Prologue

The man floated in a vast, silent void, weightless and untethered. A faint hum vibrated through him now and then, or a fleeting whiff of something sharp and unfamiliar brushed past. It was enough to keep him from unraveling entirely, a thin thread of calm in a place where nothing else reached him.

He didn't know who he was, where he came from, or how long he'd been there—time didn't exist in this emptiness. His mind felt like a house stripped bare, no memories or meaning left to anchor him.

He just drifted, a shadow of himself, untouched by the world beyond.

A sudden sharp pain sliced through his core, yanking him back into a body that felt broken and wrong. Exhaustion and raw agony washed over him, muddling his thoughts into a haze.

Then a surge of heat hit—like fire coursing through his veins—forcing his eyes open. The world assaulted him with blurred shapes and jagged sounds, none of it making sense.

He clawed at the confusion, trying to grasp what he was even looking at.

His eyes struggled to focus, the world appearing strange and unfamiliar. Yet, even through the haze, he could see a creature leaning above him.

Grime and shadows clung to its form, hiding any recognizable features, including a face. Instead, he could only see a warped image of himself reflected back, sending a shiver down his spine.

The smell that came off the figure was one of rot and decay.

With a forceful grip, the creature's claw pressed against his chest, piercing his flesh with a chilling coldness.

All the while, an alarm blared relentlessly, and a chorus of distant shouts swirled around him, amplifying his confusion to new heights.

Desperation welled up within him, urging him to scream, to fight it off, but his feeble body and clouded mind prevented any sound from escaping.

Not that he recalled the words needed to.

He remained imprisoned within his own flesh, forced to watch as the creature exerted pressure on his convulsing frame, siphoning something important from his body and mind.

Ultimately, all that remained in his mind were silent screams, amplifying the violence of his trembling body until darkness embraced him.
