CASE - A Fluffy Lesbian Science Fiction

Chapter 111: Out of Breath

My helmet's HUD was bright red with a multitude of warnings as my suit blared a radiation alarm into my ears which almost distracted me from the fact that I practically couldn't breathe.

"Lauren!" I could just hear Eva's voice over all the noise as she slid against me and leant over my body and tried to move the metallic creature on top of me but she couldn't even make it budge. "Shit!" She called out. "Quick, Gunny, get over here! I need to get this thing off her!"

"I… I can't… My breathe."

"Try to save your oxygen, Lauren. Don't speak too much. The impact has probably broken a couple of your ribs as well." She physically held my shoulders down against the ground so I wouldn't try to move too much.

"Keep the perimeter and watch the ceilings!" Sergeant De Smet yelled over all channels to keep the command structure going. "You lot, grab your weapons and get back to the firing lines. You three, guard the Commander!"

"Are you sure you want to get this off her? The thing is lodged in her leg. It will start bleeding if we remove it."

As I felt my nose starting to bleed, Eva commanded Gunny again. "This thing is highly radioactive. I need it gone so I can seal the suit and get DiluFast into her system as fast as possible. She's already showing signs of radiation poisoning."

Gunny didn't need any more convincing as he dropped his weapons and squatted down to get a good grip on the mechanoid assassin's husk.

Eva beckoned another marine nearby to hold my legs down. "Okay, Lauren, this will hurt a lot. Bite down, okay? Go!"

As Gunny lifted the monstrosity of of me, the movement of the blade set shots of pain through my body that were so bad that my muscles started to spasm and it almost felt like my bite would break my own teeth. But thanks to both Eva and the other marine's presence I managed to limit my movement enough to not hurt myself any more in the process.

"Oxygen levels are declining rapidly. 20% oxygen remaining." My suit notified the people around me.

Eva took a can out of her medic pack and started to spray some cold liquid on my leg which quickly started to sting as well, though it did feel like it lessened the pain somewhat. "Okay, this should do until we get her on the surgery table." She then took out another can in combination with a metallic looking sheet. "Now to seal the suit back up again."

"10% oxygen remaining…" My suit warned again. "7% remaining…"

"Shush. Stop being so dramatic, I'm pretty much done." She quickly applied the sheet on my leg and sprayed it over with the contents of the can.

"Suit integrity reestablished. Cleansing atmosphere. Oxygen levels are increasing."

"Okay, now I need three doses of DiluFast." Eva held her hand out for someone to hand to doses to her.

As Gunny gave her the first dose he looked back at me and then at Eva. "Three, are you sure? That shit's pretty heavy."

Eva took the DiluFast out of Gunny's hand and rammed it through the injection port on my thigh but that pain only barely registered in contrast with the other immense pain I was going through. "Yes, three. Otherwise she won't make it."

One of the other marines gave her another dose which she immediately jabbed in me as well though that one registered even less with me than the previous.

I felt my eyelids get heavy and I almost allowed them to close when Eva shook my shoulders. "Stay awake, Lauren. Don't let yourself slip away! I need you to stay alive, you hear me!?" She shook my shoulders again. "I need my battle concoction, it's in my rightmost back pocket." Eva then injected me with the third dose DiluFast while Gunny checked Eva's uniform and handed her an even larger looking tube.

"Is this one it?"

"Yes." Eva took it and bowed over me, looking me straight in the visor. "Lauren, this will make your entire body feel like it's burning up from the inside out, but it will keep you with us." She then pressed the back of the tube and a giant needle popped out. "And the sting's not pleasant either." Then in one smooth movement she injected it in my thigh as well and I swear to the Goddess it felt like she hit my bone as that injection I definitely could tell apart from the rest of the pain.

The pain instinctively made me suck in air and I felt wide awake in an instant. If Eva didn't keep me down anymore I would have sat up in an instant. The burning sensation that Eva had described, started spreading from my thigh through the rest of my body, although that was somewhat of a welcome diversion from the regular pain. Though it was still not incredibly pleasant.

"Looks like it's working, good." Eva checked up on the seal on my leg again and then laid her hand on my chest near my left shoulder and tapped it twice. "You are going to be fine, Lauren. Hang in there. We will get you out of here."

"Thank you." Speaking felt a bit easier than before.

Eva nodded and looked at the marine next to me. "Can you sit her up over there? I want her to be busy with something so she doesn't drift away." She pointed at the area where our communications experts were working on the transmission apparatus. "And give her her gun as well." She then looked at Gunny. "And you, go back to the firing lines and make sure none of those canine mechanoid bastards get through."

"I'll blast them all to bits." Gunny replied, taking his machineguns back up again. "Commander, let's fuck them up."

"Right behind you…" I almost chuckled but the pain stopped me as the other marine dragged me away. "Go get them all." As I said that I got a better view of all the blood that was smeared on the floor next to the mechanoid machine. I was surprised I was still breathing after losing that much blood.

Gunny saw me staring at the pool of blood as he reattached his last machinegun. "Let's not show any pictures of that to the XO. She is going to be tilted enough when we get you back to this ship." He pumped both of his arms in the air, charging the guns and then walked towards one of the hallways where we had the least amount of troops defending. -Yeah… Luna is going to kill me enough already…-

"Comfortable enough, Lauren?" Eva spoke to me as the marine had put me against the wall he was ordered to do so, having pushed my gun into my weak arms as well.

"...Yeah…" I bit through the pain.

Eva beckoned the other marine to leave my close proximity to stand guard a little bit further away with his two comrades, as she set up shop beside me.

I couldn't help but feel my presence here was a bit of a distraction to our people fixing the communications but I wasn't about to ignore my Doctor's orders. And even if I wanted to, I couldn't move. With effort I managed to touch the side of my helmet to open a direct channel to Eva's voice communications. "Now that we are… one-on-one… Am I going to make it, Doc? That's a lot of blood..."

Eva's hand movements stopped for a moment before she continued. "I told you you were going to be fine."

"Eva… That much blood? Three doses?"

"70%" Eva replied coldly. "And that's being generous. It all depends on if you are going to go into shock or not." That was a pretty hard pill to swallow. "My special recipe should help with that though, I designed it to keep a body going in extreme conditions but I have not tested it yet. I hoped I wouldn't have had to use it, but it appears that I had to test it on my best friend instead..." Eva sighed deeply and laid her hands on her equipment belt. "That's why I absolutely can't let you go to sleep."

"I'm wide awake… If that's any reassurance…"

"That's good, it means the adrenaline part of that injection is doing its part. Added risk factor being a heart attack though." Eva started tapping on a holoscreen with her bloody fingers. "Heartrate 160 but stable…"

"Seeing that… you'd almost think… I was making out… with Luna..."

"The fact that you can still crack jokes in this kind of situation baffles me, Lauren."

"Not my first time… at Death's door…" I shifted my back around a little bit to get my comfort up just a tad more, but the only thing I managed to do was to cause myself a bit more pain. "Better than crying."

"You are one of a kind, Lauren. I'm going to make sure that 70% turns into 100%."

As Eva said that, I could see some commotion from the marines in front of me so I set my helmet back to receive all signals.

"We did it, Commander. The uplink is done." The marines were so jubilant you'd almost think this was their first time setting up something like this, but given the situation… I definitely understood.

"Commander, Do you copy? Can we commence uploading the virus?" I was glad to hear Ellie's voice in my ear, even though it was a bit crackly thanks to the bad connection.

"Go ahead, Ellie… We are waiting with… bated breath…"
