Blood Moon Covenant

Chapter 1: The Blood Moon Rises

The forest was unnaturally silent, a heavy stillness replacing the usual chorus of night sounds. Beneath the crimson glow of the blood moon, the world seemed cloaked in foreboding. Selene adjusted the strap of her leather bracer, her sharp eyes scanning the dense trees. The oppressive light of the moon above weighed on her shoulders, a grim reminder of the prophecy that bound her people.

She despised this night.

"The blood moon again," she murmured to herself, the words bitter on her tongue. Her heart hammered in her chest, but she refused to let her fear show. Tonight wasn't just another cycle of the cursed moon. Tonight, she had to face their ancient enemies, the vampires.

"Alpha," Marcus's deep voice broke the stillness behind her. He emerged from the shadows, his towering figure both a comfort and a reminder of the responsibility she bore.

Selene turned to him, her expression firm. "What is it, Marcus?"

"Are you sure about this?" His tone was low but tense. "Meeting a vampire at the altar… it's reckless. The pack is uneasy."

Selene's jaw tightened. She knew what this meant to her pack—how much it would test their trust in her leadership. "It's not reckless. It's our duty. The covenant demands our presence. If we ignore it, we risk war."

"And if this meeting is a trap?" Marcus asked, his golden eyes narrowing.

Selene straightened, her claws flexing instinctively. "Then I'll face it head-on. Alone, if I must."

Her resolve left no room for argument, though Marcus's expression remained troubled. He let out a low growl but said nothing more. Selene nodded curtly and began walking toward the clearing.

---

The ancient altar stood at the heart of the forest, shrouded in an unnatural stillness. As Selene approached, her stomach churned at the sight. The stone slab, etched with runes glowing faintly in the blood moon's light, seemed to pulse like a living thing.

She slowed her steps, the weight of history pressing down on her. The altar was a symbol of the uneasy truce between her kind and the vampires. Centuries ago, their ancestors had forged a covenant here to prevent mutual destruction. But over time, the truth of that pact had been lost, leaving only the rituals and the unspoken tension.

Selene's ears twitched at the faint rustle of movement. A figure stepped out from the shadows, his presence unsettlingly graceful.

Lucian.

The vampire prince approached with the kind of confidence that set Selene's teeth on edge. His silver hair caught the eerie light of the moon, and his piercing eyes locked onto hers with an intensity that made her bristle.

"Punctual as ever," Lucian remarked, his voice smooth as silk. His lips curved into a faint smirk, revealing the tips of his fangs.

Selene clenched her fists, suppressing the urge to snarl. "Let's skip the pleasantries, vampire. I'm here because I have to be, not because I want to."

Lucian chuckled, the sound both infuriating and strangely disarming. "Charming, as always. Shall we proceed, then?"

With a curt nod, Selene stepped forward, standing opposite him at the altar. The runes between them began to glow brighter, their hum growing louder.

---

The air grew heavy, charged with an energy that made Selene's fur bristle. Even Lucian's confident demeanor faltered, his smirk replaced by a wary frown.

"Something's wrong," Lucian murmured, his sharp gaze fixed on the altar.

Selene barely had time to respond before the runes flared with blinding light. A deafening roar filled the clearing, and she staggered back as a force like a gust of wind knocked her off balance.

A ghostly figure materialized above the altar, its form shifting and ethereal. Its glowing eyes burned like twin stars, and its voice, deep and resonant, echoed across the clearing.

"The covenant must be broken."

Selene's heart pounded as she stepped forward, her claws extended. "Who are you? What does this mean?"

The figure ignored her, turning its gaze to Lucian. "Your kind and hers are bound by blood and betrayal. The truth lies buried, but the blood moon will reveal all."

Lucian's usual calm shattered. "What truth?" he demanded, his voice sharp.

The figure's form began to flicker, its voice fading into a chilling whisper. "The covenant was a lie."

With those final words, the figure dissolved, leaving only the faint hum of the altar behind.

---

Selene's claws retracted as she turned to Lucian, her breaths coming in ragged gasps. "What in the name of the ancestors was that?"

Lucian's expression was uncharacteristically ashen. He ran a hand through his silver hair, his dark eyes scanning the altar as if searching for answers. "Something we weren't prepared for. That much is clear."

Selene glared at him, anger and confusion swirling in her chest. "Don't play coy with me. If there's something you know—"

"I don't," Lucian snapped, his usual composure slipping. He took a deep breath, steadying himself. "But whatever that thing was, it wasn't lying. Something about this covenant is… wrong."

Selene's mind raced. The covenant had been their foundation for centuries, the fragile thread that kept their worlds from tearing each other apart. If it was based on a lie…

She shook her head. "No. We can't jump to conclusions. We need to figure out what this means. Together."

Lucian's eyes narrowed, his gaze calculating. "A werewolf and a vampire working together to uncover ancient truths? That's a story for the ages."

Selene rolled her eyes but didn't argue. The blood moon's glow seemed to intensify, casting long shadows around them. Whatever had awakened tonight was just the beginning, and she had a feeling it would change everything.

"We'll start by investigating the origins of the covenant," Selene said firmly. "If there's a lie at its core, we'll uncover it."

Lucian smirked faintly. "Looks like I'm stuck with you, wolf."

"For now," Selene shot back, her tone sharp.

As they turned to leave the clearing, Selene felt a strange sense of foreboding mixed with resolve. The blood moon had risen, and with it, the beginning of a journey neither she nor Lucian could have predicted.

Little did they know, forces far greater than themselves had already begun to move.
