Chosen of the Endless One [Kingdom Building]

Side Story: Clandestine Meeting of the Weavers

Five women sat in a small cottage at the outskirts of the village of Bicman. In the fading light of the sun, they worked vigorously to complete the project assigned to them by the chosen. To him, it was a casual comment tossed out as an afterthought after their last success; to them, however, it was a command from the Endless One himself. The chosen possessed the knowledge of God, and if he said it could be done, then it would be done by them.

This had all started when Marsandra had passed on the knowledge she had obtained from Lord Bicman. It was a wooden stick with a small hook at the end. He had shown her how to use it to loop yarn around itself in an interesting way, causing it to hold together. She had made a scarf from wool out of it, but his lordship had told her you could make other things out of it, including hats and stockings.

Marshandra told them she did not have the time to figure it out, so she turned it over to them to uncover all the things that could be made from this new method. Soon, the women of Bicman were knitting out socks fast enough to put them on all the children of Bicman during the winter, and the knowledge quickly spread to the other villages. Since then, many different stitches have been created.

Their lord was so pleased with their work that he generously rewarded them, explaining how their accomplishment would change the world. It would not only keep their families clothed and warm but also enable them to create beautiful decorations for their clothing.

When it spread to the cove, a new method for making fishing nets was discovered. All their satchels were now being made from this new method as well.

Suddenly, one of the youngest women among them squealed. "I did it!" Then, in a softer, more subdued voice, she said, "I…I think I did it."

She handed the small piece of stitching she had been working on. It was uneven in some places, but it was definitely a new and different way of tying the yarn together.

As the women passed it around, she explained. "We had all been thinking it would be done the same way as crochet, just with two needles, but I thought if it was the same thing, why would our lord in his wisdom ask us to figure out how to do it if we already had a method to make things with crochet? I started experimenting with multiple loops, and this is what I came up with."

The oldest of the women smiled gently. "Wonderful job, dear. Show us all how you did it, and we will work together to see if we can improve it. As the Chosen has said before, just because it works doesn't mean you cannot make it better. He was certainly proven right with the crochet."

"What about what he said about making the thread more consistent and stronger?" Another lady said.

"All in good time. As the great lord says, 'You don't eat an elephant in one bite?'"

Unfortunately, none of them knew what an elephant was.
