Chapter 23: Fu Yan was put in the friend zone!
In the cafeteria, Fu Yan raised a question.
" What if I am interested in Hirvan?"
Hirvan raised his head and looked at Fu Yan like he was crazy.
"Be serious. I know when someone looks at me with infatuated eyes. You, on the other hand, are not in that category."
Hirvan shook his head in disappointment.
"Now, I can see your resemblance to your cousin. Both are fond of deception."
Fu Yan was taken aback by Hirvan's proficient observation skills. Contrary to his righteous police officer father, Fu Yan was more like a shrewd politician. Not many people could see through his act.
"Anyway, you are here either to sleep with me, or you have a bet with your friends about how easily you can charm me. Tsk… I had high expectations of your character based on your academic performance. Well, go on… I have my kind friends here, no need for you," Hirvan's eyes went cold as he spoke to Fu Yan.
Mara and Hannah had not seen this side of Hirvan before and were paralyzed by the coldness emitted by him. Fu Yan felt more and more intrigued by this boy. His aura was on par with his father.
Other students sitting near them were so intent on eavesdropping that they were spilling food and drinks without realizing it. They were all thinking, 'So much drama!'
'He is always capable of producing top-notch gossip!'
Fu Yan glanced at his surroundings and decided not to make a scene. Sometimes, retreating was a better decision than pushing through.
"Okay. I'll talk to you later," Fu Yan said, leaving the cafeteria.
Mara whispered in Hannah's ear, "That was scary. I thought I was sitting across from my father. You know, he is a judge and has a scary aura."
Hannah nodded, studying Hirvan. She was also shocked by his abrupt change.
Hirvan was annoyed at himself for losing his temper with a teenager. 'What am I doing? It's really shameful.'
He thought he had come to terms with tolerating these types of people. But the moment he saw the facade and pretence on the boy's face, all the good impressions of him vanished.
"Ah, that was a miss. He was handsome and to my taste," Hirvan said out loud.
Mara rolled her eyes and grabbed Hirvan's collar. "Are you toying with us? Who said his chasing boyfriend had come to an end? Did you send him away to test his sincerity?"
"No! I meant if we became friends, it would be great. I wouldn't hit on an underage! What do you take me for?"
"Underage? You both are adults! He is also eighteen!"
Hirvan realized that he had made an error and thought, 'Oops! Slip of the tongue! In terms of mental maturity, I am twice his age! Even if he were the last man on the planet, I would never sleep with him!'
Hirvan didn't know that with his words, he had raised a red flag for himself!
"Okay, okay. Let me go! Why do we have this argument? The boy has left!"
"Ah, you are such a frustrating person," Mara said, huffing in anger and letting the matter slide.
The rest of the day went smoothly, and as the final bell rang, Fu Yan stood beside his desk. Hirvan noticed him and sighed. He wasn't in the mood for another confrontation.
"Hey, Hirvan," Fu Yan called out, walking over.
"Yes?" Hirvan replied, trying to keep his tone neutral.
"I wanted to apologize for earlier. I didn't mean to come off as insincere or to upset you," Fu Yan said, his expression genuine.
Hirvan studied him for a moment, then nodded. "Apology accepted. Just... be honest with your intentions next time."
Hirvan was aware of how challenging it was for a hot-headed teenager to acknowledge his mistake and bow his head to apologize. His two sons were proud and getting one apology from them was like squeezing water from a stone. So, his impression of the boy improved and he felt he could give him a second chance.
"Of course. Can we start over?" Fu Yan extended his hand.
"Sure," Hirvan said, shaking it.
As they walked out of the school, Mara and Hannah followed closely behind, curious about the sudden change in dynamics. "So, are you friends now or a couple?" Mara asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Neither! We are just acquainted."
Hirvan replied with a stern voice.
Hannah nodded, still observing Fu Yan. "Let's see how this goes."
Fu Yan had a bitter smile on his face, thinking if his family and friends knew his situation they would have a good laugh at him and would be delighted to see his humble appearance.
' Have I lost my attractiveness? Can anyone explain why the well-known playboy at school doesn't want to be friends with me, much less hit on me? I thought getting close to him was an effortless task!'
Fu Yan sighed in depression.
' It's okay. It's because of this important investigation that I am enduring his heartless behaviour. Once my suspicion has been cleared or proven to be incorrect, I would give him the cold shoulder and show him who is the boss!'
Fu Yan was unsure of why Hirvan's dismissal behaviour had made him feel uncomfortable.
"As an excuse to help him study, let's closely observe him these days."
Over the next few days, Hirvan, Mara, Hannah, and Fu Yan started spending more time together. Their study sessions became more productive, and they began to understand each other's strengths and weaknesses. Fu Yan's analytical mind and strategic thinking helped Hirvan grasp complex subjects more easily. Meanwhile, Mara's enthusiasm and Hannah's patience made the study sessions enjoyable.
The next week arrived quickly, and with it, the dreaded quiz. Hirvan felt a mix of nerves and excitement as he sat in his seat. The classroom buzzed with the anxious energy of students preparing for the test. The walls, adorned with motivational posters and student artwork, seemed to close in as the teacher began handing out the quiz papers.
"Remember, you've all worked hard. Just do your best," the teacher said, offering a reassuring smile.
Hirvan took a deep breath and focused on the paper in front of him. The questions were challenging, and he found that his intense study sessions had not paid off.
Well, he did not have high expectations for this test. One week was not enough to memorise this gigantic study material and catch up with other students.
Time flew by, and soon the teacher called for them to put their pens down. Hirvan felt a rush of relief. He had done his best, and now it was out of his hands.
After the quiz, the group gathered outside. The sun was shining brightly, and there was a sense of accomplishment in the air.
"How do you think you did?" Mara asked, a hopeful look in her eyes.
"I think it was awful," Hirvan replied. "Even though all of you had spent time to tutor me, I could not still answer many questions."
" That was predictable. Don't be hard on yourself. Moving forward with these small steps still is better than doing nothing."
Fu Yan said, trying to console Hirvan.
Fu Yan's words carried a surprising amount of sincerity, and Hirvan couldn't help but feel a small glimmer of hope. "Thanks," Hirvan said, offering a weak smile. "It's just frustrating, you know?"
"Trust the process," Hannah added, patting Hirvan's shoulder. "We'll keep at it, and you'll see improvement soon enough."
