Chapter 115: Bishop Marx [2]
"Ho, are these the future fledglings of the Mars Kingdom?"
Jinn felt an inexplicable sense of tension coursing through his body as the man standing before them observed them carefully.
His long gray hair touched the ground where he stood, and the same was for his beard. Yet, despite his age, there was a brilliance of light in his eyes that no normal person of his age could have.
The light in his eyes gave Jinn a feeling of being exposed. 'So… this is the power of a Bishop!?'
"Greetings, Bishop Marx." Evelyn, along with the priests, greeted the old man with formal respect. Jinn also followed behind their lead and did the same.
'He is on another level compared to the two of them.' Even the aura unknowingly leaving his body had a calming effect on everyone around him besides Jinn.
The man did not even seem to realize how potent his presence was, or maybe he did realize it and was used to it.
Soon, the workers of the mansions stepped forward and welcomed the Bishop.
"We would like to ask for forgiveness on behalf of our lord. Due to the current situation of the young miss, he is unable to move from her side."
Jarvis bowed deeply, begging for forgiveness, knowing that William's presence was very much needed in such a scenario.
Fortunately, the bishop seemed to be an understanding man.
"Worry not, I was the one who asked him to stay by that girl's side and conscientiously heal her. We don't want anything unexpected to happen while no one is paying attention."
After he was led inside, Bishop Marx looked around the house as if he were checking something.
"This place has seen many misfortunes." The old man let out a long sigh, burdened with some unknown knowledge that others did not possess.
Then he turned and looked at Father Augustus and asked, "Are the preparations done?"
Instead of answering immediately, the man glanced at Jinn. Seeing the boy nod confidently, his eyes widened slightly before he said, "Everything is in place. We can start as soon as possible."
Naturally, their exchange did not escape the eyes of the Bishop. But he did not say anything and acted as if he had not seen anything.
'This boy must be someone special as well.' The bishop had already recognized Evelyn since her family was so famous, and he had also attended the royal ceremony where she was crowned with the title of genius, among others.
"Let's prepare the room. We will be starting soon. From what I can tell, we don't have much time…" The Bishop announced, his voice drifted away as he glanced in the direction of the stairs leading to the upper floors.
…
'Imp, be prepared to use the soul points; I don't want to take any chances with my life.'
Standing in Lady Herbert's room, Jinn silently watched the people from the order lining up different materials for rituals on a table in front of her bed.
Since Tessa was also shifted into this room, William was also present. His face was pale, and he looked like someone who had not eaten or slept in days. Had it not been for the faint flicker of light in his eyes, one might mistake him for a corpse soldier.
The young lady was lying on a makeshift bed. Her once youthful body was now scarred with bruises and dark marks that looked like someone had gripped her very hard.
"Please, shut the drapes." Bishop Marx asked Jarvis, who was also present in the room along with William.
Everyone else in the room was there to help in the exorcism in one way or another.
Shhh!
As the darkness claimed the room, the bishop turned to Jinn and Evelyn and spoke softly, "Before we start, I must ask you two to stand in the farthest corners of the room."
He glanced at the head butler and asked him to leave once preparations were completed.
Swish!
Then he slowly lit a thick candle on the table and whispered. "The demons like this one love to attack the weakest bunch in the area when they are cornered. So despite having the easiest task, you will be equally exposed to danger. I will add some extra points to your mission as well."
Jinn exchanged glances with Evelyn before moving to the far back of the room. Since their powers did not require them to stay a short distance from the target, they were fine either way.
"Isn't it too much for a simple demon?" Glancing at the incense bowl, the candle that glowed with a dark light, and several sigils of the divine hanging all around the room, facing the two sick ladies, Jinn perfectly played his part of the ignorant fool who knew nothing about the world.
"Against demons who can hide themselves within the bodies of a human… no amount of preparations is enough." Evelyn stayed in her spot vigilantly, prepared to act and unleash her power when needed.
"Demons, similarly to humans, have their own power system. Even though they don't have chakra spheres like us, they have cores hidden deep within their bodies, which can grant them innate abilities."
"A demon who has only awakened a single core is known as a lesser demon; they can easily compete with a human with a single awakened chakra sphere. Two cores, and they are called higher demons. A demon with three cores has three awakened abilities, and they are called…"
Demonic Fiends
"From the lineup and how everyone is acting, I think this has to be a Higher Demon, which the church wants to get rid of as soon as possible."
Jinn noted most of the things he was unaware of while Evelyn was being generous.
Information was hard to come by; even if it could benefit humanity, it would still end in the hands of few.
Evelyn wanted to continue speaking, but her thoughts were interrupted when the bishop's soft voice thundered in the room, which now seemed smaller than it actually was.
"I am starting."
Evelyn closed her mouth quickly and focused ahead, but the words still echoed in her mind. 'But, even while dealing with a higher demon, Bishops do not make special appearances.'
Just what was going on…
For the first time Evelyn felt clueless.
Shhnng!!
Raising the burning candle in the air, all four members of the church started chanting some sort of incantation, which Jinn failed to understand.
Woosh!
The air in the room grew heavy; the candles in their hands flickered, but some unknown power refused to let them extinguish.
On the contrary, they only started to glow brightly.
When the words coming out of the mouths of the priests became recognizable, the atmosphere in the room changed once more.
"O Seven True Beings, enthroned beyond the stars above the skies,
Eternal watchers from the cosmic veil, unseen and unbound by mortal chains.
Righteous Seven, whose gaze pierces the abyss, hear this call from your faithful devotees."
The Chilling air in the room suddenly dropped a few degrees.
Skeesshhh!!
"Arghh!!" Lady Herbert, who had been sleeping soundly, suddenly woke up, letting out a sickening howl. The force behind her room shook the whole room. The furniture cracked and the glass windows groaned, but not a single hanging sigil moved.
"Bless us with the power that can help your poor worshipers to exterminate this stain of a demon from the face of the beautiful world you created. Bestow us with power so we can prevail in triumph in your graces once more."
A faint, ethereal glow began to emanate from the sigils hanging on the walls, their golden edges pulsing like veins of a crying baby. It spread slowly, creeping across the room, enveloping the bishop and the priests in a shimmering veil that made their forms seem taller, more spectral, as if shadows clung to their robes, unwilling to let go. Jinn felt it brush against his skin—a cold, prickling warmth that hummed with feeling that should not be felt from the divine.
It was dark, cold, and sickening.
Fortunately this feeling passed by very soon, and Jinn felt normal.
'Was that my imagination? Did it come from the demon? Or was it because of my devil bloodline?'
The Glow covered everyone but the two women in the room. Their forms were now shrouded in darkness.
Lady Hebert continued screaming, which made lord Herbert restless. Just as he was about to step forward, Evelyn's cold shadow crept up on his legs, stopping him in the process.
Startled, he looked back. Seeing Evelyn's cold face, he sighed and nodded in her direction before facing forward.
Evelyn let go of her hold, but she did not take her eyes off the man.
"Arhh—hAHAHA!!!" The Screaming voice coming from lady Herbert's mouth suddenly turned into a demonic howl, and finally she started laughing like a maniac.
"Humans…" Suddenly her eyes snapped open, and 'Lady Herbert' spoke for the first time in a while. "Always so pitiful."
Her eyes no longer looked normal, and her skin seemed to be turning darker with each passing second.
"Jinn!" Father Augustus suddenly exclaimed, locking eyes with 'Lady Herbert.' "It's your turn!"
The black-haired boy, who had been standing in the corner of the room with a calm expression on his face and his hands clasped before him, raised his head to reveal a pair of blue eyes gleaming with hidden amusement.
'You don't need to tell me twice.'
