Chapter 28: The Hidden City
Emerging from the Shadows
Ethan moved forward with his Ten Generals, stepping out from the dense forest that had hidden their safehouse. The early morning light was just beginning to seep through the thick canopy above, casting long shadows on the forest floor. They had walked for hours in near silence, the weight of their mission ahead pressing heavily on them. Finally, they reached a narrow, winding road that cut through the wilderness.
Ethan's eyes widened as they emerged onto the road. There, lined up in perfect rows, were countless luxury cars—each one identical, sleek, and black, with an otherworldly sheen. Surrounding the vehicles were thousands of soldiers, all standing in perfect formation. The sight was imposing, a silent demonstration of the strength and discipline of the Tenth Family.
As Ethan approached one of the cars, he felt compelled to touch it. His fingers brushed against the surface, expecting to feel the cold, smooth metal of a typical car. Instead, the material was unlike anything he had ever touched—cool, but with a strange texture that seemed to shift under his fingertips, as if it were alive.
One of the Generals noticed his curiosity and stepped closer. "It's Crimsonite," the General said, nodding toward the car. "A metal unique to our family. It has properties that no other material on Earth possesses."
Ethan raised an eyebrow, intrigued. “Crimsonite?” he repeated, letting the word roll off his tongue. “What makes it so special?”
The General gave a faint smile, his eyes holding a hint of mystery. “That’s a story for another time, Ethan. Let’s just say it’s one of the many secrets of the Tenth Family, one that has taken centuries to perfect.”
Ethan looked back at the cars, a sense of awe settling over him. The mystery of Crimsonite was just one more piece in the vast, unknown puzzle of his heritage. He realized there was so much he still didn’t know about his own family’s capabilities, their knowledge and resources far exceeding what he had imagined.
Into the Future
As they moved toward their assigned car, Ethan couldn’t help but feel a mixture of excitement and anxiety. When he stepped inside, his eyes widened once more. The interior was unlike any car he’d ever seen. The seats were crafted from a material that looked like leather but felt smoother and more comfortable. The dashboard wasn’t filled with the usual dials and switches; instead, it was a sleek digital interface that glowed softly, displaying information in a language he didn’t recognize.
“Impressive, isn’t it?” one of the Generals said with a knowing smile. “All of this is the work of the Tenth Family’s scientists and researchers. Our technology is far beyond anything humans have developed. With lifespans that stretch centuries and minds that never forget, our scientists have had the time and opportunity to learn, innovate, and perfect.”
Ethan nodded, still absorbing everything around him. "I never imagined... this level of advancement. It's like something out of a science fiction novel."
The General chuckled. "Well, humans are limited by their short lifespans. Their greatest minds only have a few decades to make discoveries. But we... we have centuries. We've seen empires rise and fall. We’ve learned from the mistakes of others and from our own. That’s the advantage of time."
As the car sped forward, Ethan felt a strange sensation—a force pushing him back into his seat. He looked out the window and was astonished to see the trees rushing by at a speed far beyond anything he’d ever experienced in a human vehicle. The landscape blurred as they flew down the road, and within moments, they were kilometers away from their starting point.
He turned back to the General, his face filled with wonder. "How fast are we going?"
"Faster than anything on human roads," the General replied with a grin. "These vehicles are built for efficiency, speed, and stealth. They can cross vast distances in a fraction of the time it would take a human to travel."
Ethan shook his head in disbelief, slowly getting used to these surprises. As he settled back into his seat, his thoughts drifted back to Lila and Amelia. He could still feel their touch, hear their voices. He didn’t know when he’d see them again or if he ever would, but he had to stay focused. He had made his decision, and now he had to see it through.
Approaching the Hidden City
Six hours passed like a blur, and before Ethan knew it, the cars began to slow. As they pulled up, he saw a vast forest unlike any other. The trees were ancient and enormous, their trunks twisted and gnarled. A thick mist hung low over the ground, curling around the roots and creating an eerie, otherworldly atmosphere. Ethan could feel an immense power radiating from the forest—an energy that was alive, pulsing like a heartbeat.
The cars began to move forward, parting through the mist. As they entered the forest, Ethan noticed strange creatures lurking in the shadows. They were unlike any animals he had seen in the human world—massive, with glowing eyes and unnatural forms that seemed to blend with the trees and underbrush. He could sense their strength and danger just by looking at them.
He turned to one of the Generals, curiosity evident in his eyes. “What are those creatures? They’re not like any animals I’ve seen.”
The General nodded, his expression serious. “They’re engineered beings. Made by one of our scientists who specializes in genetic and biological research. These creatures are designed to protect the city and its inhabitants from any intruders. And from what we know, there’s only one scientist who focuses on such work—a female vampire.”
Ethan’s interest was piqued. “Who is she?”
The General shrugged. “No one knows much about her. She rarely leaves her lab, and the Tenth Palace keeps her work highly classified. What you see here is just a glimpse of what she’s capable of creating.”
Ethan nodded, staring out at the forest, his mind buzzing with questions. The Tenth Palace clearly had its secrets, and he was just beginning to scratch the surface. This city, this family—it was far more complex and mysterious than he had ever imagined.
The Hidden City Revealed
As they continued deeper into the forest, a massive wall began to rise in the distance, towering over the trees. It stretched as far as the eye could see, encircling something enormous. The wall was made of the same strange metal as the cars, glinting in the light. As they drew closer, Ethan saw a gate embedded in the wall, guarded by even more soldiers who stood at attention, ready to defend their home.
When the gates opened, Ethan’s breath caught in his throat. Beyond the wall was a city unlike anything he had ever imagined. It wasn’t the ancient, isolated palace he had expected. Instead, it was a sprawling metropolis, larger than any human city he had seen.
The city stretched across nearly 15,000 square kilometers, a vast landscape that combined the height of modern technology with the untouched beauty of nature. Towering skyscrapers, crafted from the same strange metal as the cars, pierced the sky, their surfaces reflecting the sunlight in a dazzling array of colors. Yet, in between these marvels of architecture were vast parks, rivers, and groves of trees that gave the city an almost surreal balance between advancement and nature.
Children played in the streets, their laughter filling the air. Young vampires moved in groups, chatting and enjoying the vibrant marketplace filled with shops, stalls, and malls. There were schools, libraries, and even entertainment centers—all blending the most advanced technology with the natural world.
Ethan stared, wide-eyed, unable to believe what he was seeing. “This… this is incredible,” he whispered. “How did you manage to hide all of this from the human world?”
One of the Generals, sensing his awe, replied, “This city has been in the making for over a thousand years, Ethan. The Tenth Family has always believed in combining our natural strength with technological advancement. We’ve built this city with the sole purpose of protecting our people and advancing our knowledge without interference.”
“But… to keep all this hidden?” Ethan pressed, his voice filled with disbelief.
The General nodded. “We’ve developed technology to cloak the city, to mask its presence from human satellites and surveillance. We also control the surrounding area, ensuring that no human ever gets close enough to see what lies within.”
Ethan’s mind raced as he took it all in. He had known his family was powerful, but this… this was beyond anything he had imagined. “And the forest… those creatures… they’re all part of this protection?”
The General nodded again. “Precisely. Everything here serves a purpose. The city is alive, in more ways than one.”
The Heart of the City: The Tenth Palace
As the cars moved deeper into the city, Ethan’s eyes were drawn to the center, where a massive structure loomed above all else—the Tenth Palace. It was unlike anything he had ever seen, even within this fantastical city. It stood tall and proud, with soaring towers and intricate designs that seemed to shift and shimmer with every angle. Its walls were made of a material that looked like white marble but reflected colors like a prism, and the palace seemed to glow with an inner light.
The closer they got, the more Ethan could see the palace's beauty. Gardens surrounded it, filled with flowers and plants from all over the world, some of which he had never seen before. Water flowed through canals and fountains, creating a soothing, melodic sound that seemed to calm the soul.
It was, without a doubt, the most beautiful palace he had ever seen. And it was at the very heart of this hidden city—a symbol of power, heritage, and mystery.
The car came to a stop at the foot of the palace’s grand entrance, and Ethan stepped out, still in awe. “It’s… magnificent,” he whispered, his eyes wide as he took in the sight.
A General stepped beside him. “The Tenth Palace has stood for centuries, Ethan. It’s the core of our power, our legacy. And now, it’s time for you to take your place within it.”
Ethan nodded, his heart pounding with a mix of excitement and trepidation. He knew this was only the beginning. The palace, the city, the secrets—there was so much more to learn, to understand. And he was still young, still so new to all of this. But he was ready to step forward, to embrace his destiny as the future leader of the Tenth Family.
A New Reality
As Ethan stood before the gates of the Tenth Palace, he felt the weight of his role settle more heavily on his shoulders. This city, this incredible hidden world, was now his responsibility. The legacy of his ancestors, the future of his people—it all rested on him.
And as he gazed up at the palace, knowing that his journey was only just beginning, he couldn’t help but feel a mix of fear and hope. The road ahead would not be easy, but for the sake of everyone who believed in him, for Lila and Amelia, and for the future he wanted to build, he would face whatever challenges came his way.
With a deep breath, Ethan stepped forward, ready to enter the heart of his family's legacy and uncover the mysteries that lay within.
