Chapter 96: Scouting [1]
After ensuring everything had been properly set up and our camp was organized for basic survival necessities, with sleeping areas appropriately divided between male and female sections, I gathered the entire team. It was time to get to work and begin the real mission to securing the win for this competition.
Looking at our assembled group, I noted that our scouting team was by far the largest, consisting of sixteen people. The scouting team had to be the biggest solely because the area we needed to cover was vast, and these teams would need to split into different directions to ensure the largest possible area was monitored effectively.
Once the scouting team had gathered around me, I addressed all the team captains directly. Clear communication and proper organization would be crucial for our success over the next two days.
"I'm splitting the scouting teams into four separate units," I announced, looking each captain in the eye. "Each unit will consist of three students and one captain. This structure is designed to ensure we remain organized and prevent any disputes or conflicts during your scouting missions, which could prove both dangerous and potentially lethal."
The captains nodded their understanding, already mentally organizing their respective team members.
"Your primary objective is to scout for ruins and shrine locations," I continued, my voice carrying the authority that had been granted to me as the leader. "Whenever you discover a ruin or shrine, you must immediately contact me through your communication crystals. Do not attempt to enter or investigate these locations on your own, we need to coordinate our approach to maximize our Crest Mark collection efficiency."
The teams acknowledged their orders with serious expressions. Everyone understood that communication would be vital to avoid duplication of effort or missing valuable opportunities.
"Additionally," I added, my tone becoming more serious, "if you encounter teams from other classes during your reconnaissance, you are not to engage them. This early in the examination, direct confrontation with rival teams is nothing more than a waste of valuable time and energy. We won't gain any Crest Marks from fighting them, and the risk of injury or revealing our strategies isn't worth any potential tactical advantage."
I could see some of the more aggressive team members wanting to object, but they held their tongues in deference to the chain of command we had established.
"Your job is information gathering, not combat. Stay hidden, observe, and report back. If you're discovered, disengage and relocate immediately. We want to maintain the element of surprise for as long as possible."
After the scouting teams departed in their designated directions, spreading out like a web across the western territories, I turned my attention to Emmet, who had been waiting patiently for his specific orders.
"Emmet, you're the captain of the Hunter team," I said, meeting his eager gaze. "Today you'll have the opportunity to leave camp and search for white donkeys along the river lines. This location is strategically ideal for such creatures - they'll need water regularly, and this is the best natural drinking spot in the immediate area. Make sure you're not detected by anyone while conducting your hunt."
Emmet's response was blunt and confident. "Hmph, so what if we are caught? I'll just beat them up."
I shook my head firmly, recognizing the need to correct this dangerous mindset before it could lead to problems. "That's exactly the wrong approach, Emmet. If other teams catch sight of you hunting in this area, they'll have a general idea of where our base camp is located. Eventually, they'll be able to track us back to this position, and that won't be good for our overall strategy."
I could see him processing this information, his mind beginning to understand the broader implications beyond simple direct confrontation.
"Think about it strategically," I continued. "If they know we're operating in this region, they can set up ambushes, monitor our movements, or even attempt to raid our camp while our teams are scattered across the territory. The advantage we gained by coming to this western area will be completely negated if we reveal our presence too early."
Emmet's expression grew more thoughtful as he considered the ramifications. "So you want us to be completely stealthy during the hunt?"
"Exactly. Move quietly, stay concealed, and if you encounter any other teams, avoid them entirely. Your primary mission is to locate and eliminate white donkeys, extract their Crest Marks, and return to camp without compromising our position. Speed and stealth are more valuable than direct confrontation at this stage."
I gestured toward the river area where his team would be operating. "The terrain gives you plenty of natural cover - use the vegetation along the banks, the rocky outcroppings, and the sound of flowing water to mask your approach. White donkeys are likely to be cautious creatures, so you'll need to be patient and methodical in your hunting approach."
"How many do you think we might find?" Emmet asked, his earlier bravado replaced by practical curiosity.
"Unknown," I admitted honestly. "But given that the Commander directed us toward this area, I'm confident there are valuable targets here. The key is to be thorough without being reckless. Take your time, do the job properly, and prioritize the safety of your team members over speed of execution."
Emmet nodded with newfound understanding of his responsibilities. "Understood. We'll bring back every Crest Mark we can find without compromising the camp's security."
"Good. Take your team and begin your sweep of the river area. Stay in communication range and report back regularly with status updates."
As Emmet gathered his Hunter team and prepared to depart, I was confident that our approach was already giving us significant advantages over the other classes who had likely rushed forward without proper planning or coordination.
After Emmet and his team departed, I turned towards Marcus Ironhold, the captain of the survivalists team. Elen also stood beside him as she was part of his team.
"Marcus, you will stay in the base for now. Just in case our position is jeopardised, you are one of the strongest fighters in the class and having you here would be crucial."
Marcus nodded his head.
