Chapter 44: Ambush
''I'll handle the goblins over there. The rest… it's on you,'' Alaric told Khaled before darting off.
Pretty soon, he reached the horde. Without giving his prey a chance to react, he drew his sword in one smooth, quick motion and cleanly sliced a goblin's head off.
[System]: You've slain a green-core goblin.
[You gained 1 Chaos Point.]
''Gahajdshasbcjd!'' A nearby goblin screeched to alert the others—only to drop dead as an arrow punched through its skull.
Alaric frowned and shot a glance at Matt, who was backing him up from far distance.
''Tch. Damn. He stole my goblin.'' He clicked his tongue, but then a grin tugged at his lips.
''Fine then… let's make it a competition. Let's see who racks up more kills.''
With that, he faced the goblins charging at him after finally noticing the threat.
Alaric's figure vanished from where he stood, leaving the pack of goblins stunned and confused.
''Ahhhh!''
[System]: You've slain a green-core goblin.
[You gained 1 Chaos Point.]
Alaric yanked his longsword out of the chest of the goblin he just skewered—then disappeared again.

Some goblins fell instantly to Alaric's blitz-like movements, but the next moment, the horde split into three formations to slow Alarc's crazed, bloodthirsty speed. It worked to some extent—but to Alaric, it was barely an inconvenience.
He shifted his sword style and immediately began picking apart the goblins' formation, exploiting every tiny weakness he spotted.
With Matt's support, a rain of arrows punched through the goblins on the outer ring, creating small gaps for Alaric to slip through.
In the blink of an eye, Alaric used his sharp footwork to break through the first formation of the horde and crush it.

''Well, easy!''
His longsword was drenched in goblin blood, tasting its "freshness." But Alaric wasn't sure the sword appreciated it—the stench was foul, and goblin blood had a nasty corrosive trait.
Worse, with each kill, his sword's sharpness dulled a bit. Annoying as hell.
''Go to hell, bastard!'' Alaric snarled, thrusting the tip of his blade straight through a goblin's skull. Then, with a hard twist, he sliced the creature beside it clean in half. Finally, like a dancer in midair, he twisted his body and dropped a flurry of blows on the goblins around him.
[System]: You've slain a green-core goblin.
[You gained 1 Chaos Point.]
''Oh, no.'' Alaric scowled as he caught sight of a rusty sword swinging toward him. But before he could dodge, a big goblin crashed into him, pinning him down with its whole body—almost like it was trying to kill him by sacrificing itself.
''Not bad, scum!''
Alaric suddenly sensed an incoming arrow blasting toward him at lightning speed to support him. He flicked his eyes over for a split second to check it, then smirked.
"I don't need your help anymore."
He channeled mana into his longsword until it overflowed, shifted his stance, and unleashed a deadly, lightning-fast slash.
[System]: You've slain three green-core goblins.
[You gained 3 Chaos Points.]
Well… he had taken down three goblins at once before Matt could even steal his prey.
The horde froze. Terror spread through them after witnessing Alaric's slaughter. The remaining goblins shivered and stepped back.
A wave of hesitation rippled through their minds and instincts.
Alaric let out a breath and eyed the goblins, clicking his tongue.
"I'll leave them for Khaled. After all, he needs them more than I do."
He ordered Khaled to begin his brutal, bloodthirsty rampage on the rest of the goblins.
Meanwhile, Alaric went around collecting the mana cores scattered on the ground.
Of course, he also glanced at his summon to check his power… Uhm, it was hard to say, but watching Khaled felt unnecessary.
Unlike Alaric, Khaled was stronger than ever. Either way, Khaled was Alaric's teacher.
A completely one-sided battle.
With each downward slash, around ten goblins died. With just a kick, a goblin's head instantly burst into mud.
Not only that, Khaled performed his blows simply and slowly, as if he were strolling leisurely through the pack—yet he still killed the goblins like they were nothing more than insects.
"Tsk. Those goblins aren't enough for him to show his true power."
Alaric frowned as he witnessed how absurdly overpowered his summon was, watching Khaled casually pierce a goblin's chest by bare hands, take out the mana core, and toss it into his mouth.
[Your summon grows stronger]
Alaric blinked at the runes floating before him, then quickly summoned the system screen.
—
Name: Supreme Sword Demon
True Name: Khaled, [none], [none], [none],
Potential: Transcendent Potential
Evolution Stage: 1
Mana Core Count: 1 – [1/1000]
—
However, his expression only shifted a little…well, it was disappointing. He had expected his summon to grow much stronger, but the mana cores from goblins outside the dungeon were just too low-grade and weak.
"Damn, it's not even enough for a dessert."
By the time he dismissed the system screen, Khaled had already returned and was eating the mana cores from the goblins Alaric had killed.
As expected, Khaled's mana core counter increased by one.
[You have completed the Normal Mission]
[Reward: 15 Chaos Points]
—
[Personal] [Summon] [Gacha] [Mission]
Chaos Points: 485

"Great!" Alaric smiled happily at the system screen. He had killed around a hundred goblins to gain a hundred points, while Khaled would finish off the rest to take the remaining points. Luckily, the goblins his summon killed were still counted toward his total.
Suddenly, a chill crawled up Alaric's spine…a feeling of death. In that instant, he imagined his head bursting into a puddle of blood.
"A–A sneak attack?"
His body barely responded to the threat, and his brain didn't have enough time to command Khaled to protect him… Damn, this attack would certainly kill him.
But he wasn't surprised—he had already commanded Khaled in advance, knowing an assassin was coming for him.
Khaled appeared in front of Alaric instantly and swung a heavy yet lightning-swift slash, slicing the incoming arrow cleanly in half.
Boom!
Damn, an exploding arrow.
