Chapter 21: Chapter 21: off you go too
Jason intercepted Barbara's voice message and hurried to Area 2 as well. Upon arrival, he spotted Batman attempting to free a trapped police officer.
However, Jason didn't join them. From surveillance footage of the hijacking, he had observed a private armed team heading toward the slums. Determined to intercept them, he decided to pursue the group.
Using the Dane-designed "Spiderman Web Launcher," Jason moved, arriving at his destination just ahead of the private army transporting the armed vehicle.
After a moment of thought, Jason activated a feature of his suit, commanding its nanomaterials to deform. on his arm detached, rapidly assembling into an RPG launcher.
Taking aim at the vehicle, Jason fired. The explosion sent the vehicle flying into the air with a force even greater than a conventional RPG. As the RPG launcher folded back into the suit's arm, Jason propelled himself toward the overturned vehicle using a web launcher from his suit.
He wrenched the car's door open and dragged out one of the battered private soldiers from inside.
"Tell me," Jason demanded coldly, "where is the Scarecrow?"
The soldier glared at him, defiant. "Die, you freak!"
Jason smirked at the insult. "Looks like you don't know my style."
From his waist, he drew a handgun, gleaming like a Sand Eagle. He pressed the barrel against the soldier's jaw.
"I'll ask you again. Where is the Scarecrow?"
He shiver for moment, but he sneered. "Impossible. You won't kill me!"
"Do you think I'm that idiot Batman?" Jason snarled before decisively pulling the trigger. The shot obliterated half of the soldier's foot, eliciting a bloodcurdling scream.
"Ahhh! F-Fuck you!" the soldier cried, writhing in pain.
Jason's expression remained icy as he pressed the gun to the soldier's face once more. "I'll ask you one last time. Where is the Scarecrow?"
he was truly terrified this time, stammered. "All I know is that he's on the top floor of an apartment in the slums. That's all I know, I swear!"
As Jason released him, the private soldier collapsed to the ground, clutching the mangled remains of his foot and howling in pain.
Without hesitation, Jason raised his weapon and ended the man's suffering with a single shot.
After ensuring the he was dead, Jason began searching the bodies. It didn't take long before he found a syringe among the belongings. Examining it closely, he activated the microcomputer embedded in his suit.
"So, this is the Scarecrow's latest creation," Jason muttered. "But how does he plan to spread it across the city? Injecting people one by one seems far too inefficient."
His thoughts were interrupted as he prepared to move. With Cortana's assistance, he still had a lead and wouldn't be wandering blindly.
Meanwhile, Batman arrived at the scene after resolving his earlier task. What he found was grim: bodies of private soldiers scattered everywhere, each marked by precise gunshot wounds.
Frowning, he immediately contacted Barbara.
"Barbara, access the surveillance footage from the area for the last half hour. I need to know who did this."
"Give me a moment..." Barbara, the Oracle, worked quickly, scanning the data. After a short pause, her voice returned, tinged with concern.
"Bad news. I couldn't find anything."
Batman's brow furrowed. "What do you mean by 'couldn't find anything'?"
"I mean," Barbara replied, "either someone erased the footage, or the surveillance probes went offline during that time. There's no video, no evidence."
Batman's expression grew grim. It was clear to him that another force was at play in this unfolding chaos. But who?
His instincts immediately pointed to Dane. Without delay, he pulled up the surveillance feeds from the manor to confirm his suspicions.
Only to discover Dane lounging casually in front of the TV, engrossed in Gotham News. He watched with great interest, completely oblivious to the chaos outside.
Batman, irritated by the sight, turned off the feed abruptly.
"If it's not Dane, then who?" Batman muttered to himself, perplexed.
-------------
At Wayne Manor...
Feeling an uncanny sensation of being watched, Dane acted. He casually drew a man-sized circle on the floor.
A figure suddenly shot out from the circle, suspended in mid-air for a split second, before gravity sent him crashing unceremoniously to the ground.
"Ouch!" the figure exclaimed, scrambling to his feet.
If it wasn't Damian, then who else could it be?
Damian dusted himself off, glaring at Dane. "You let me freefall over Mount Everest for thirty minutes!"
Dane shrugged nonchalantly. "Hopefully, that'll cure your bad attitude."
Damian gritted his teeth. He knew better than to pick a fight—Dane wasn't someone who tolerated insolence, even from him.
Eyeing the boy in front of him, Dane smirked. "Jason told me you came here on your own. What do you want, Damian?"
Damian uncomfortably, avoiding Dane's gaze. "I heard there's some crazy guy pretending to be a bat around here. Thought I'd check it out."
Dane chuckled. "That's all?"
"That's all," Damian snapped defensively.
Dane shook his head, unimpressed. "Then go back. Gotham isn't exactly safe right now, and I'm not interested in babysitting children."
He began to open another portal when Damian blurted out, "Wait!"
Dane paused, looking at him expectantly. "What now?"
"You win," Damian admitted grudgingly. "I'm here to find Batman. He's... he's my father."
Dane raised an eyebrow but said nothing. Faced with Dane's unnerving calm, Damian sighed and added, "Batman's trying to save the city, but I can help him. Don't underestimate me—I might be young, but nobody in the League of Assassins can beat me. Except for my grandfather."
Dane couldn't help but smirk. It was widely known that Damian's combat skills surpassed even those of his mother, Talia al Ghul.
"That's impressive," Dane conceded, "but Gotham's not a playground. Your skills don't guarantee your safety here. So, what are you planning to do? Help?" Dane asked.
Damian nodded eagerly.
After a moment's thought, Dane said, "Fine, you can help. But stay off the streets—Jason is handling things there right now."
Damian frowned, clearly displeased. "So, what do you want me to do?"
"Go find a woman named Barbara Gordon and protect her," Dane instructed.
"Who's she?" Damian asked, his tone laced with irritation at being relegated to a less action-packed role.
"She was once your father's assistant, Batgirl. Now, she's paralyzed but still helps him from behind the scenes. I'm worried someone might target her. Protect her, and you might uncover the mastermind behind this mess."
Hearing Barbara's story, Damian's attitude softened. He couldn't help but respect someone who continued to fight in her own way, despite her limitations.
"Fine," Damian said with a nod. "I'll protect her."
Satisfied, Dane said, "Good. In that case, I'll prepare a suit for you."
He led Damian to the arsenal of the Umbrella facility. Inside a sleek glass display was a smaller, lightweight suit—designed differently from Jason's Arkham Knight armor. This suit resembled a traditional ninja outfit, with a mask styled similarly to Deadpool's, concealing Damian's entire face.
The Assassin must look the part, Dane, smirking at the thought of how ineffective Robin's typical mask would be for actual concealment.
The suit utilized nanotechnology, though it was limited compared to Jason's version. Dane had purposefully omitted the ability to create firearms, unwilling to let a child carry lethal guns. Instead, the suit was equipped with a range of cold weapons befitting a ninja: katanas, cross-darts, shurikens, smoke bombs, and similar tools.
Throwing weapons came with locking mechanisms, ensuring pinpoint accuracy.
The suit also enhanced the wearer's physical abilities, compensating for Damian's still-developing body. Dane wanted to ensure Damian could hold his own against adult opponents without being easily overpowered.
For added safety, Dane integrated a shield system using Kryptonian technology. The energy shield could withstand even missile strikes, making the suit virtually indestructible.
Damian's eyes lit up at the sight of the suit. "I want to try it on now!" he exclaimed.
"As you wish," Dane replied, opening the glass case.
The suit automatically adapted to Damian's body, transforming him into a stealthy ninja. Experimenting with the suit, Damian activated two katana hilts that materialized from his shoulders, equipping the blades on his back.
Impressed by the design, Damian felt ready for his mission. Dane instructed Cortana to locate Barbara's position and opened a portal, pushing Damian through without hesitation.
With Damian off to his task, Dane returned to Wayne Manor. Settling back in front of the television, he look into Jason's Watching actions through this immersive feed, Dane grinned.
" This is what true entertainment looks like!"
