Chapter 61: Attempting the record

Once the class ended, I approached Instructor Sylvia who had asked me to wait after the lesson had ended.

With a serious expression she began. "Adrian, I need to inform you of a development regarding your record."

"Is it regarding my record being broken?" I said, having heard the news from the students in the corridors.

"Yes, it seems like the news has already reached you. Another student from the first Elite class broke your attack record yesterday. His score was 9,701 points."

I nodded calmly. "I see. So the monthly payments are suspended until I reclaim the record?"

"Exactly. You'll no longer receive the 10,000 monthly bonus until you can break the current record and hold the top position again." She paused, studying my reaction. "However, you did already receive the initial 50,000 point reward for breaking the record in the first place, so that remains yours even if the record was broken after."

"Understood. When will I have the opportunity to attempt breaking the new record?"

Sylvia considered the question for a moment before saying. "Well, technically you are able to do so now. You are allowed to attempt breaking the record that somebody else has placed, Twice a week."

Hearing this news, I smirked inwardly. This rule wasn't mentioned in the original novel, and while I was working within the academy system's boundaries, I needed to take advantage of this opportunity while it existed.

In the original timeline, Kyle had held the record unchallenged for extended periods. He would continuously improve and break his own scores weekly, but he never received the bonus for breaking records. The academy had implemented a rule where bonuses were only awarded for surpassing other students' achievements, preventing people from farming points by repeatedly breaking their own records.

What I was planning was essentially the same concept in reverse. I intended to use Kyle's competitive nature and strength to generate bonus points for myself and in turn for himself. He was the only student who could realistically compete with me, and I would leverage his pride and capabilities to repeatedly claim record-breaking bonuses. I knew this loophole would likely be patched quickly once the academy recognized the exploitation, but the accumulated bonuses would be worth significantly more than the monthly payments for holding the record.

Furthermore, Kyle wasn't stupid, I was sure that he would understand what I was doing and do the same.

I looked Sylvia directly in the eyes. "I want to attempt breaking the record now."

Sylvia's expression shifted to shock. "Now? I strongly suggest you reconsider. The current record is nearly five hundred points above your previous score, and you only have two attempts remaining this week. You could wait and try later when you've had more time to prepare."

I shook my head firmly. "It's fine. I'll try now."

She studied my face with a penetrating expression, clearly trying to understand my confidence in the face of such a significant gap. After several moments, she nodded slowly.

"Very well. If you're certain about this decision, I'll arrange for the testing area."

She led me toward the training dummy section. Other students who had lingered after class began to notice our movement toward the testing equipment.

"What's happening?" I heard someone whisper.

"I heard a little from their conversation, is Adrian actually going to try breaking the new record already? It's impossible to improve by 500 points in a single night at his level." another voice asked with obvious disbelief.

Word was spreading quickly among the remaining students. Several began following us at a respectful distance, curious to witness whether I could bridge such a substantial point gap so soon after losing my previous position.

Sylvia activated the measurement systems and stepped back, giving me space to prepare.

"Remember, this is an official attempt. The results will be recorded regardless of the outcome," she warned.

I nodded and began my preparation. I knew I would be able to break the record, I hadn't even used my full power during my previous attempt. I had considerably more in reserve.

Taking a deep breath, I selected a sword from the training racks. Then I activated my Blood Control skill, this time accelerating my circulation significantly faster than before to gain substantially more strength and speed.

Sylvia and the other students watched intently. Among the onlookers were Marcus Ironhold and Emmet Cole, both studying my technique with interest. I wasn't sure why they remained behind, but it seemed like they had probably heard about my attempt too.

Sylvia crossed her arms and observed with a silent gaze, clearly analysing every aspect of my preparation.

The target number was clear in my head. Having attacked this dummy before, I understood exactly how physical force translated into the scoring system.

Then I burst forward with explosive speed that exceeded my previous demonstration.

Whoosh!

***

I watched this enigmatic student of mine launch into his attack. His speed was substantially higher than his previous demonstration, which surprised me considerably.

To say I didn't think he was being overconfident would be dishonest, I had assumed his rumoured poor judgment was finally surfacing. But observing his preparation and execution, it seemed my concerns were misplaced.

His strike connected with the training dummy with power that elite freshmen would have in their second or third semester. Yet, here was Adrian Blackwood, doing so on the second day.

I could immediately sense that this attack possibly possessed the force necessary to shatter the current record. The impact sent vibrations through the dummy, and the magical measurement systems flickered as they calculated the force behind his attack.

I glanced at my other students as they watched in stunned silence. Even Marcus Ironhold, with his family's known defensive power from the Earth Bear bloodline, would not be able to withstand an assault of this magnitude. The boy's potential was becoming impossible to ignore.

Adrian Blackwood had transformed from a mediocre student with questionable priorities into someone displaying Elite-rank mastery that rivalled second year students. His footwork demonstration earlier had shown solid technique, but this raw power output shouldn't exist in someone his age.

There was two monsters in this year group and that worried me. What would the future hold for these two.
