Curse of the Transformation

Chapter 15: The Burden of Power

Jacob's body was trembling, but it was not from fear. It was from the sheer weight of what he had just done. The darkness had been crushed, the source destroyed, but in its place, something far more dangerous had taken root within him. His breath was shallow, his pulse erratic, as though the power inside him was fighting to break free once again.

The leader, still cautious, approached him slowly. "Jacob… what's happening to you?"

Jacob's gaze was distant, lost in the aftermath of the battle. He clenched his fists, trying to push back the overwhelming tide of darkness that churned within him. The infection was no longer just a force—it was his essence now. It had become part of his very being.

"I don't know," Jacob replied, his voice strained. "It's like it's alive inside me. I can feel it, tugging at me, wanting me to let go."

Elliot stepped forward, his eyes wide with a mix of awe and fear. "But you're controlling it. You're in control."

"Am I?" Jacob muttered bitterly, his eyes flickering with uncertainty. "How can I be sure?"

The leader studied him for a moment, his expression unreadable. "If you're not in control, we need to act fast. This power inside you could destroy everything we've fought for."

Jacob looked down at his hands, the darkness swirling within his palms, pulsing like a living thing. He felt it—the hunger, the thirst for destruction that had once been an enemy now becoming his own desire. He had fought to contain it, but now that he had embraced it, how long could he resist its pull?

"We can't stay here," Jacob said finally, his voice low. "I need to get away from this place. If I stay, I might lose myself. I can feel it—it's too dangerous."

The leader nodded, a look of grim understanding on his face. "We move, then. We find a way to keep this under control."

---

The group moved quickly, navigating the ruined corridors of the once-mighty facility. The walls were cracked, the floors buckling under the weight of the destruction that had been wrought upon them. The air was thick with the remnants of the darkness that had tried to consume them all, but now it was eerily quiet.

Jacob's mind, however, was far from silent. The infection inside him was not a passive force—it was a living, breathing entity, one that sought to consume everything in its path. And now, with the source destroyed, it had no anchor, no direction. It turned inward, seeking to devour its host.

"Jacob…" Daniel's voice cut through the fog in his mind. "What's happening? Are you okay?"

Jacob turned his head toward him, but the words didn't reach him. He could feel the infection pulling, tugging at the very core of his being. His thoughts were becoming fragmented, slipping away like sand through his fingers. The hunger was there, a constant presence at the edge of his consciousness, whispering in his ear.

*Embrace it, Jacob. Let go. The power is yours to command.*

"No," Jacob whispered to himself, shaking his head violently. "I won't let it win."

---

They reached the exit of the facility, stepping out into the dim twilight of the outside world. The sky was streaked with crimson, the air thick with smoke and the stench of decay. The world had been transformed by the darkness, its surface scarred by the infection's spread. But as they stepped into the open, Jacob felt a strange sense of calm.

For the first time in a long while, the weight of the infection seemed to recede—just a little. But he knew it wasn't gone. It was still there, coiled and waiting.

"We need to get out of here," the leader said, his voice urgent. "Find a place to regroup and figure out what to do next."

But Jacob wasn't listening. His gaze was fixed on the horizon, his mind elsewhere. He could feel the darkness growing inside him again, its pull stronger than ever. It was no longer just a power—it was an addiction.

*You know what you need to do,* it whispered. *You know what you have to become.*

Jacob's fists clenched at his sides, his nails digging into his palms. He could feel the hunger rising again, the bloodlust that threatened to overtake him. He could feel it all—the power, the rage, the darkness.

"I can't do this anymore," Jacob muttered, his voice trembling.

"What do you mean?" Daniel asked, his voice filled with concern.

"I'm not the same anymore," Jacob said, his eyes hollow. "I've become the very thing we fought against. And I don't know how much longer I can keep it under control."

---

The leader stepped forward, placing a firm hand on Jacob's shoulder. "We'll figure this out, Jacob. We'll find a way. You're not alone in this."

But Jacob could feel the lie in those words. No one could understand what he was going through—not really. They couldn't comprehend the burden of holding the darkness inside, the constant battle for control. It was a war that could never be won, a struggle that would only end in destruction.

"No," Jacob said, his voice cold. "I'm alone in this. And sooner or later, I'm going to give in."

The leader hesitated, but then he nodded. "Then we'll fight with you. We'll make sure you don't have to do this alone."

But Jacob wasn't sure if that was enough anymore. The darkness inside him had become a part of him, an extension of his own will. And he wasn't sure he could ever escape it.

---

As the group made their way through the desolate landscape, Jacob felt the shadows closing in again. The infection within him was stirring, restless, and it would not be denied.

The road ahead was uncertain. The world had been irrevocably changed, and so had Jacob. The battle for survival was no longer just about fighting the infection. It was about fighting himself.

And as the group continued on, Jacob couldn't shake the feeling that the worst was yet to come.

> **Jacob is struggling with the darkness inside him, but the fight is far from over. Will he be able to resist the pull of power, or will it consume him completely? The group moves forward, but the path is treacherous, and the future uncertain.**
