Chapter 5: Chapter 5: The Killer, Zhao Changhe!
If Yue Hongling had heard the phrase "not leaving a chicken or dog alive," she most certainly would have regreted sending the young man she had just rescued into the tiger's den.
Yue Hongling had too little information; all she knew was that it was an "attack," but as for why and what it aimed to achieve, she was unaware.
Luo Family Manor was, after all, an old and powerful place, reportedly intertwined in countless ways with the Great Xia Royal Family. Besides the Manor Master, there were several other experts within. However, the Blood God Sect wasn't a particularly strong force; even their strongest Sect Hierarch was said to only be at the Mystical Gate Ninth Layer. Although stronger than Luo Family Manor overall, launching a war of extermination would require them to come out in full force.
The Blood God Sect didn't usually operate in this area, as the Manor Master said, "We have no dealings with each other." Logically, it wouldn't make sense for them to cross thousands of miles in full force, an act that would hardly go unnoticed by the Great Xia Imperial. It's more likely they sent a few experts either for an assassination or to steal some weapons or secret books, things common in the Worldly Society.
In such cases, Yue Hongling believed she could lend a hand. Even without her, given that the manor was warned, there shouldn't be any problems, so she went on her way.
She had never imagined that Luo Family Manor would actually be annihilated because of this.
The opponents indeed didn't come out in full force; it was indeed only a few experts, but their quality was terrifying.
Zhao Changhe stood outside the storeroom, gazing distantly at the great fire engulfing the manor, and faintly heard the Manor Master's cries of shock and fury, "Vermilion Bird Venerable? You're from the Four Symbols Sect, not the Blood God Sect!"
"Oh? How do you know it's the Blood God Sect?" A lazy, seductive female voice wafted through, "Sect Hierarch Xue... give me an explanation?"
No response came, perhaps it was too distant to hear. From this simple conversation, Zhao Changhe discerned that the main force was indeed the Blood God Sect, with the Sect Hierarch himself coming. However, they were merely the vanguard, and the real boss was the Four Symbols Sect—was this woman a Venerable of the Four Symbols Sect?
Not knowing her strength, but judging by the trembling voice of the Manor Master, it must've been terrifying, "My, my Luo Family has never offended your Four Symbols Sect, Vermilion Bird Venerable, who is among the world's elites, why..."
"If conflicts only arose from offenses, how would this chaotic world exist? So naïve, Manor Master Luo." The woman's voice seemed to yawn, the clash of Qi Forces intensifying, followed by a sudden scream from the Manor Master.
Shouts of "Demoness, how dare you!" echoed around.
Immediately after, another explosion-like sound occurred, and the woman's laughter carried far away. It appeared that a group of Luo Family experts were attacking her, yet she managed to wound the Manor Master amid the crowd, managing it with ease.
"What are you all standing around for?" Her lazy voice spread everywhere, shouts and cries grew louder, flames spreading all around.
Zhao Changhe turned and ran. This was no time to spectate; the intruders were here for a total annihilation—and wouldn't care if he had just arrived today! He sprinted out, snagging a single-blade from the weapon rack in the courtyard, and dashed towards the outer gate.
Just then, Luo Qi also dashed over with incredible agility, moving even faster than him in opening the door. They exchanged glances, both understanding the other's intentions, and charged out together.
The next moment, they both stopped in their tracks, painfully retreating.
Ahead, in the midst of the fire, Young Master Luo Zhenwu and his followers, in a panicked disarray, ran towards them, with several men in black embroidered with fresh blood hot on their heels, sneering, "Luo family dogs, where are you running?"
The Vermilion Bird Venerable fought alone against Luo family experts, while the people from the Blood God Sect took on the task of cleaning up the rest of the Luo family. Clearly, Luo Zhenwu was their primary target...
Unexpectedly, he had panicked and led the attackers right to them, blocking their way.
Damn it, who said this draw was a starting safe haven? From Zhao Mansion to Luo Family, where's the safety in that? Damn it, refund!
The leading black-clothed man, like a hawk spreading its wings, swooped towards Luo Zhenwu. Under the light of the fire, his palm emitted a startling red, aiming directly for Luo Zhenwu's back—a clearly deadly and wicked technique.
Suddenly, Luo Zhenwu grabbed a follower beside him and shoved them back.
Amidst a scream, the follower slumped lifelessly, dead on the spot.
Taken aback for a moment, the Blood God Sect follower chuckled, "Nice gentleman."
Luo Zhenwu had no time to deal with him, taking the opportunity to continue running towards Zhao Changhe and Luo Qi. The Blood God Sect follower flicked his wrist, releasing a cold gleam. Luo Zhenwu dodged hastily but couldn't avoid it completely, screaming as he grabbed his thigh and collapsed.
"Such and you broke through the Third Layer of the Mystical Gate?" The follower scoffed mockingly, raising his blade to strike.
At that moment, from under the moon, a soft sword cry sounded. Initially faint, like babbling brook water, it inexplicably swelled to a tidal wave, the sound resonating through the Nine Heavens, painfully vibrating eardrums.
The Blood God Sect follower looked up in terror, witnessing a cascading sword radiance falling from the heavens, the moonlight scattering like continuous spring water, the raging flames seemingly tender under this sword's influence.
But within this tender sword intent, the Blood God Sect followers staggered back in great disarray, his followers dying instantly around him, even their deaths carrying a gentle smile.
Zhao Changhe watched, dazzled.
A woman, stepping on the moon, floated forward, her sash billowing, as if a Moon Palace Fairy had descended to the Mortal World.
Backlit, her face was unclear, but it was obviously not Yue Hongling...
Are all women in this world so powerful?
"The Spring Water Sword Technique may sound a bit common, but it sure is impressive." The Vermilion Bird Venerable also flew towards them from afar, throwing a handful of dark "Dark Weapons" towards the woman descending from midair.
The woman instinctively knocked the "Dark Weapons" to the ground, her beautiful eyes narrowing.
What were believed to be Dark Weapons were actually several severed heads, one of which belonged to the Manor Master.
Luo Zhenwu dragged his injured leg backward in horror, hiding behind the woman.
The Vermilion Bird Venerable landed in the center of the arena, lazily chuckled. "I didn't expect that it would be Venerable Tang coming here in the dead of night. It seems Luo Family Manor indeed… ha-ha, but you are too late. The old Luo Family dog has died; why should Venerable Tang exhaust her sick body fighting us? You might as well go back."
Zhao Changhe discretely observed, realizing the Vermilion Bird Venerable was another woman in red attire, but whereas Yue Hongling's red was the robust attire of a samurai, this woman's red carried the essence of a ritual robe, embroidered with bizarre patterns.
She wore a half-faced mask, obscuring her features and age. The mask, shaped like a phoenix, covered the tip of her nose, leaving her bright red lips visible, which were quite seductive. The mask could not hide her eyes, however, which gleamed mischievously under the night sky.
The woman known as Venerable Tang, back turned to Zhao Changhe, was dressed in a thick fur coat. At the moment, she covered her mouth and coughed lightly; she indeed appeared somewhat breathless and frail after a spell of coughing before she slowly said, "This is Great Xia."
Between her words, footsteps sounded, and other Blood God Sect followers started to encircle them. One bloodied samurai said gravely, "All of the Luo Family's relatives have been executed, only Luo Zhenwu remains."
"Sect Hierarch Xue is appreciated," the Vermillion Bird chuckled. "Venerable Tang, we don't know why you came alone, but with your condition and alone, you can't protect the cripple behind you. It would truly be a pity if you sacrificed yourself here."
Venerable Tang didn't say much but simply pointed her sword at the opponent, leading to a tense standoff.
Zhao Changhe thought to himself that this so-called 'Venerable Tang' was probably some official designation. He didn't know why she came alone, perhaps the main forces would arrive soon. Noticing the Vermilion Bird's apprehension towards Venerable Tang, if they could just delay a little, maybe officials would arrive in time to rescue Luo Zhenwu.
Looking at Luo Zhenwu who was slumped on the ground dragging his injured leg, a plan formed in Zhao Changhe's mind. Suddenly popping his head out from behind a door, he shouted loudly, "Who said she's alone? As long as Venerable Tang holds them off, we can carry the Young Master and escape!"
Luo Qi was dumbstruck.
Everyone paused a moment, the Vermilion Bird Venerable and the followers of the Blood God Sect fixed their icy stares on him, even Venerable Tang glanced back.
Disregarding her delicate gaze that was as serene as autumn water, Zhao Changhe stepped forward briskly, lifting Luo Zhenwu up, "Young Master, I'll carry you!"
"Leave it," the Vermilion Bird Venerable casually threw a red light.
With a clang, Venerable Tang silently blocked it.
Seeing that escape might actually be possible, Luo Zhenwu leaned on Zhao Changhe, elated, and said, "Good, good, I knew you were honest and simple...uhh..."
Before he could finish, a long sword was thrust into his heart.
Luo Zhenwu's eyes widened in shock as he looked down at the sword in his heart, followed the length of the sword to the hands holding it, and finally the face of the holder.
Under the flickering firelight, Zhao Changhe's eyes bore not simplicity but ferocity.
Is the Mystical Gate Third Layer so great? It's not as if it makes one invincible to swords or spears!
Zhao Changhe knew Luo Zhenwu had some martial training, and if he had approached openly with a sword, Luo might have been on guard and impossible to kill. Only by pretending had he lowered Luo's guard, and indeed, he struck successfully.
Both the Vermilion Bird Venerable and Venerable Tang stopped fighting, seeming a bit dazed.
Gasping for breath, Zhao Changhe whispered, "This is my pledge to join the sect... Venerable, you won't let the officials take me, right?"
"Right," the Vermilion Bird's eyes moved fluidly, even stepping forward to shield Zhao Changhe.
Venerable Tang spoke indifferently, "A traitor to his master, what use is there in harboring him?"
"A traitor?" Zhao Changhe laughed loudly. "Him as a master?" He viciously drove the blade deeper: "When you slaughtered everyone at Zhao Mansion, did you ever think of today!"
Luo Zhenwu chuckled weakly, realization and regret in his eyes, but could no longer speak, soon dying.
Venerable Tang watched Zhao Changhe quietly, remembering the villages seen along the road, and understanding filled her. She sighed softly, "The weight of this matter is beyond your comprehension, you… will regret it."
Zhao Changhe pulled out the sword, responding loudly, "With my resolve clear, what is there to regret?"
"Enough," Tang Venerable shook her head and asked, "Would you dare to leave your name?"
"The murderer, Zhao Changhe!"
