Chapter 104: It seems like it works
"It seems like it works."
Hector coughed several times before looking at the men ahead, his eyes white and hazy.
Aileen knelt on the ground, his head hanging low, unmoving. His whole body trembled now and then with faint vibrations.
He looked like he was in terrible agony.
Then, the earth dome cracked and finally collapsed. It was logical enough—after all, the commoner who had created it had already passed out.
In an instant, a massive shadowy hand reached out, grabbed Hector, and pulled him out of danger.
Lying in the palm of that giant shadowy hand, he felt a wave of mana flowing into his body, slowly washing away the mana poison that clung deep within his muscles.
As time passed, Hector finally regained full consciousness. He pushed himself up, swallowed three healing capsules with a grimace, and shook off the lingering disgust.
Before long, he was back to his usual healthy state.
His eyes swept over the gigantic shadow monster—though now, in his vision, it was only countless white points of light. Then he nodded, signaling to his comrades that he was fine.
Bam nodded back. But then, the sound of laughter and hurried footsteps echoed from behind.
"Wait for me!"
From above, the wolf-man dropped onto the giant shadow monster's right shoulder. Drool dripped from his bared teeth as he stared at the enemies ahead.
"Well, you already used mana on him?"
Glancing at Aileen, he had assumed Hector had done something to him. It reminded him of the prisoners tormented by Hector's mana in the cells before—a nightmare he never forgot. And yet, to his surprise, he saw no sign of mana being used on Aileen.
Was that a new skill? The thought made him curious… but also uneasy. What if Hector lost control and killed them all?
Hector understood Tyrone's worry, but he only shook his head in silence. His focus stayed locked on the enemy ahead, not shifting anywhere else.
It was the killing technique his instructor had once taught him, and this was the first time he had ever triggered it. To his surprise, he pulled it off without a single mistake. Still, this technique required many conditions to work.
And somehow, at that very moment, every condition lined up.
Timing!
Distance!
The enemy's guard was down!
Everything was perfect!
Of course, he still needed a lot more practice to master it, but for now, it was more than enough.
"What are you doing to my friend?!" Jeff shouted in fury after failing to wake him.
Houle's face was tight with worry.
"The healing capsule doesn't work!"
Aileen would survive—but the shock to his mind was overwhelming. It was even stronger than other killing techniques, worse than burning in hell, worse than exploding into mush.
No capsule could heal mental shock. The treatment was simple in method but slow in time. In Aileen's case, he would need at least a day to recover. Unfortunately, time was not on their side.
Hector didn't bother explaining. Feeding the enemy with fear and negative emotions was more important.
He glanced down at his cane, brimming with lightning mana so intense it numbed his own hand.
"Get ready!"
Both Tyrone and Bam nodded, prepared to respond in an instant.
Flick!
Flick!
Flick!
Flick!
Without hesitation, Hector launched five smoke coins in five different directions. Each one landed precisely around the enemy, spaced at the perfect distance.
Then—
Boom!
Five clouds of smoke erupted, engulfing Jeff's team. In the chaos, Hector and his comrades slipped into the cover of smoke and vanished.
Jeff roared in pure rage.
"FUUUUUCK!"
Not allowing the clouds of smoke to reach them from every direction, the enemy had a chance to attack. He jumped into the air and swung his claws rapidly, sending countless energy slashes through the smoke, hoping to wipe out both enemies and those annoying obstacles.
But then, at some point—
The atmosphere shifted, though they weren't aware enough to notice. Countless streaks of lightning flashed in the air and across the ground.
The heat rose, and moisture lifted from the ground before vanishing into the air.
Houle was the first to notice.
"Jeff! Don't lose your mind. Something's not right here!"
Jeff snapped out of his rage, realizing he had been blindly pouring all his fury into the smoke. He landed lightly.
And in that moment, his sixth sense exploded violently.
A chill sensation crawled over his skin, raising every hair on his body.
No… He had already ignored the warning signs in his anger. Without hesitation, he grabbed his artifact and quickly activated it for his comrades.
He shouted in panic, his voice full of urgency:
"Protect Aileen!"
Though she didn't understand what was happening, Aileen stayed where she was and pulled out her artifact.
Soon, a mana barrier formed around them, looking untouched and indestructible.
Even so, the sensation of death pressed down harder and harder. Jeff clenched his teeth in helplessness, praying they could withstand what was coming.
"My mistake! I underestimated the enemy! From the start, we should've focused on that blind guy!"
He pieced everything together. From the very start, they had fallen into a trap—an intricate, deadly plan.
If only he had realized it sooner. The blind man was the leader, the one who had been pulling the strings all along.
The blind guy had ordered for the wolf man through a strange tool in the wolf man's hand, which he had never seen before. And, the wolf man had played with his emotions and pretended as true actors.
They fooled him.
Exhausted and regretful, he looked around. The area was now filled with massive lightning columns, tearing and destroying everything in sight.
Thunder roared endlessly, shaking the ground, as if a God of Thunder was delivering divine punishment upon its victims.
Time was running out before the barrier shattered under the destructive lightning strikes.
''N-No… this is my fault." She began to cry, clutching Aileen—who had already fainted—blaming herself for her stupidity. She had let her guard down, dismissed them as weak and worthless just because they were commoners. And now, everyone had to pay with their lives.
Jeff forced himself to look at his comrades one last time. They carried the same guilt, the same thoughts. But it was useless now.
The royal arrogance of the empire had doomed them. They had been too proud, too overconfident. In the end, they were the real trash, not the others. Would they even have survived the second challenge with such arrogance? Maybe… dying here was still better than dying in the Equilibria World.
Crack!
Crack!
Crack!
The barrier split apart.
BOOOM!
The entire place was wiped out by Hector's B-Rank Artifact.
