Chapter 34: Adventurer's Guild
The Mistvale Adventurer's Guild.
It's an impressively massive five stories structure, with towering columns flanking the entrance and adventurers of all shapes and sizes—humans and Furrens alike—milling about. Some are clad in gleaming armor, others draped in flowing robes. The sheer presence of so many capable people makes my heart race as we approach the entrance. The sounds of chatter, laughter, and clinking metal fill the air, growing louder with each step.
Eris pauses at the towering doors, turning to me. "Are you ready?"
I nod, though deep down, I'm not sure if I'm ready at all. My heart is pounding, and my palms feel clammy, but I follow her inside nonetheless.
As we step in, the interior is even more impressive. A grand hall sprawls before us, filled with adventurers bustling around in groups, talking, laughing, and showing off their spoils of battle. Maps and bulletin boards cover the walls, and long wooden tables are scattered around where adventurers are either resting or strategizing.
The hall is divided into five large sections.
Near the entrance on the right is the Registration Desk, for new adventurers like me to register, as well as for those looking to form new parties. Opposite it is the Quest Board, where adventurers search for their next job. Further inside, there's a large area dedicated to Item Trading, where people barter and exchange goods with the Guild. Then, there's the Adventurer Inquiries section. Eris says it's for general inquiries—things like solving party loot disputes, addressing issues between groups, or reporting crimes within the dungeons.
And lastly, there's the Dungeon Library.
As its name suggests, it's a massive library that extends to the third floor. People can ask the staff on the main floor for information, or they can request to go to the upper floors to search for information themselves.
I expect Eris to take me straight to the registration booths. But, to my surprise, she leads me toward the Dungeon Library area.
Behind the counter stands a tall, slender lizard Furren. His professional attire is crisp and sharp, His posture is perfect—straight and tall. His white hair contrasts with the dark green scales peeking from his skin, and his slitted pupils focus intently as he speaks with another adventurer. He seems entirely composed, but as soon as he spots us approaching, I notice a subtle shift in his expression—just for a moment. Something flickers in his eyes, but it's gone as quickly as it appeared.
He nods subtly, gesturing for us to wait.
There's a name tag on his chest: It says: Karven.
A few moments later, the other adventurer departs, and Karven turns to us, offering a polite bow. His golden eyes briefly meet mine before shifting to Eris.
Without a word, he steps from behind the counter and motions for us to follow. He leads us to a door behind the counter, opening it quietly and gesturing for us to enter. There's no sign on the door. It's clear this is no ordinary public interaction, and my heart skips a beat.
I glance nervously at Eris, but she gives me a reassuring smile, gently squeezing my hand. Together, we follow Karven through the door, disappearing from the main hall.
————————-
After that, we follow Karven through a dimly lit corridor, the faint flicker of torches casting eerie shadows on the walls. The air grows colder as we descend a steep staircase, the silence stretching between us, thick and unnerving.
Step.
Step.
The stillness is killing me. It feels like we're descending into a secret underground lair, like something out of a dark cult's hideout. My heart races with each step, pounding in my chest as my mind swirls with questions. From the way they interact, it's clear that Eris knows Karven. She wasn't lying when she said she had connections here. But still…
But why do we have to be so secretive?
What's going on?
Eventually, we stop in front of a massive stone door, completely unmarked—no signs, no symbols. Just a heavy, cold slab of rock. Karven opens it effortlessly, revealing what's inside.
I blink in surprise. It's… just a regular room!
Yup, there's nothing ominous or cult-like at all—just a cozy, well-furnished space. Big, plush couches sit around a wooden table in the center, and there's even a tray of cookies and candies neatly displayed. The soft glow from a few lanterns hanging on the walls gives the room a warm, welcoming vibe.
"Please, have a seat," Karven says politely, motioning to the couches.
Karven gestures for us to sit down. Eris and I settle onto one of the couches. My eyes keep wandering to the cookies and candies, but I resist the urge to grab any. I'm way too nervous.
"Please wait here for a moment," Karven says with a polite bow. "The Guildmaster will be with you shortly."
"Yes, thank you, Karven," Eris replies.
With that, the lizard Furren exits the room, leaving us alone.
Eh?
Guild… master?
I whip my head around to face Eris, my eyes wide. "E-Eris, your connection is… the Guildmaster?"
She giggles, clearly enjoying my reaction. "Hihi, are you surprised?"
Uoooohhhh!
If Eris knows the Guildmaster, then I'm saved! I'll definitely be able to get my ID!
Heck yeah!!!
My heart fills with relief, and a bit of excitement, too. This whole time, Eris had this ace up her sleeve. No wonder why she was so confident!
But… despite this, there's still one thing I don't get.
If Eris knows the Guildmaster…
Then… why do we have to meet them in secret like this?
