Created G.H.O.S.T. System - A Cyberpunk Story

Divergence Sixteen / Deckard

The history of Edgers is an odd one as they seemingly sprang up out of thin air sometime around 2045. However, that is only at first glance. World War 3 had ended by that point and the world was still in turmoil. Private Military Companies or PMCs abounded, and people's trust in any government-based organization was at an all-time low.

Nearly all police in the world had been defunded, save for a precious few communities. Instead, people were taking up arms themselves and creating militias. They would rather depend on their own skill and weapons than the fickleness of a government or corporation they no longer trusted.

In time, they slowly relaxed, and the people in the militias went back to living their own lives at the edge of civilization. From these, a few kept up their vigilance and worked odd jobs to maintain their lifestyle. These people were the initial beginnings of what would someday become the 'Edgers'.

A group of organized mercenaries for hire, that started from those who had fought against being controlled. It was an organization of people who lived on the fringes of society and continually risked their lives.

Unlawfully taken from Royal Road, this story should be reported if seen on Amazon.

They lived on the edge of society, and of the knife.

*** Deckard ***

Deckard was having a hard time dealing with what Trace had told him. The news that his father -someone he had never even met- was still alive, was hard enough to deal with. Oddly enough, the fact that he had never known the man made it a little easier to handle.

It was the knowledge that his mother had been down here, in a coherent state, and that she hadn't come to even visit him. Neither of them had.

Almost everything he had been doing since he first woke had been geared toward either reuniting with his mother or trying to convince her of various things. That had been the hardest part. Convincing her that he was really her son, that she needed to trust a certain personality, only to do it all again when they swapped out the next time he got access.

Things had been strange, and he was sure there were unknown factors at play even now. It was why he had wanted to so desperately gain access to a proper connection to his mother's satellite. What he was doing now just wasn't working.

Now, he learned that both of his parents had been in this FRACKING city for years while he was stuck in a coma in his braincase nearby. It was all too much! Why had he even been trying to reconnect with these people? It didn't seem as though they cared about him.

So, why did he care about reuniting with them?
