Chapter 5: Beggar King

In a small, rundown room, a boy about seven years old lay in bed in a fetal position, clutching his pillow over his head to muffle the noise coming from outside. Despite his efforts, the sounds persisted, prompting him to pick up his pillow and blanket and head towards his closet. For him, this closet was the safest place in the old house.

Inside, the boy tried his best to fall asleep, but the noise was overwhelming. The sudden cries of his baby sister made it even worse. He had despised his sister ever since she arrived one year ago, believing she had ruined his life.

In the cramped closet, he struggled to sleep. After a few minutes, exhaustion finally overcame him, and he fell asleep.

"Rafael, wake up and clean the vomit from the floor. Also, change your sister's diaper. That smell is awful!"

The young boy named Rafael hastily woke up, hearing his mother's voice. "Okay, Mom, I will do it," he replied. Rafael quickly got up, made his bed, and went to the kitchen to clean the vomit from the floor. It was not his baby sister who had made the mess but his father. Rafael's father was an alcoholic and always came home late at night from drinking. This drinking habit led to constant arguments between his parents, as his father frequently vomited in the house. Rafael's mother was tired of his drinking and the mess he made.

Rafael's mother often said that his father was once a wealthy businessman, but one night he gambled all his money and property away at a casino. From that moment on, the two things he did permanently were drinking and limping on one leg.

After cleaning up the mess his father had made, Rafael went to his parents' room to change his baby sister's diaper. He did it with expertise, but at that moment, he heard his mother's voice from behind, saying, "Rafael, I got a letter from the school that you have been absent for few weeks. Go to school today. I don't want your teacher to come to our house again, nor do I want to see your father beating you with the belt again."

At the mention of the belt, Rafael visibly trembled with fear. He quickly replied to his mother, "I'm sorry, Mom. Please don't tell Father. I will go to school today. Just please don't tell him."

His pleading voice made his mother look at Rafael with a soft gaze. "Okay, my love, I will not tell your father, but you have to promise me that you will not be absent from school from now on. Okay?"

Hearing his mother's words, Rafael became very happy and replied cheerfully, "Okay, Mom, I promise!" After doing a few household chores, Rafael prepared to head towards school. At that moment, his mom gave him $2 to eat at McDonald's. His mother had two jobs, one of them as a waitress at a restaurant, so she was very busy and didn't have time to prepare breakfast for him. As for his father, he worked at a construction job as a crane operator from morning until midnight, so Rafael only saw his parents in the morning and at night. But even that time was taken away from him when his baby sister was born a year ago.

Rafael despised his baby sister because she took all his parents' attention and love away from him. He wondered why his parents only gave attention to his baby sister, even though she only did three things: crying, eating, and pooping. He was also afraid that his baby sister would eventually take all of his parents' love away from him and that he would be abandoned. That's why he tried his best to help around the house so his parents wouldn't abandon him.

After saying goodbye to his mother, Rafael quickly ran toward the school bus stop, hoping to make it through the day without any problems. At school, Rafael headed to his first period. When he entered the class, everybody stared at him like he was some kind of anomaly. The stares from everyone, including the teacher, made Rafael very nervous, so he quietly but quickly went to his seat in the last row and laid his head down until the lunch break.

In the cafeteria, Rafael was the only kid sitting alone, eating nothing, just staring at the clock and waiting for school to end. At that moment, a small voice with a hint of arrogance came from behind. "So, the beggar king finally showed his face. Are you still wearing the same clothes I saw many weeks ago? Even your shoes are the same."

Rafael turned his head and saw three boys his age. The arrogant voice belonged to a black-haired, blue-eyed, slightly chubby boy in the middle. "Jack, go away and stop bothering me!" Rafael snapped.

Jack cheerfully smiled and giggled. "Look at my new shoes that my daddy bought me. They were made in China and cost $100 million. And when I take a step, they glow." Jack started walking in a circle, showing off his new glowing shoes. "See? I told you they glow."

The two boys next to Jack looked at the glowing shoes with envious gazes, and even Rafael couldn't help but glance at them. "The shoes look ugly. I bet they don't even cost a dollar," Rafael replied in an annoyed tone.

Jack quickly responded, "No, they do not!" The two boys behind Jack echoed, "Yes, they do not!"

Rafael said loudly, "They do!"

Jack giggled and spoke. "Well, my father gave me new shoes but look at yours. They're all ripped apart, and some of your toes are showing. Your father must be very poor. I can ask my daddy to give you my old shoes. They'd be better than what you have, but you must beg like the beggar king you are.

The two boys next to Jack started chanting, "Beggar king! Beggar king!"

Hearing this, Rafael became furious and shouted, "Your shoes are ugly! Your face is ugly! And your father is a poopy head!" Then, staring at the two boys behind Jack, he pointed at them and said, "Both of you are dogs!"

Hearing that, the three boys screamed and lunged at Rafael, punching and pulling his hair. The commotion quickly drew the attention of the other children in the cafeteria, and a teacher began hurrying over to break up the fight. Rafael and Jack were on the ground, grappling and fighting furiously. Despite his efforts, Rafael, being smaller and weaker, was quickly overwhelmed by the combined strength of the three boys.

Jack climbed on top of Rafael's stomach and started landing punches on his face and body, while the other two boys, James and Michael, joined in, kicking and hitting wherever they could. Desperate and in immense pain, Rafael reacted instinctively. With a surge of anger and desperation, he bit down hard on Jack's arm, making Jack scream in pain.

Jack, enraged by the biting, retaliated with even more force. He and the other two boys rained punches down on Rafael, focusing on his face. Rafael tried to protect himself, but the three-on-one was too much for him. He felt the blows landing harder and harder until his vision started to blur. Just before he passed out, he felt a sharp pain in his mouth as two of his teeth were knocked out.

A few seconds later, Rafael began to regain consciousness and saw his homeroom teacher standing over him. Rafael disliked this teacher the most because she came to his house to complain to his father about him. At the school she was known for being very strict teacher,

"Rafael, Jack, James, and Michael, how many times do I have to tell you not to fight? Now look at yourselves, you're all injured and bruised. Rafael, didn't I tell you not to bite people? Only animals bite, not humans."

Hearing their homeroom teacher's stern voice, the three boys immediately started crying. Rafael, however, just stared at the ground intensely, saying nothing.

"Stop crying and follow me to the nurse's office," the teacher commanded.

The boys, bruised and battered, followed the teacher to the nurse's office, leaving behind a silent cafeteria filled with curious and concerned faces. Rafael, walking behind his teacher with a sad face, wondered why his family was so poor even though both of his parents worked very hard. In contrast, Jack's father was the only one working while his mother stayed at home, yet Jack always had new clothes and shoes. He even had shoes that cost $100 million dollars. It baffled Rafael that despite both his parents working, they could only afford to give him second-hand clothes. Because of this, other kids started calling him beggar king.

Rafael didn't like going to school because the kids made fun of him, and no one was willing to be his friend. He always felt alone there. School wasn't a place where he learned to read or write; instead, it was where he learned that his family was very poor. one months ago, Rafael decided to save his lunch money, given to him by his mother, to eventually buy himself new clothes and shoes. He hoped that by doing so, he could make lots of friends and stop being called "beggar king."

After Rafael and the three other boys were treated for their injuries, their homeroom teacher told them to bring their parents to the school. Until then, they were not to return to school. The teacher handed each boy a letter to give to their parents. Hearing this, Rafael became very nervous for the rest of the day. He couldn't stop thinking about how to break the news to his parents. He feared that his father might be angry with him again, stop loving him, or even worse, abandon him.

After school ended, Rafael reluctantly made his way home, his mind racing with anxiety.
