Chapter 103: Protecting Astin from invasion [1]
The beast attack was stronger than what I imagined.
Somehow, some monsters managed to get inside the walls of the city without us knowing. No buildup, no warnings, no scout telling a group of monsters are coming.
No. They all appeared inside the city out of nowhere. There was tension already but the appearance of monsters suddenly made everything go from relative calm to complete chaos.
It doesn't take us too long to find the first of the monsters that we heard. A golem, made of stone and the size of a 2 story building is rampaging through the streets. It is a husk of rock that moves in two strong legs and swings two massive arms that are destroying the walls of buildings like they are made of cardboard, throwing stone and wood everywhere. It has one big yellow eye in what should be its face.
This town cannot rest.
Several guards come in and start to fight it. Many take formation but normal weapons cannot do much against it. The spears some of us only manage to bounce on its feet and the bows cannot hurt it.
"Don't give up! Protect the people!" Some guards give orders, trying to keep everyone going forward, but the beast throws a single swing and sends half a dozen flying towards stalls and walls.
A mother and her daughter are hiding in a building from the rampaging monster, waiting for a chance to escape.
A couple of mages move but don't notice the mother and her daughter, and get closer to start casting spells at the creator. The spells hit the rock and fail to penetrate.
"How?! That monster is resisting everything we are throwing at it!" one of them yells in disbelief.
The golem turns towards the mages who start to cast as many spells as they could to the beast. The fire and ice spells crash against the creature that is now looking towards.
The woman runs behind the mages, leaving the relative safety of her hiding spot, with her daughter holding her hand, seeing the chance to get away, but as they run the little girl trips to the ground and starts crying.
"Mama!" She yells in desperation.
"Ana!" The mother yells and turns to check on her child.
The golem's eye starts to shine with power, emitting a light.
"What is it doing?" One of the mages asks.
The creature , from its eye, shoots a beam directly towards the mages.
They fail to dodge in time. The mother grabs her child in a futile attempt to save her and holds her tight.
The temperature goes down, there is a slight cold wind when I manage to get between the beam and the mother with her child. The blast hits against my [Magic Shield] with force, but it manages to hold.
[Magic Shield has leveled up!]
I was missing that notification. Levels must start to grow now, slowly, as I level start to use them again. The increase in used MP will be worth the effort.
I stand up straight and look behind me to see that the mother, who is staring at me in disbelief, is safe with her daughter.
"Run! Get out of here!" I tell them.
The woman takes a while to react, but then nods and grabs her daughter in her arms and runs.
"Let the trifecta guide your feet and bring you safety!" Lisa says, who is hiding behind in an alleyway and peeking from the corner of the building.
"You know that is not going to protect you, right?" I say.
Lisa looks at me, continues hugging the wall and then hides herself completely.
Traitor!
The monster swings its arm at me. I block with [Magic Shield] and get pushed by the powerful strength of the attack.
"Shit!" I curse as I can feel the shaking hit from the fist that I just managed to block.
[Lisa prays for your safety to Ellen! Your defenses and resistances have increased!]
At least she is doing that!
Golems are really not the hunk of material they are made of. They are the core that pokes as an eye, so attacking the very obvious weak spot is the key to defeating these beasts of moving masses. Using spells or anything against the rest of the body can be considered a huge waste of time.
I move and start to cast my Bolts of Ice towards it, moving back to keep distance from it and keeping an angle to be able to keep shooting. My ice spells fly directly at the eye of the monster, but it manages to block the majority of the spells with its hand when it realizes what I am doing.
"Shit, I can barely get a good angle." I say.
"Can you make it trip over?" Karina asks.
I nod, and decide to change the focus of my attacks. Instead of casting to the eye, I start to use my [Icebolt] spell on the ground, managing to freeze the ground... And it unfreezes almost immediately.
"Ah!" I say, and another hit lands on my [Magic Shield], this time breaking.
"Another way! Remember that Russell did something to keep the snow out of town!"
I forgot about that detail. The whole town looks like spring while the rest of the plains is a snow field. I cannot use ice to make slippery ground anymore like that!
Change of plans.
I recast [Magic Shield] and move forward. I run towards it, trying to get between its legs.
Careful, I better not get crushed by its weight!
It tries to stomp on me with its legs, making the ground shake like an earthquake, but I manage to squeeze in right in time.
I cast [Vines] as I pass between the legs and the plant ropes leash on the rocky limbs with force.
I keep running, and get behind the monster. I need to continue running while focusing on the vines to make sure they start strong. I can feel them fighting for their life while the golem tries to move and turn, but I need them to hold a bit longer.
My MP is draining fast with how much I am putting into this. But just a few meters longer and...
The golem, trying to reach me, turns around, and the vines hold. It trips, not able to keep balance as its weight shifts, and it falls down to the ground on its back.
Perfect.
"[Ice Spike]!" I yell and cast it 3 times. The third one overcasting.
Three pointy ice stakes fall and pierce with ease the core.
[Stone golem has been mortally wounded!]
It thrashes for a few seconds before it ceases to move and the stone that protects the core starts to fall apart. At the end, only rubble is left, with a few gemstones dropping to the ground and a big yellow stone in the middle.
The inactive core of the Golem.
