Chapter 173: A Normal Protagonist

Xu Mo asked if he could see the Clan Head's daughter, who was also the Female Protagonist, just so he could judge her character and tolerance level — and whether her brain functioned like a normal human's.
"You misunderstood me. I am already an engaged man. I just wanted to observe your daughter's condition with my own eyes; maybe I might find a way to solve it. Otherwise you don't have anything to lose, right?" Xu Mo wore a calm smile.
The Clan Head was a little confused. He had never met someone who belonged to a great sect above all, who was the True Successor of that sect, and who was also a Gold Core Realm cultivator — someone speaking with him, a mere peak Foundation Building realm cultivator — even though there was only a single realm's difference. Only Heaven knew how many people had forever remained stuck under the Gold Core Realm.
Xu Mo had already explained that he wanted to see if he could find something about the Clan Head's daughter's sudden fall from being a genius.
The Clan Head did not want to test Xu Mo's patience any longer, so he asked someone from the clan to go and call his daughter.
In the meantime, Xu Mo and the Clan Head sat back down. Xu Mo talked about how he had just come out from the sect to go and meet his fiancée. Though there was a small lie in it, Xu Mo really had nothing else to discuss.
"The Hidden Dragon Sect rules over all the nearby cities, but I have not heard much about your excellency."
"Xu Mo."
'Huh?' The Clan Head pursed his lips and frowned.
"Call me Xu Mo. I am not much older than your daughter."
"X—Xu Mo." The Clan Head spoke Xu Mo's name slowly and carefully. He also felt a little proud inside, since it was not every day he would meet a Gold Core Realm cultivator — and this cultivator was such a mannered and principled young man.
He liked Xu Mo more and more.
"Father, you called for me." A young girl's voice sounded from the entrance of the hallway.
Xu Mo just sat there admiring the sculptures on the wall; he would wait until it was his turn to speak. He needed to be extra careful with such a protagonist, who might know if she was a system carrier and might be notified about his script of being a villain.
"Shuyin, come here. Someone is here to check upon your condition."
Xu Mo felt someone's gaze fall upon him, and he slowly diverted his attention away from the wall toward the girl called Shuyin.
He was expressionless, but inwardly he knew he had taken a very dangerous step, so he waited to observe some reaction from the girl. Upon seeing no change, coupled with her eyes that still carried the ignorance of youth and teenage years, he relaxed further — at least she wasn't a reincarnated type.

"Miss, my name is Xu Mo, from the Hidden Dragon Sect. Can you tell me how you reached your current condition? What were you like before, and now what happens that is stopping you from absorbing more spiritual energy?" Xu Mo kept a formal tone.
The girl looked at her father after Xu Mo finished speaking, like she was looking for some sort of approval before confirming whether it was safe to speak with this person called Xu Mo.
Getting the Clan Head's approval by seeing him nod, she started speaking.
"This condition began a year ago. Before, I was about to reach the ninth realm of Qi Refinement. Every day when I woke up I felt a slight decrease in my spiritual energy in my Dantian. At that time I didn't think much about it, believing that it might be related to the techniques I practiced." She pursed her lips, feeling how unfair the heavens had been to her. Someone arrogant who disregarded the lives of others like Bai Yuntian was rewarded with so much talent.
"However, I was wrong — extremely wrong. As I tried to absorb spiritual energy, it started disappearing as soon as it got within a few inches of me. After that I told my father, and he asked the elders' opinions, even going as far as to hire many famous practitioners of medicine and alchemists to take a look at my condition. Unfortunately, the result was nothing."
When she spoke the final sentence, it really felt like she had given up hope of becoming a cultivator who would be able to inherit the family; her voice came out rough, as if she were holding back the urge to cry her heart out.
'Is she also like Long Chen?' thought Xu Mo, as he dared not ask whether she had recently picked up any suspicious artifact or obtained anything sudden. Who knew if the soul inside that thing was still able to eavesdrop on what was happening around it.
"May I?" Xu Mo asked before checking her pulse, since he would need to hold her wrist.
She nodded, and Xu Mo dared not be presumptuous; he maintained the width of a hair between his palm and her wrist. This distance, he judged, was enough to retreat safely if anything inside her tried to absorb his spiritual energy.
Xu Mo kept a calm expression. The Clan Head came close and stood a step behind his daughter, not daring to disturb the True Successor of the Hidden Dragon Sect.
A moment later, Xu Mo shook his head and stepped back as soon as the examination ended.
"Unfortunately, I am unable to find any reason. Maybe if the ancestor of the Hidden Dragon Sect were here, he would have been able to find the cause."
Meanwhile, what Xu Mo and the other two did not know was that at this moment each of their movements was under the gaze of someone else.
"What a monster. I never thought there would come a day when I would witness a peak Ninth Grade Core. Unfortunately, I am a female cultivator..." The soul floated inside a separate space within the locket hanging around Shuyin's neck.
She had been asleep for too long, betrayed by her husband, used as a furnace, and refined into a pill. She didn't belong to this Lower Realm; she was someone from the Upper Realm. She could tell because the spiritual energy here was a lower grade than what she had known before she died.
It had only been a year since she regained consciousness and found that, for some unknown reason, she had been absorbed by the relic she had found inside a secret realm, and it had somehow fallen to the Lower Realm. She also felt guilty at absorbing this girl's cultivation while she was just trying to understand where she actually was, and in the process her soul — which was too strong spiritually — made the spiritual energy in the girl's Dantian inexplicably get absorbed into the locket and then awakened her from her long slumber.
"I have already decided to make this girl stand at the pinnacle of this world, at least as compensation." She spoke to herself since no one could hear her voice inside the locket.
"Hoo... how long will you lie to yourself?" She said, knowing inwardly that it was actually because she no longer trusted men. After the love of her life had betrayed her for power and inferiority complex — since she was stronger than him — she also knew that her father should have already killed that man if he had known what he had done to his precious jewel.
She couldn't help but smirk thinking about the outcome of her ex-husband; however, she really wished he was alive and well — only then would she be able to get her revenge.
