Chapter 22: The Trinity Paradox
July 16, 1945 – Jornada del Muerto, New Mexico
Elara stepped out of the Time Pod into the vast desert landscape of Los Alamos. The sky was still dark, but in the distance, the first light of dawn was creeping over the horizon.
This was it.
The Trinity Test—the detonation of the first atomic bomb.
A single event that would change the world forever.
But the Revisionists were here.
And if they altered this moment, it could mean an entirely different future for nuclear power, warfare, and the Cold War.
She adjusted her desert fatigues, blending in with the dozens of scientists, engineers, and military personnel gathered at the test site.
Somewhere among them, the Revisionists were making their move.
"Chrono, status report."
**"Anomaly detected:
1. Possible attempt to alter the explosion's yield.
2. Suspicious activity near the test bunker."**
Elara exhaled.
If the bomb fizzled, the world might not take nuclear power seriously—delaying technological advancements for decades.
If the bomb was made too powerful, history would take an even darker turn.
She had to make sure the test went exactly as it had in the original timeline.
Sabotage in the Control Bunker
Elara made her way toward the control bunker, where the top scientists—including J. Robert Oppenheimer and General Leslie Groves—were making final preparations.
As she approached, she noticed a figure in a military uniform, subtly tampering with the detonator panel.
Revisionist.
Elara slipped inside.
The man was carefully adjusting the timers and voltage controls.
"Chrono, analyze changes."
"Confirmed: Modifications detected. If activated, the explosion will yield 3x its original power."
Elara's stomach turned. That wasn't just a historical deviation—that was a global catastrophe.
She stepped forward. "Hey! What are you doing?"
The man spun, eyes widening in shock.
"You don't belong here," he hissed.
Neither did he.
Before he could react, Elara lunged and grabbed his wrist, twisting it behind his back. He struggled, but she forced him against the control panel.
"Chrono, override panel settings."
"Restoring original detonation parameters…"
The Revisionist growled and elbowed her in the ribs, breaking free. He reached for a small device in his pocket—a remote failsafe.
If he triggered it, the bomb's yield would spike uncontrollably.
Elara kicked it from his hand and drove her fist into his jaw. The Revisionist crumpled.
She picked up the remote and crushed it beneath her boot.
"Chrono, confirm bomb settings."
"Detonation yield restored. Timeline intact."
Elara exhaled. Crisis averted.
The Atomic Dawn
She slipped out of the bunker just as the final countdown began.
"Ten… nine… eight…"
The scientists and soldiers shielded their eyes behind protective gear.
Elara turned away, knowing what was coming.
"…Three… two… one."
A blinding flash ignited the sky.
The ground rumbled as a mushroom cloud rose into the heavens.
The first atomic bomb had just detonated.
History was safe.
But Elara's victory was short-lived.
Because Chrono suddenly beeped with an urgent warning.
"New anomaly detected. Location: Roswell, New Mexico. Year: 1947."
Her eyes widened.
Roswell.
The site of the most famous UFO crash in history.
And the Revisionists were heading straight for it.
