chrono-wars: legacy of past

Chapter 8: The Tesla Renaissance

Elara couldn't shake the thought of Nikola Tesla as she returned to her base in the temporal continuum. The man's brilliance had shaped so much of human progress, yet his life had been riddled with challenges—financial struggles, skepticism from peers, and betrayal by powerful figures. If the Revisionists had their way, his contributions would be erased, and humanity's leap into the technological age would be delayed by decades, if not centuries.

"Chrono," Elara said, leaning back in her chair, "run a projection. What does the timeline look like if Tesla's influence is maximized? What happens if his vision for the future is fully realized?"

"Processing…" Chrono's interface flickered, and a stream of holographic images filled the air.

The Vision of Tesla Unchained

In this alternate timeline, Tesla's alternating current system didn't just win the war of currents; it became the foundation for a decentralized energy network that brought affordable, renewable electricity to every corner of the world. Wireless energy transmission—one of Tesla's most ambitious dreams—became a reality, eliminating the need for cables and reducing resource consumption dramatically.

In the 20th century, Tesla's ideas inspired a new generation of inventors and scientists, accelerating advancements in robotics, radio communication, and renewable energy. By the 1950s, humanity had already begun experimenting with fusion energy, solving the planet's energy crisis decades earlier than recorded history.

By the early 21st century, cities were powered entirely by clean, wireless energy, their skies clear of pollution. The global economy flourished as energy scarcity became a thing of the past. Tesla's influence also extended to transportation, with electric vehicles becoming the norm by the 1930s. Humanity reached Mars in the 1980s, using Tesla-inspired propulsion systems to traverse the void of space.

But the timeline wasn't without its challenges. Tesla's vision of free energy for all was opposed by powerful industrialists and governments, who struggled to maintain control over a world where energy could no longer be monopolized. These conflicts gave rise to a new form of decentralized governance, where communities managed their own resources without interference from larger powers.

Tesla's Legacy in the Original Timeline

Elara's curiosity deepened. While Tesla had undeniably left his mark on history, his potential had been stifled by the same forces that sought to control him in the alternate timeline. She pulled up key moments from his life:

1. The Wardenclyffe Tower (1901–1917): Tesla's ambitious project to transmit wireless energy across the globe had been dismantled due to lack of funding and the opposition of financial backers like J.P. Morgan. If completed, it could have revolutionized communication and energy distribution.

2. The Suppression of Ideas: Tesla's innovative patents in renewable energy and wireless communication had often been ignored or outright suppressed, delaying technological advancements that could have reshaped the 20th century.

3. The Obscurity of His Later Years: Despite his early successes, Tesla had died penniless and alone in 1943, his contributions overshadowed by the rise of other inventors who had built on his foundations.

A Mission of Inspiration

Elara realized that while her job was to protect the timeline, there might be a way to subtly nudge history toward a brighter future—one where Tesla's ideas weren't buried but embraced.

"Chrono," she said, her voice steady, "what are the ethical guidelines on indirect intervention? Say, hypothetically, ensuring someone like Tesla receives just a little more support?"

"Direct intervention that alters key historical outcomes is prohibited. However, actions that inspire or empower individuals to achieve their potential, without direct manipulation of events, fall within acceptable parameters."

Elara grinned. "Good. Let's make sure Tesla has the tools to keep dreaming."

A Visit to Wardenclyffe

Elara set the Time Pod to 1903, the height of Tesla's work on the Wardenclyffe Tower. She materialized near his laboratory in Shoreham, New York, the massive skeletal structure of the tower looming against the evening sky.

Inside, Tesla was hunched over a series of blueprints, his sharp features illuminated by the flicker of an electric arc. His assistant hovered nearby, clearly worried.

"I fear we may not last another month, Mr. Tesla," the assistant said. "Mr. Morgan has withdrawn further funding, and the creditors are growing restless."

Tesla waved him off, his mind clearly elsewhere. "Do not trouble yourself with finances. Focus on the work. The world will understand the importance of this project in time."

Elara couldn't help but admire his determination, even as she saw the weight of his struggles etched into his face.

"Mr. Tesla," she said, stepping forward, "I've heard about your work. It's… extraordinary."

Tesla looked up, startled. "And who might you be, madam?"

"A friend of progress," Elara said cryptically. "I understand you're facing challenges, but I want you to know that your ideas will outlive you. They'll shape a future brighter than you can imagine."

Tesla frowned, studying her with a mix of curiosity and suspicion. "What do you mean by this?"

Elara smiled gently. "Simply that the world isn't ready for you yet—but it will be. Keep building, keep dreaming, and trust that your work will find its place in history."

Before Tesla could press her further, she slipped a small notebook onto his desk. It contained nothing overtly futuristic, just sketches and ideas inspired by his own theories—a subtle push to encourage him to pursue his dreams with renewed vigor.

As Elara returned to her pod, she felt a sense of satisfaction. She hadn't altered the timeline, but she had given Tesla a moment of hope, a reminder that his efforts weren't in vain.

"Chrono, what's the projection now?"

"Minor fluctuations detected. Timeline stability remains intact. However, a slight increase in Tesla's productivity has been noted. Long-term effects: unknown."

Elara leaned back, a small smile playing on her lips. "Sometimes, all a genius needs is a little encouragement."
