Chapter 37: Renting Manuals
"I'm sorry, but you can't bring people in with you," the dean said.
Yu Tian looked around.
So this is the scripture hall, he thought.
Anyway, the sect master's daughter really had it rough, Yu Tian thought, looking at the dean before him. He thought to himself that although this was indeed a rule that you couldn't bring people in as they had to pay for themselves, the dean didn't give the lady any face at all.
He looked around where people were beginning to gather, all gossiping in low voices about the situation.
He sighed. "Should we go back? It's not even that important anyway," Yu Tian said.
"No," she said, looking angrily at the smirking dean. "He's my attendant. Why am I not allowed to bring him in?" she asked.
He smirked. "These are the rules placed by our ancestors. Even if he is your attendant, he can't get in. Even if it's Lady Su, you can't break the rules," he said.
"I'll pay for him," she said, throwing her card at the dean, who caught it.
"Ah... we can't do this, Lady Su," the man spoke.
"What now? Is that against the rules too?" she asked.
"That's right," the man said.
"What? Since when?" she asked angrily.
"Ah, Lady Su was away and might not have heard about it yet. Due to increased bullying of new disciples by higher-ranked disciples, we have introduced a new system where you can't spend contribution points for someone else," he said.
Xueling had an angry expression. This was clearly not true. Since when did the sect care about things like this? The sect master considered this sort of thing as training for the newbies to prepare them for the dangers of the cultivation world.
And Yu Tian was clearly just in the Qi Gathering realm - how could he be threatening her? This was clearly just to humiliate her.
She exhaled deeply. "Alright," she said.
The dean smiled at her words, stretching out his hand to return her card. But she didn't take it. Instead, she smiled.
"I am a core disciple, so I should be able to rent manuals, right?" she asked.
"Ah... this is..." the dean was surprised by this. He hadn't prepared for this. He was about to come up with something, but he felt a strong aura descend upon him.
"This is..." he looked at the lady in shock. Such aura - it was even heavier than Su Ming's.
The others who were watching the spectacle also found themselves pressed to the ground, unable to move. The dean was also using all his might to resist the suppression. He thought to himself that he just wanted to give the lady a hard time to get some benefits from the young master.
Who would've thought that the lady was actually a crouching tiger?
As he was wondering what to do, he felt the aura that was pressing down on him suddenly disappear.
"Xiao Ling, why are you bullying fellow sect disciples?" Su Ming spoke as he walked in.
Xueling looked at him. "Don't call me that," she said in irritation.
Su Ming just smiled. "Although the dean is at fault for making things difficult for you, harming fellow disciples is not right," Su Ming said.
The other disciples who had now gotten up began murmuring.
"That's right," one said.
"We were just watching and couldn't interfere with the dean's work. Why is the lady taking it out on the bystanders?" another said.
"This is too much," another added.
Su Ming smiled hearing this.
Xueling sighed. Her first brother was really good at influencing others.
Well, she wasn't really one to care about reputation. She already didn't have a reputation to begin with, so why should she care about social pressure? She exerted an even stronger pressure than before and forced those who were getting up to fall back down.
This time, even the dean was on the ground, unable to get up.
She then stared at Su Ming.
"So what? I don't care about these weak disciples," she said.
…
Su Ming had an angry expression. This girl didn't listen to reason.
He exhaled and then smiled. Even so, he had confirmed his earlier suspicion.
He looked at Yu Tian next to her. She even revealed her power publicly for all to see after hiding it for so long - all because of Yu Tian. It seemed when it came to him, she was unable to think rationally.
Well, since she liked him so much, he could find a way to take advantage of this.
It's just a Qi Gathering disciple. Can she protect him forever?
"Xiao Ling, don't take things too far," he said. "How about this - I'll let you rent as many manuals as you want from my pocket," he said.
Xueling smiled when she heard this. "Really? As many as I want?" she asked.
"Mmh, why do I feel like I've said the wrong thing?" he wondered. But before he could take his words back, she released the pressure and appeared before the dean.
"You heard him, right? Give me a hundred manuals. The best ones you've got. And don't try any funny business - I'll know instantly when you try to give me trash," she said.
"A hundred... that's..." the dean began, but she interrupted.
"Didn't you hear what my older brother said?" she asked.
"Alright, right away," the dean said as he left.
"~This is as much as I can get for you. If I take any more than this, it might cause problems. Even the sect master might get involved," she said to Yu Tian through voice transmission.
"~It's more than enough," Yu Tian said. "~Besides, we can always rent different ones after we're done with these ones," he added.
"~That's right," she said with a smile.
Su Ming watched with a displeased expression.
Renting a hundred books? That was like half his entire sect contribution points. What did she even need a hundred manuals for? He chuckled. Looks like she's still just a kid, acting so petty and doing this just to get back at him. He couldn't back down now since everyone had heard him say this.
He then glanced at Yu Tian, who was now a few feet away from Xueling.
"Right now, can I?" he wondered. But he suddenly felt a chill run down his spine. He turned, wondering what was happening, only to notice Xueling looking at him with extreme killing intent.
"Looks like it's impossible right now," he thought.
He then smiled. "I'll take my leave now. Remember to return the manuals once you're done, and don't make copies."
