-attack, and then reverse the situation. I hoped to see something absurd that went beyond what I could imagine."

"So you wanted to lose this battle."

"HAHAHA!!! In a way, that is true, but more than that I just wanted to see a more hot-blooded situation. I wanted to see the people's determination on the brink of death and try to overcome the obstacles before them. I wanted to hear more of the harmonic music produced by blades hitting one another in the dance called a battle."

"It seems that you and I truly are kindred spirits. So this is the end of our first battle, and the victory goes to you Gods."

"Yes, but I still wanted to end this more spectacularly... Oh, I know how to end our first battle more grandly!"

Largen showed a smile similar to Erste's as he pointed his spear towards Erste.

"I Lagren the Ancient who governs over war, the one who laughs amidst slaughter and death challenge you to a duel."

Erste was stunned for a second before he too showed a vicious smile on his face.

"That's how you want to do this, very well. I Erste accept your challenge!"

Erste got into a fighting stance and so did Largen. The two who were smiling at one another had the same thought running through their minds.

'I'm glad I met you.'
