Chapter 5: Path of Crimson Shadows
The forest seemed to close in tighter around Selene and Lucian as they left the monastery behind, the crimson glow of the blood moon filtering through the dense canopy. The knowledge of their shared heritage weighed heavily on Selene's mind. She glanced at Lucian, his sharp features unreadable in the dim light.
"How long have you known?" she asked, breaking the silence.
Lucian didn't look at her. "Known what?"
"About our bloodlines," Selene said, her voice sharper than she intended. "About us being descendants of... them."
Lucian finally met her gaze, his eyes gleaming faintly in the moonlight. "I didn't know until the Keeper told us. But it makes sense, doesn't it? Why else would the hybrids target us? Why else would the blood moon lead us together?"
Selene didn't respond. She hated the idea that her destiny had been written for her, that she was nothing more than a pawn in a centuries-old game.
"Does it matter?" Lucian asked, his tone softer.
Selene blinked. "What?"
"Does it matter where we come from?" Lucian said, stepping closer. "What matters is what we do now. Do we break the covenant or let it consume us?"
Selene's jaw tightened. "I'm not the type to let anything consume me."
Lucian's lips quirked into a faint smile. "Good. Then we're on the same page."

The Marked Path
The Keeper's cryptic instructions led them deeper into the forest, following trails that seemed to twist and shift as though the forest itself were alive. The silence was oppressive, broken only by the occasional rustle of leaves or the distant cry of an animal.
"Do you think the hybrids will come after us again?" Selene asked, scanning the shadows.
"They're too stupid to act on their own," Lucian replied. "But whoever's controlling them won't stop until we're dead."
Selene frowned. "And who do you think that is?"
Lucian hesitated. "The Keeper said the covenant was forged by traitors from both our kinds. If their descendants still exist, they might be trying to protect the covenant."
Selene's claws flexed involuntarily. "Or use it for their own gain."
Lucian nodded. "Exactly."
As they walked, the air grew colder, and the trees became more twisted, their branches reaching out like skeletal fingers. Selene's wolf senses prickled with unease.
"We're getting close," she said.
Lucian stopped, his eyes narrowing. "Do you feel that?"
Selene nodded. The air was heavy with magic, a dark and pulsing energy that made her skin crawl.
Ahead of them, the path ended at a wide clearing. At the center stood a massive stone altar, its surface carved with intricate runes that glowed faintly in the moonlight.
"This must be it," Lucian said, his voice low.
Selene stepped forward, her heart pounding. The altar radiated power, and she could feel it pulling at her, calling to her blood.

The First Test
As they approached, the ground trembled, and the air filled with a low, resonant hum. Shadows coalesced around the altar, taking on the forms of wolves and bats, their eyes glowing with the same malevolent red as the hybrids.
"Of course it couldn't be easy," Selene muttered, baring her claws.
Lucian drew his blade, his movements calm but deliberate. "You ready for this?"
"Always," Selene said, stepping into a defensive stance.
The shadow creatures attacked without warning, their movements fluid and unnatural. Selene slashed at the nearest one, her claws cutting through its smoky form. The creature dissipated with a hiss, but two more took its place.
Lucian fought beside her, his blade flashing as he dispatched the shadows with precision. But no matter how many they destroyed, more kept coming.
"They're endless!" Selene growled, dodging a swipe from one of the creatures.
Lucian's eyes flicked to the altar. "The runes—look at the runes!"
Selene glanced at the altar, noticing that the runes were glowing brighter with each shadow they defeated.
"They're feeding off the fight," Lucian said. "We have to stop this another way."
"Got any bright ideas?" Selene snapped, slashing at another shadow.
Lucian hesitated, his gaze fixed on the altar. "The Keeper said only their descendants could break the covenant. I think it's calling to us—to our blood."
Selene's stomach twisted. "You're saying we have to go to the altar?"
Lucian nodded. "It's the only way."

A Blood Offering
Fighting their way through the shadow creatures, Selene and Lucian reached the altar. The air around it crackled with energy, and the runes pulsed like a heartbeat.
"What now?" Selene asked, her claws still extended as she watched the creatures circling them.
Lucian hesitated before stepping forward and placing his hand on the altar. The runes flared brighter, and the shadows paused, their movements stilled as though waiting for something.
Selene followed his lead, pressing her palm to the cold stone. The moment her skin made contact, a surge of energy shot through her, and her vision blurred.
She saw flashes of the past—the betrayal, the bloodshed, and the forging of the covenant. She saw the faces of the original Alpha and vampire lord, their expressions etched with pain and regret.
When the vision ended, Selene found herself back in the present, her breath coming in ragged gasps.
"The altar needs blood," Lucian said, his voice strained. "Ours."
Selene hesitated. "How do you know?"
"I just do," Lucian said, his gaze steady. "This is what it wants."
Selene swallowed hard. She didn't trust the altar, but she trusted her instincts, and something told her Lucian was right.
Without another word, she extended her claws and slashed her palm, letting her blood drip onto the altar. Lucian did the same, his movements precise.
The moment their blood touched the stone, the runes flared with blinding light, and the shadows around them dissolved into nothingness.

The Covenant Cracks
The ground trembled as the altar absorbed their blood. A deep, resonant sound filled the air, like the tolling of a massive bell.
"The covenant is weakening," Lucian said, his voice barely audible over the noise.
Selene nodded, her eyes fixed on the altar. Cracks appeared in the stone, glowing with a fiery light. The air around them grew heavier, and Selene could feel the weight of centuries of magic unraveling.
But then, a new presence filled the clearing—a figure cloaked in darkness, its form shifting like smoke.
"You dare to defy the covenant?" the figure said, its voice cold and echoing.
Selene stepped forward, her claws extended. "We're not afraid of you."
The figure laughed, a sound that sent chills down Selene's spine. "You should be."
Lucian raised his blade. "We've come this far. We're not stopping now."
The figure's eyes glowed red. "Then you will die here, like the fools before you."
The chapter ends with the mysterious figure preparing to attack, leaving Selene and Lucian to face their greatest challenge yet.
