Daily life in a Slime Dungeon

Chapter 5: Slimevolution

Taki stared at the small fire, which was beginning to die out. It had been a relatively long time since the Slimes bolted out of the room, and the fuel for the fire was close to running out. He poked and prodded at the fire with the sharpened stick, and stared at it's burning tip.

He took notice that the wood from the blue trees burnt easily and quickly, and the fire sometimes crackled blue sparks, accompanied by small flame puffs. Taki recalled that there were no blue pigments in nature, at least not in his world, so thinking about the Azure Deathlands slowly became more and more interesting to him.

There were many questions about all the strange things he had encountered, but he hadn't come any closer to questions.

He looked at the hole in the ceiling. The sunlight was gone, the cave growing colder and darker. Not darker for Taki, but still, darker.

His ears picked up on the sound of something dragging across stone. Something rough. He threw the last of the leaves and branches he had collected at the bonfire, which caused the fire to quickly roar, a small explosion of blue sparks that reached the ceiling of the cave. He coughed, and stared at the entrance.

The Big Slime came in, with a bunch of Bonnys and other animals inside it. One by one, Slimes with small animals inside them slid into the room, the bodies looking perfectly preserved but life-less. The last slime entered while using its tentacle appendages to drag a large piece of wood inside the room, leaving it near Taki.

All the Slimes spewed out the animals in the floor. Most of the animals were dead, and those that were alive and tried to escape, were quickly bashed by the Slime's tentacles. The sound of crunches, snaps and whines filled the room for a brief moment.

The Big Slime collected all the animals in a pile, and prodded at Taki. "Po Yo Po."

Taki nodded at the Slime. He smashed the log with his tail, and fed the fire with some pieces. He took back some of the branches from the bonfire, spiked the corpses with them, and left them above the bonfire.

He took one of the Bonny's, and holding his tail as a knife, tried to de-skin it. It was a much more difficult process than he thought it would be, several times cutting into the meat itself or some vein that exploded in blood. He pierced the bladder of the Bonny in accident, letting out a smelly yellow liquid onto the ground. He grunted, and continued his attempt.

The Slimes all observed Taki intently. The Big Slime would walk in circles around Taki, interested in what he was doing. All other Slimes just drooled at the smell of the roasted meat.

As Taki sighed and gave up, he pierced the remainders of the body and put it to cook at the campfire.

The Slimes and Taki stared patiently at the bonfire. After a couple of minutes, Taki took out the spikes, removed the corpses, and threw one for each slime, giving two to the Big Slime and the Log Slime.

Taki gathered the remainder of the corpses, and separated one of the charred Bonny's to see if it would be easier to clean after roasting it. He took a look at the pile of hunted animals. Squirrels with gigantic, retractable claws, (Sharpirrels? Squiblades?), Bonnys (Bonnae when in a pack?), and birds that had fur around their necks and heads (Lionirds?). The Slimes had hunted almost 30 small animals in what Taki estimated to be three hours. Taki felt shivers creep up his spine.

He munched on the roasted squirrel-like being, ripping out the fur with his fangs to get to the meat, while he worked at the small Bonny. After another frustrating round, he gave up and slid the butchering attempt at the pile of bodies.

The Slimes had grown bigger. Taki was too focused at the butchering that he didn't notice the Slimes going through a weird ritual. The Big Slime was larger now, almost half as tall as Taki. The other Slimes had grown too, some more than others. The Log Slime was the same size as the Big Slime was before. All of them had small bones floating inside them, which seemed to slowly dissolve.

They grinned and jumped around each other, saying "Po-Yo-Yo-Po!" as they smiled. They all circle around the Big Slime, who had bubbles floating inside him. He looked deep in focus, his eyes closed.

Lights started to come out of one of the rocks inside the Big Slime. The rock gleamed in a blue light, and the lights that came out of it grew brighter and brighter, until they flashed at once, blinding Taki.

After rubbing his eyes, Taki looked at the Big Slime.

It shrunk to it's original size. And it was blue now.

"He-yo tasty thing creator!" The Blue Slime bounced happily.

'I give up.' Taki groaned to himself.
