Cave Refuge

Chapter 713: Insect Slaying

When the monster acquired the Blood Eye that could detect the location of nearby living beings, its speed of slaughter became faster and faster.

Although the monster possessed an ability that made it imperceptible to others, this ability was only effective against those with lower cultivation levels.

The reason it could always succeed wasn't that there were no high-level martial artists with profound cultivation in the temporary camps; on the contrary, most high-level martial artists did not take turns keeping watch at night. So by the time these powerful warriors realized the camp was under attack, the monster had already reached the camp to begin its massacre.

As the number of camps decimated by the monster increased, issues naturally arose. When a Martial Artist of the Path Entry Realm went out to relieve himself, he suddenly noticed a gigantic creature approaching their camp.

Even though the enormous creature was nearing the camp, the night watchmen, as if completely oblivious to its presence, remained indifferent at their posts.

Had it not been for the occasional whispers and chats among the watchmen, the Martial Artist might have thought they had fallen asleep on their feet and thus failed to notice the approaching behemoth.

The High-Level Martial Artist intended to reprimand the careless night watchmen, but seeing how close the massive creature had gotten to the camp, he knew his temporary camp was finished.

After all, even if he were to shout warnings of an attack, those in the camp would probably not be able to respond in time.

At that moment, the Martial Artist realized the brutal reality that the nearby camp was about to face. With a heavy heart, he could only abandon the camp, take out the warning fireworks he carried, and set them off to alert other camps to the crisis at hand.

The warning fireworks shot up into the sky immediately after their release, exploding into a bright red fireball and emitting a piercing sound.

The Martial Artist had intended to use the fireworks merely to warn other temporary camps of the danger, but its explosion in the sky also cast the monster's massive silhouette for all to see.

The Eight-Armed Monster stood over a hundred meters tall, its stature comparable to a skyscraper of twenty or thirty stories. It could have approached the camp quietly thanks to its stealth ability.

Even though its body was enormous, if it didn't actively draw attention, most people of low cultivation would unconsciously overlook it even when looking directly at it.

However, when the fireworks burst in the sky, most people instinctively turned their attention upward, and the explosion, unlike a normal firework that dissipates in an instant, was like a brilliant light that shone in the sky for about thirty seconds.

This situation was intended to alert others that a major crisis was indeed happening nearby; however, at this time, the illumination from the fireworks in the sky perfectly outlined the monster's massive body.

The monster's ability was simply to make it unconsciously overlooked by those with low cultivation, not real invisibility.

So when the fireworks illuminated the sky drawing everyone's gaze, the monster's gigantic form could no longer be hidden. When people saw it or actively surveyed their surroundings, the monster's ability to be overlooked naturally lost its effect.

Once it lost the ability to be ignored, its colossal frame was striking even at night.

Even though everyone had become aware of the monster's presence, the high-level warrior's camp was not spared, and even though he survived, the neighboring camps swiftly prepared but were ultimately annihilated by the monster.

The reason for their annihilation was simple: they were too close to the camp. The surviving members had not all been able to evacuate before the monster arrived and began its rampage.

Of course, such an efficient method of slaughter did not last long; once it was determined that they could hardly harm the monster, everyone no longer stuck together and instead scattered in all directions to escape.

By then, everyone had discovered that although the monster was massive, it lacked any special abilities. Whenever it intruded into a temporary camp to carry out a massacre, it generally relied on stomping, a very primitive method of attack.

Although being directly stomped by its giant foot meant certain death for almost everyone, the population of each temporary camp was only about a hundred or so. As these people scattered in all directions to flee, the monster temporarily could not kill everyone in the camp as it had done before.

Although the monster was not only large but also swift in its movements, compared to the scattered survivors trying to escape, some were eventually still killed by the monster.

But compared to other camps where everyone was wiped out clean, the people from this camp had already dispersed and fled by the time the monster prepared to strike other camps, leaving behind empty landing spots.
