Cave Refuge

Chapter 85 Daily Life in the Office Building_1

As for the 'front hall' style added to the entrance of the cave, Dong Tianyu had already thought of it. Even though reinforced concrete is abundant in the Shadow Space, Dong Tianyu does not possess the 'architecture' skill.

If he wanted to consume survival points to construct quickly, it could only be done within the cave mansion itself.

After much thinking, Dong Tianyu came up with a very convenient construction method which was to place two containers horizontally at the cave entrance as a makeshift door.

When going in and out, he could simply utilize the Shadow Space to remove the containers and reposition them back once he departed.

However, this 'lazy' method was quickly dismissed after a thought.

After all, Dong Tianyu spent most of his time in the cave mansion, so he couldn't block the eexit with the containers, as it would greatly inconvenience the access.

After much thought, though he could build the house inside the cave mansion first and then use Shadow Space to move it to the cave entrance, the Refuge Center has already been exposed. A sudden appearance of a house would attract even more attention.

Furthermore, if he doesn't live outside and builds a house, what if someone else moved in? Wouldn't that be asking for trouble?

While Dong Tianyu was immersed in his cultivation, the Dong family living in the office building began to gradually interact with others as the renovation of the Command Post was completed.

With the completion of the renovations on the top two floors, within a single day, the entire staff of the West City District Headquarters had moved from Jade Dragon Mountain to the office building.

Following the relocation of the headquarters, the relatives of the staff also moved in and took residence in the office building.

Contrastingly to the slew of Dongs occupying an entire floor, the relatives of the staff members were allocated across different floors based on the rank of their corresponding staff member.

In general, relatives could choose their residence according to the rank of their corresponding staff member.

The office building has a total of thirty-six floors; excluding the ten floors that have been flooded, twenty-six floors remain. Among the remaining twenty-six floors, the top two floors have been converted into office areas.

The thirty-third floor was transformed into a logistics department, while the eleventh and twelfth floors were used as storage for resources.

In other words, including the Dongs' residence, the remaining twenty floors were all planned to be residential areas.

Of course, apart from the office building where the Dong family resides, there are two other office buildings nearby where survivors also live.

With the completion of the relocation of the command post, the Dongs began to gradually interact with outsiders.

Since the elevator in the office building was now unusable, most members of the headquarters would pass by the residence of the Dong family during their daily commute of climbing the stairs.

The door at the staircase on the thirtieth floor wasn't like the doors on the other floors, which aroused the curiosity of many passersby.

Humans are, after all, not solitary animals. As time goes on, one will naturally integrate into the group.

Moreover, even though the Dongs occupied the thirtieth floor, they had arrived earlier, and so the officials treated them the same as everyone else.

When distributing relief food, they did not intentionally overlook the Dongs due to their offish attitude. Instead, someone was sent to knock on the door to remind them to pick up their food from downstairs.

The salvaged water-soaked food was stored directly on the ground floor. This time, the food was not distributed according to rank, but like the 1950s and 60s, it was distributed based on the number of people and their type of work.

The system consisted of no work, light work, and heavy work.

No work generally refers to the elderly and children, who were allocated a fixed amount of twenty pounds.

Adults were divided into light and heavy work types according to their jobs.

Those without a job or those with office positions were classified as light work, receiving thirty pounds of grain per person per month.

Those whose jobs were physically draining were classified as heavy work, receiving forty pounds of grain per person per month.

Furthermore, enough for three months was distributed at once. The reason is simple: the water-soaked grain cannot be stored for a long time. If left unused for three months, it would rot. Since it can't be stored, the officials simply handed all the grains to the survivors, letting them figure out their own preservation strategies.

Although crushing and frying could extend the shelf life of the grain, the process was too cumbersome and consumed too much manpower, making it unsuitable for mass production.

When the Dongs heard about the notice to collect food, they were very surprised. After all, they didn't expect the officials to remember them when distributing relief food since mostly they never left the thirtieth floor to interact with others after moving from the command post.

Upon hearing the announcement from the officials, the three households sat together and discussed it for a long time.

Eventually, they accepted the officials' goodwill, left the place to pick up the food downstairs, and at the food distribution site, they also learned about the method to deal with the water-soaked food.

Since they had already opened their door to collect food, there was no more consideration for seclusion. The Dongs gradually assimilated into the life of the office building.

When Dong Tianyu revisited the office building and saw the iron door of the thirtieth floor open, he was initially anxious, thinking that something had happened.

Upon entering hurriedly, in the wide hall, some middle-aged women were practicing singing in front of the windows. Among them, was his mother.

Their singing seemed to have transported him back to the peaceful life before the disaster.

It was like a comment once left under a singing video: "If their pensions are less than four thousand, they can't sing with the emotion you hear in their voices."

Seeing his mother standing happily among the crowd, Dong Tianyu knew there must not have been any major incidents.

Regarding the openness of the thirtieth floor to others, Dong Tianyu had mentally prepared himself. After all, for a family of about ten, it was a bit excessive to occupy an area of over one thousand to nearly two thousand square meters.

After the flood, aside from the survivors who chose to remain in their homes, most survivors who moved to the mountains lived in an area less than ten square meters.

So unless the Dongs kept themselves sealed off, as soon as they interacted with people and others learn about the situation on the thirtieth floor, inevitably, someone would covet it.

That was also why Dong Tianyu originally wanted to gather all his relatives to live in the office building.

Now that it's opened, it's all the better. Dong Tianyu was hoping to persuade his father this time around, hoping that his parents could gradually start interacting with others and eventually integrate.

Passing by the hall, he started to observe the situation in other rooms. First of all, his parents' office, which used to be the CEO's office, had its name changed. Words like "Private Residential, Please Keep Away" were scribbled on the walls and the door.

The same was for his second aunt's house and his aunt's husband's house; the same slogans were written on their doors and walls too.

The rest of the rooms were basically transformed into various types of recreational rooms. Some were filled with books from unknown sources.

In others, a few tables were set up for a game of chess. Because there were quite a number of spectators, Dong Tianyu could not make out which type of chess they were playing.

As for the liveliest room in the distance, just by listening, one could tell that they were playing poker.

It was not the kind played in casinos such as Blackjack or Texas poker, but the most common card game in Pengcheng, known as Level Up.

Before the disaster struck, every residential area would have one or two games going on every evening.
