Chapter 55: Absorbing Dark Matter, Waking Up And Exploiting Gratitude.
At S.T.A.R. Labs, the room was tense. Caitlin's hands hovered over the controls as Cisco manipulated the satellite feeds, trying to pinpoint the location of the bomb.
"There!" Cisco exclaimed, zooming in on a dilapidated industrial complex on the outskirts of Central City. The energy readings were off the charts.
Ethan and Barry didn't waste a second. They suited up and sped to the site. The industrial facility crackled with unstable energy, the bomb's core glowing ominously as dark matter and antimatter swirled violently around it.
Barry's face paled as he looked at the volatile device. "This... this is too far gone! We can't stop it!"
Ethan stood still, his silver suit glowing faintly as he studied the bomb. "Panic won't save anyone. Let me think."
Barry paced, his panic growing. "Think faster, Ethan! This thing could go off any second, and if it does, everyone's gone!"
Ethan's sharp mind worked through possibilities, weighing the risks and outcomes. Then, he reached a grim conclusion. He summoned Helios through the EchoBox.
"Helios," Ethan said, his voice steady despite the chaos, "is my durability strong enough to handle this explosion?"
The AI hesitated, its usually calm tone tinged with worry. "Your body's resilience can withstand the energy, but this is uncharted territory. The energies involved are unlike anything recorded. Absorbing it could flood your system with unknown effects. The consequences may be irreversible."
Ethan nodded resolutely. "I'll take that risk."
"What?" Barry looked at Ethan, his voice rising in disbelief. "You can't be serious! There has to be another way!"
"There isn't, Barry," Ethan replied firmly. "This bomb is going to go off. But if I can absorb the energy, I might stop it before it destroys the city—and this world."
Barry clenched his fists. "Then let me help—"
"No," Ethan interrupted. "You have to protect the city. Use your speed to create a forcefield around the area. Contain whatever I can't."
Barry hesitated, then nodded reluctantly. "You'd better not die on me, Ethan."
Ethan smirked faintly. "That's the plan."
Barry sped off, creating a barrier of whirling speed around the industrial facility, his energy stabilizing the volatile environment. Meanwhile, Ethan summoned the EchoBox. Its ethereal glow intensified as he directed it toward the bomb's core.
The EchoBox began to hum, resonating with the bomb's energy. Ethan stepped closer, placing his hands on the bomb. With a surge of power, he initiated the absorption process.
The energy roared into Ethan, his body convulsing under the strain. Dark matter, antimatter, and unknown energies coursed through him, their power threatening to tear him apart. Cracks spread across his silver suit, and a pained groan escaped his lips.
"Come on, Ethan," he muttered through gritted teeth. "You've faced worse."
Helios' voice echoed in his mind. "You must be careful, Ethan. This energy is rewriting the very fabric of your being."
"Noted," Ethan growled, pushing himself harder.
The EchoBox pulsed wildly, absorbing the unprecedented energies. With each second, its form began to change, shifting and evolving. The device gleamed brighter, its intricate patterns realigning into something entirely new.
Barry, still running his barrier, glanced over. "Ethan! Are you—"
"I'm fine!" Ethan shouted, though his body shook violently.
Finally, with a deafening roar, the last of the bomb's energy was pulled into the EchoBox. The facility fell silent, save for the faint hum of the upgraded device. Ethan stood in place, his body smoking and cracks still visible in his armor.
The EchoBox floated in his hand, now transformed into a sleek, glowing artifact resembling the legendary Mother Box.
"Misfortune always comes with fortune," Ethan muttered before collapsing to the ground.
Barry stopped running and rushed to Ethan's side. "Ethan! Are you okay?!"
There was no response. Barry shook him, but Ethan remained unconscious. Barry looked down at the newly upgraded EchoBox, its power radiating faintly.
"I hope this was worth it," Barry said softly, lifting Ethan's limp form. He sped them back to S.T.A.R. Labs, praying that Caitlin and Cisco could help.
Caitlin immediately began stabilizing Ethan while Cisco examined the upgraded EchoBox.
"This thing," Cisco said, his voice filled with awe, "it's on another level now. It's like magic and technology combined but... different. More advanced."
Caitlin glanced at him while working on Ethan. "Let's hope it doesn't come at the cost of his life."
Barry stood nearby, his fists clenched. "He saved us all. We can't let him down."
As they worked, Ethan's breathing steadied, but his body shimmered faintly, as if the energies he absorbed were still settling. The room fell into an uneasy silence, everyone waiting to see if Ethan Harper would wake up.

Ethan opened his eyes slowly, the faint glow of lunar radiation bathing his body in soft light. Helios' voice, calm and clinical, spoke through the lab's speakers.
"Your cellular repair is complete, Ethan. The lunar radiation has accelerated your recovery far beyond normal expectations."
Ethan sat up, flexing his fingers. His body felt... different. Stronger. Faster. He could sense a subtle change coursing through his being, something latent yet powerful.
Barry and the rest of the S.T.A.R. Labs team entered the room, relief evident on their faces.
"You're awake!" Caitlin exclaimed, a smile lighting up her face. "We were starting to worry."
"Dude, you took in, like, all the energy of a particle explosion," Cisco added. "You're basically a walking miracle right now."
Barry stepped forward, his gratitude palpable. "Ethan, we can't thank you enough for what you did. You saved this world. If there's ever anything you need, just say the word. The doors of Earth-101 are always open to you."
Ethan offered a small nod, his face unreadable. "I appreciate it," he replied, though his thoughts were elsewhere.
He knew why he'd done it. While saving this world had been noble, his motivations weren't entirely altruistic. The moment Helios had confirmed his body could withstand the energy, he'd made the decision. Exposure to such immense quantities of dark energy—the very source of metahuman abilities—was an opportunity he couldn't pass up.
Helios' analysis had confirmed his suspicions: his body had changed on a fundamental level. Though no new abilities had manifested yet, he could feel the potential simmering beneath the surface.
Ethan stood, brushing off their concerns. "If you truly want to help, I'd like access to your metahuman technology. Devices created from dark matter exposure intrigue me, and I'd like to study them."
Cisco lit up. "Oh man, you're in for a treat! We've got some awesome stuff in storage—energy siphons, meta-dampeners, even a few of Thawne's old toys."
As they led him to the lab's archives, Ethan kept his expression neutral, though his mind was racing. His psychometry—a gift he rarely spoke of—would allow him to understand these devices at a fundamental level. By simply touching them, he could unravel their design, their purpose, and their weaknesses.
Hours passed as Ethan methodically studied the equipment. With each touch, his understanding deepened. He wasn't just learning how to use these devices—he was learning how to recreate and improve upon them.
Later, Barry joined him, eager to discuss speed force dynamics. Ethan feigned interest in helping Barry increase his speed naturally, all the while using his psychometry to analyze every piece of data Barry provided.
The speed force was unlike anything Ethan had ever encountered—vast, enigmatic, and endlessly complex. Though he understood only a fraction of it, the knowledge now etched into his mind was invaluable.
As the days passed, Ethan prepared to leave Earth-101, carrying with him not just gratitude from its heroes but an arsenal of new insights and potential. He knew the changes within him and the knowledge he had acquired would serve him well in the battles to come.
