Chapter 668: It’s time to get over the past.
Daniel suddenly remembered it all. And the pieces finally clicked into place from the day when he first saw him with Arwen … when she introduced him as her husband.
No wonder he looked familiar.
He had met him back then.
But wait …
They met again after so many years … Was this a coincidence or destiny?
His brows furrowed as he glanced back at Ryan. "They had known each other from the beginning." He was referring to Arwen and Aiden.
However, Ryan didn't seem to believe the same. Chugging his scotch, he set the glass at the table and shook his head. "It doesn't seem so. Arwen didn't look that familiar to him. She —"
"You can't say that for certain, Ryan." Daniel intervened before Ryan could even finish speaking about his doubts. And when he saw his brows furrowing, he explained his reasons. "In all these years, you have barely cared to know Arwen. Her past stands still out of the question."
"Furthermore, we have both seen them together. And from the start, they have always looked perfect together. Their history is evident, even if you want to deny it."
Daniel was not sure of Ryan, but he had seen it with his very own eyes. And he would never deny it.
Aiden and Arwen looked perfect together. Even if this was just a mere coincidence, he believed it was a coincidence created by their strong destiny.
Ryan's fingers clenched around the bottle before he poured himself another drink.
"Evident history?" Taking a strong sip, he scoffed, "What evident history are you talking about, Daniel. They probably have no history, no destiny between them. If they had, he wouldn't have left her that day like that."
Pointing his fingers out, he continued with a tone full of grudge. "Although she didn't undergo any severe surgery, still, how could he leave her there … alone —without any care. Is that how the people with history behave? Irresponsible." He swallowed a big mouthful of his drink and shook his head in reproach. "He didn't even come back. He —"
"No, Ryan," Daniel cut him off. "That's not true."
Ryan didn't understand. He paused and stared at him, only to see him shake his head at him. "What are you trying to say?" he asked
Daniel looked at him with sympathy. He knew what Ryan was trying to do. But he couldn't let him weave those delusions now when everything was finally coming to light.
"I am just letting you see the truth, Ryan. Nothing else," he said before giving him a weak smile. Then, taking a small sip, he continued, "He didn't leave her without any care, Ryan. That day, he left after making sure of everything."
Ryan looked clueless, and Daniel was not surprised, for he knew Ryan hadn't seen Aiden making arrangements. It was he who had seen it all.
That day, Daniel might not have known Aiden's identity, but the way he had seen him making frantic calls just to ensure that Arwen was looked after throughout the surgery gave off the aura he still couldn't forget.
"South City Hospital wasn't the best hospital in Cralens, Ryan. Then, why do you think the great Clark family appeared to participate in a simple case of an accident that doesn't even match up to the complicated medical cases they deal with every day?"
Daniel reminded, and the knit between Ryan's brows only intensified at his words.
At that time, they didn't know the Clark family, but they heard the hospital staff making an expensive fuss out of it.
Ryan stared up at Daniel, and understanding his gaze, Daniel nodded. "It was probably him," he confirmed. "When he was exiting the hospital that day, I heard him making a few calls. He was asking someone to arrange it."
Ryan's expression froze.
"He might have left her in the hospital, but he had made sure that she was well taken care of even when he wasn't around."
"But why did he have to leave her?" Ryan asked, almost frustrated. If only Aiden hadn't left her that day, there would have been no misunderstanding today. "He didn't even come back to visit her."
Daniel shook his head again. "He did come back," he said, his voice gentle.
"He came?" Ryan was taken aback.
And Daniel confirmed with a hum. "Yes, he did. The next day, he came, but then he left, seeing you there in her room with her parents. I saw him standing outside the ward for a long time. But just when I thought he would go inside, he instead turned and left."
Daniel still remembered. Aiden had come the other day.
"If he had come there, why hadn't he come in and told everyone everything? Why did he leave?" Ryan frowned.
However, Daniel shrugged. "I don't know. He never stopped to answer me. He just left."
And then Ryan suddenly remembered Aiden's words from the day he went to his company. He hadn't understood what he meant then,
But today, maybe he knew …
When something is not meant to be yours, no matter how hard you try to claim it —you can never truly have it. Not by pretending. Not by lying. And definitely not being someone you are not.
As Ryan recalled all those words again, he understood what it all implied.
He closed his eyes, and guilt and embarrassment took over him.
Was he really to be blamed?
Daniel looked at him and felt bad for his friend. He stood and placed his hand over his shoulder. "It's fine, brother. That was the past, and it's time to get over it. Don't burden yourself with something you can't change."
Even though he said it like that, Ryan only felt the weight pressing him beneath the guilt.
Daniel was about to offer another drink when he paused, hearing the doorbell ring.
His brows furrowed a little as he glanced at Ryan once and muttered under his breath. "Who could come to your place this late?"
Ryan didn't respond, and noting his mood, Daniel didn't ask again. He simply said, "It's fine. I will go and check."
