Chapter 53: Plot From Zoom, We need to save more people.
Barry Allen, the Flash, stood amidst a pile of glass shards where the Sand Demon once stood, panting heavily. His red suit was covered in scratches and sand, but he grinned as he attached the meta-dampening cuffs to the unconscious former threat.
"That was tougher than I expected," Barry muttered to himself, brushing sand off his gloves. He activated his comm link. "Cisco, Sand Demon's down. I've got him secured."
"Great work, Barry," Cisco replied. "But there's no time to rest. We've got another meta attack. A female metahuman in downtown Central City is wreaking havoc. Reports say she's got some kind of forcefield power. Looks bad."
Barry sighed and cracked his neck. "Forcefields, huh? Let's see what she's got." In a blink, he disappeared in a streak of lightning.
When Barry arrived at the scene, he found the area in chaos. Cars were suspended in the air, trapped inside translucent cube-shaped forcefields. People were cowering behind barriers, and in the center of it all stood a woman with an icy demeanor, her hands glowing as she summoned another cube to crush a fleeing vehicle.
"Hey!" Barry shouted, drawing her attention. "Why don't you pick on someone who can actually fight back?"
The woman smirked, lifting her hand. "The famous Flash," she said. "Let's see how fast you are when you're boxed in."
With a flick of her wrist, she sent a cube of compressed air hurtling toward Barry. He dodged to the side, zigzagging toward her at high speed. Barry threw a punch, but before it could connect, she surrounded herself with a forcefield, deflecting the blow.
"Is that all you've got?" she taunted, creating several smaller cubes and launching them at him like missiles.
Barry dodged the projectiles, weaving through the chaos with precision. "You're going to have to do better than that!" he quipped, circling around her at super speed. He created a vortex of air, hoping to disorient her, but she calmly formed a larger forcefield around herself, nullifying the vortex.
"I'm done playing," she said coldly, trapping Barry in a cube forcefield mid-run. He slammed into the walls of the invisible prison, rebounding off them like a caged animal. The cube began to shrink, and Barry realized with growing panic that the air inside was running out.
Barry attempted to phase through the walls, but the condensed air resisted his vibrational frequency. He felt his lungs burning, his strength waning as oxygen became scarce.
"Not so fast now, are you?" the metahuman sneered, tightening the cube further.
Barry's vision began to blur, and he thought this might be the end. Suddenly, the cube shattered with a deafening crack, and fresh air rushed in. Barry collapsed to the ground, gasping for breath.
Standing over him was Ethan Harper, his silver-white suit glowing faintly in the moonlight. His eyes shimmered with residual energy from the impact of his attack.
"You okay, Flash?" Ethan asked, offering a hand.
Barry coughed and nodded, taking the hand and pulling himself up. "Perfect timing, as always. Thanks."
The metahuman glared at Ethan, furious. "You'll regret that," she hissed, forming a massive cube above his head and slamming it down with all her might.
Ethan stood his ground, catching the cube with his bare hands. His superhuman strength allowed him to resist the crushing force, and with a surge of energy, he shattered the cube into countless shards of dissipating air.
"Not bad," Ethan said, stepping closer to her. "But you're out of your league."
The metahuman attempted to create another cube, but Ethan's moon energy beam struck her hands, disrupting her focus. Before she could recover, he closed the distance, delivering a precise strike to her midsection. She crumpled to the ground, unconscious.
"Caitlin," Ethan said through his communicator, "we've got another one for the pipeline."
Barry leaned against a lamppost, still catching his breath. "Remind me to never fight someone who controls air again."
Ethan smirked. "You did fine, but let's save the post-fight analysis for later. There's still work to do."
At STAR Labs, the atmosphere was tense as the team gathered in the central hub, the hum of computers and machinery filling the air. Cisco paced back and forth, gesturing animatedly as he spoke.
"Guys, I've been going through the data from the last few hours," Cisco began, pulling up a screen displaying a heatmap of Central City. Red dots peppered the city, indicating recent metahuman crimes. "The meta crime rate has skyrocketed. The Central City Police have been managing the minor cases with the meta-catching gear we built, but the bigger ones? That's all us."
Caitlin folded her arms, her brow furrowed. "It doesn't feel random. It's almost as if someone's directing these metas, coordinating the attacks."
Ethan, leaning against a console, nodded. "It's obvious who's behind this. Zoom. He's trying to keep us distracted, spreading us thin so we can't focus on him. It's a classic strategy."
Barry sighed, frustration evident in his voice. "We can't just ignore the attacks. People are in danger. We don't have a choice but to save them."
Ethan raised a hand, signaling for patience. "True, but rushing from one crisis to the next isn't going to solve the root problem. We need to stop Zoom. And I think I have an idea."
Barry tilted his head. "I'm listening."
Ethan straightened, his silver-white suit gleaming faintly under the fluorescent lights. "Barry, remember when you were trapped in that forcefield earlier? You couldn't phase out of it."
Barry nodded. "Yeah, it was airtight and dense. I couldn't vibrate through it, and I was running out of air."
"Exactly," Ethan said, a hint of excitement in his tone. "If we can create an ultra-dense forcefield, we might be able to trap Zoom. He wouldn't be able to escape—at least not quickly enough."
Cisco raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "Okay, but how do we even make something like that? Forcefields aren't exactly in my usual tech repertoire."
Ethan smiled knowingly. "In my universe, we've faced aliens with advanced forcefield technology. I've studied it extensively, and I can replicate something similar. We'll need to adapt it for this world's tech, but it's doable."
Cisco grinned, the spark of invention lighting up his eyes. "Alright, let's make some magic happen. I'm in."
Ethan and Cisco moved to one of the workstations, the atmosphere lightening as they dove into their task. Caitlin, though skeptical, watched from the side, ready to assist if needed.
"Alright, first things first," Ethan said, pulling up schematics on a nearby screen. "We'll need to generate a stable energy matrix that can compress air molecules into an ultra-dense state. Think of it like weaving a web of energy around a specific area."
Cisco cracked his knuckles. "Energy web. Got it. I'll start on the containment field generator. You handle the energy lattice algorithm."
As they worked, the two traded corny jokes, easing the tension in the room.
"Hey, Ethan," Cisco said, soldering a circuit. "Why did the photon refuse to check its luggage?"
Ethan smirked, not looking up from his calculations. "Let me guess—because it was traveling light?"
Cisco laughed. "You've got the dad-joke game down. Respect."
"Just wait until I pull out my moon-related puns," Ethan quipped, tweaking the energy readings on the console.
Caitlin rolled her eyes but couldn't help smiling. "Focus, guys."
"Don't worry, Caitlin," Ethan said, his tone light. "We've got this. Once we finish, Zoom won't know what hit him."
After hours of tinkering, sparks flying, and several cups of coffee, Cisco stepped back, holding up a small device glowing faintly blue. "Behold! The forcefield generator Mark I. Patent pending."
Ethan inspected it, nodding in approval. "It's crude, but it'll work. We'll need to test it in the field, but I'm confident this can hold Zoom long enough for us to stop him."
Barry approached, his expression a mix of hope and determination. "Let's do it. If this works, we can finally end Zoom's reign of terror."
Caitlin stepped forward, placing a hand on Barry's shoulder. "Be careful, Barry. This is still a long shot."
Barry nodded. "When has anything we've done ever been easy?"
The team shared a brief moment of solidarity before Ethan broke the silence. "Alright, let's gear up. We've got a speedster to catch."
