“Mum…” Pei Zhen pleaded.

“Oh do keep quiet.” Brushing all image aside, his mother said, “The bottom party has no right to talk to me.” Her breath was heavy with alcohol.

Pei Zhen was speechless. Was that his real mother?!

Hence the family dinner ended in a bit of unexpected mess, with the two fathers helping their wives into their respective cars. Before Pei Zhen had the chance to heave a sigh of relief, Fu Sichen’s father came up to them in a flash.

“Pei Pei, now that you’ve got into Fu Sichen’s bed, we’re family.” Holding Pei Zhen’s hand, Fu Sichen’s father had a solemn expression and said with a sort of elated boldness, “A little red packet, keep this. “Don’t worry.” Fu Sichen encircled an arm around Pei Zhen’s waist and looked at his father with coldness in his eyes. “I will treat Pei Zhen very well. Leave the red packet here. You may go.”

Before Fu Sichen’s father could leave, Pei Zhen’s father immediately rushed over like a bolt of lightning, and he held Fu Sichen’s hand.

“Sichen, my daughter-in-law, this is a little token from me, please take it.” It was another red packet, and he shoved it into Fu Sichen’s hand. Pei Zhen’s father was like a method actor. “I know it’s hard to be the one in the shadow, thank you for giving in to my Pei Pei, the mini top party.”

“Darling, don’t worry. I will cherish and love you all my life, and will not abandon you till death.”

The vow was indeed touching. Surprisingly Fu Sichen didn’t get angry upon hearing that, and only wanted to laugh.

What was initially thought of as a rather formal meeting of the parents turned out to be quite the opposite and ended amazingly. The two fathers, unlike the mothers, thought of their own sons as the top party. Even along the way home with their drunk wives, they wouldn’t stop debating.

Although the ending left them not knowing whether to laugh or to cry, Pei Zhen could finally heave a sigh of relief.

Surprisingly self-aware, he told Fu Sichen quite earnestly after the two old men had left, “Darling, thank you for saving my ego.”

It wasn’t that Pei Zhen was especially particular about it. When he was using the term ‘daughter-in-law’, it was all in jest.
