Chapter 744: Light Pollution
Although the underground drainage was just an additional construction that the Officials installed to compensate for the underground air-raid shelters, they put quite some effort into it during construction, incorporating many ingenious designs inside.
And most crucially, compared to completely independent underground air-raid shelters, the underground drainage system, with its interconnected network of pipes, could facilitate immediate evacuation from problem areas when necessary.
Since there was nothing interesting to see in the underground drainage, Zachary merely took a brief tour and was ready to return.
Just as Zachary approached the staircase, he found his father and mother just coming out of it, exchanged a few simple words with them, and was ready to go back upstairs, not wanting to disturb his parents' subsequent visit.
When Zachary was about to go upstairs, Mr. Thompson suddenly seemed to remember something and asked him, "Son, have you been to the room across? "
Although he didn't know why his father suddenly asked about this, Zachary didn't think much of it and directly replied, "No, is there something wrong?"
"I arranged for a renovation of that room for you; you should go and see how well it was done." After saying this, Mr. Thompson took out a key from his pocket and handed it over to Zachary.
Zachary took the key from his father's hand without saying much and then went upstairs.
In fact, for Zachary, who possessed Spiritual Mind, dealing with most common locks was a non-issue, even with some special gravity locks, he could easily unlock them using his Spiritual Mind, so having a key or not did not matter to him.
After entering the room that belonged to him and turning around briefly, he noticed the interior design was quite simple, which could be described as a minimalist style. Nonetheless, all the basic facilities required for living were present.
Just when Zachary was about to lie down and rest for a while, he suddenly felt that the sunlight shining through the window into the room seemed to be growing increasingly intense.
Noticing this, Zachary immediately got up and went to the window to see what was happening outside.
Zachary, who had just walked to the bedside, noticed that the sunlight outside was especially dazzling today; he looked up at the sky and suddenly saw what appeared to be three suns overhead.
When he first saw this phenomenon, Zachary thought it was just multiple images created in his eyes from staring directly at the sun.
But as he closed his eyes, he suddenly remembered that the double sun phenomenon had appeared just before, so it was possible to have three suns overhead now.
To reconfirm what he had just seen was not mistaken, Zachary casually took out a pair of sunglasses from the Storage space and wore them to look up at the sky again.
Sure enough, as expected, there were indeed three suns hanging high in the sky.
At that moment, Zachary seemed to suddenly think of something, and took out a thermometer from the Storage space, casually placing it on the edge of the windowsill.
After waiting a few minutes, he picked up the thermometer from the windowsill, and saw that it still displayed temperatures around thirty degrees.
Normally, the more intense the outdoor sunlight, the higher the temperature would be outside, even in winter. If the sunlight was good, directly exposing a thermometer to the sun would register a temperature several degrees warmer than the actual temperature.
But even though the outside light was now quite glaring, the temperature displayed on the thermometer at the windowsill was not very high.
Although temperatures reaching thirty degrees outside before a Natural Disaster could still be considered high, even when outdoor temperatures were thirty-seven or thirty-eight degrees, the sunlight never seemed as blinding as it did then.
However, Zachary did not have the ability to change the outside weather, so he found some opaque, thick fabric from the Storage space and nailed it over the windows as makeshift blackout curtains.
The thickened fabric completely blocked the outside sunlight; once Zachary had covered all the windows with the thick fabric, the room felt as if it had entered into the darkness of night.
Even so, Zachary had no intention of drawing the curtains. Instead, he turned on the light switch, using the light bulbs for indoor lighting.
Just as Zachary finished retrofitting his room, the entrance door suddenly opened. After Father Dong and Mother Dong had toured the drainage pipes below, they came upstairs, saw no one in their room, and went over to Zachary's side.
As soon as they entered the room, they felt something was off, and Mrs. Thompson immediately noticed that Zachary had used thick, opaque fabric to cover all the windows.
Seeing Zachary pulling the curtains during daylight and turning on the lights, Mrs. Thompson immediately complained, "Why are you pulling the curtains and turning on the lights in broad daylight? Isn't that a waste of electricity? The sun is so nice outside; hurry up and open the curtains." Mrs. Thompson instinctively turned off the room's light switch as soon as she finished speaking.
After hearing what his mother said, Zachary did not follow her instructions, instead, he explained, "Mom, haven't you noticed there's something wrong with the outside?"
Seeing her son not immediately opening the curtains, Mrs. Thompson was not angry but approached the balcony window curiously, asking, "Isn't it all fine outside, what could be wrong?"
Then Mrs. Thompson directly lifted the curtain. As the sunlight-blocking curtain was pulled aside by her, a beam of sunlight even more dazzling than before penetrated the window and illuminated the room.
