chrono-wars: legacy of past

Chapter 17: The Last Days of an Empire

The hum of the Time Pod filled the air as Elara adjusted her coordinates:

Moscow, December 25, 1991.

The day the Soviet Union fell.

A historic moment of transition—a peaceful end to an empire that had shaped the 20th century.

And a moment the Revisionists wanted to rewrite.

Arrival in Moscow

The chill of a Moscow winter hit Elara as she stepped out onto a quiet street. The Kremlin loomed in the distance, its red walls hiding the tension brewing inside.

It was December 25, 1991—the day Mikhail Gorbachev would officially resign as President of the Soviet Union.

A peaceful transition. No coups, no bloodshed.

But the Revisionists wanted war.

Chrono's Warning

Elara activated her wrist communicator.

"Chrono, report."

**"Two major anomalies detected:

1. A faction of Soviet hardliners, influenced by the Revisionists, is planning an armed coup.

2. A Western intelligence asset is being manipulated to escalate hostilities between the U.S. and Russia."**

Elara frowned. If the Soviet military refused to accept the Union's collapse, civil war could erupt.

And if U.S. forces misinterpreted Soviet movements, the world could be dragged into chaos.

She had two targets. And limited time.

Stopping the Coup

Elara moved quickly through the frozen streets, making her way toward the Ministry of Defense.

Inside, a secret meeting was taking place.

A group of Soviet generals, led by Marshal Sergei Volkov, were discussing their final move—a military coup to stop Gorbachev from resigning.

And standing beside them was a Revisionist agent.

Elara slipped into the shadows, listening.

"This resignation is a disgrace," Volkov growled. "We cannot allow the Soviet Union to be humiliated!"

"We have the troops," another general added. "If we act now, we can take back control."

The Revisionist leaned in. "Gorbachev will address the world tonight. If you strike before then, history will never forget your victory."

Elara had heard enough.

She pulled a small sonic disruptor from her pocket and activated it.

A high-pitched frequency blasted through the room, stunning everyone inside.

Before they could react, she lunged at the Revisionist.

The fight was brutal. The agent was strong, but Elara was faster. Within seconds, she had him pinned.

"Your plan ends here," she whispered.

Volkov and his men, still dazed, reached for their weapons—but Elara pulled out forged KGB orders.

"Stand down," she commanded. "This coup is already compromised."

Volkov hesitated. The document looked real.

Finally, his shoulders slumped. He tore up his plans and ordered his men to disperse.

The coup was over before it began.

But the second anomaly still remained.

Preventing a Global Crisis

Elara rushed toward the U.S. Embassy in Moscow.

Her next target: CIA officer Daniel Lawson—an intelligence asset the Revisionists were manipulating.

Inside the embassy, a secret meeting was underway.

Lawson was listening to a fake intelligence report—crafted by the Revisionists—claiming that Soviet nuclear forces were preparing to launch.

"Sir, we need to alert Washington," an officer said. "If they're mobilizing, we must prepare a response."

Elara stepped in.

"That information is false," she said.

Lawson turned, startled. "Who the hell are you?"

Elara tossed declassified Soviet documents onto the table.

"Gorbachev is resigning peacefully. The Soviet nuclear command structure is intact. This is not a coup, and it is not a war."

Lawson frowned. "And how do you know that?"

"Because I was just at the Ministry of Defense. The generals who wanted war? They've already backed down."

Lawson hesitated. He looked at the Revisionist agent beside him—a man posing as an intelligence analyst.

The agent's face was pale. He knew the mission was failing.

Lawson exhaled. "Stand down all alerts. Do not escalate the situation."

The Revisionist seethed, but it was too late.

The crisis was over.

The Soviet Union Collapses—Without War

That night, Elara stood outside Red Square, watching history unfold.

At 7:32 PM, Mikhail Gorbachev officially resigned.

The Soviet flag was lowered over the Kremlin for the last time.

There were no riots. No civil war. No nuclear standoff.

Just a peaceful transition into the modern era.

Elara turned away, activating her communicator.

"Chrono, status?"

"Timeline remains intact. The Soviet Union dissolves peacefully. The Cold War ends."

She exhaled in relief.

But as she stepped into the shadows, she felt a sense of unease.

This was the second time the Revisionists had tried to rewrite history on a global scale.

They weren't just meddling in the past.

They were searching for something.

Something hidden deep in history.

Something worth rewriting the world for.

Elara knew she had to find out what—before it was too late.

Next Mission Detected:

"Chrono, locate the next anomaly."

A long pause. Then—

"Anomaly detected: July 20, 1969. Apollo 11 Moon Landing."

Elara's eyes widened.

The Revisionists were targeting humanity's first steps on the Moon.

And that meant one thing—

The true war for history was only just beginning.
