"Arrancar? And ten Menos Grande?"
Urahara Kisuke's pupils narrowed, a flicker of surprise in his usually calm gaze. Normally, even if a Hollow slipped from Hueco Mundo into the human world, it would be a Gillian at most. Last time, when Shiraha had been training in a soul burial, an Adjuchas-class Menos Grande had appeared in Karakura Town. That alone had been alarming. But now—Arrancar, and in such numbers—this was something far worse.
It reeked of manipulation. Someone was releasing Arrancar into the world deliberately. Kisuke could think of only one person with the means and motive: Aizen SĹŤsuke.
Arrancar… Espada… Shiraha's thoughts hardened. Eight chances out of ten this was Aizen again, setting a stage to kill her outright. With Shiraha stationed as the Shinigami garrison in the human world, a coordinated assault of Menos Grande and Arrancar would force her into battle. If she fell, Yamamoto Genryūsai might suspect foul play, but it would still be dismissed as an unlucky end.
But Aizen… you've misjudged me. A faint, almost amused curve touched her lips. Since arriving in the world of the living, her power had surged—she now stood on equal footing with high-ranking captains like Kuchiki Byakuya. And beyond that, she possessed the limitless incantation technique: Mantra – Power of Stop. Even if all the Espada came at once, they would not be able to cut her down.
"Shiraha," Kisuke said with a faint apology, "since Yoruichi, Tessai, and I cannot reveal ourselves, you'll have to go alone this time."
The three of them were still exiles, always in danger of being exposed if they acted openly. And with Aizen's eyes searching for them, they could not afford the risk.
Shiraha waved it off. "It's fine, Mr. Urahara. Eliminating Menos Grande in this world is my duty."
Kisuke's expression grew serious. "I think you may not understand what an Arrancar is."
Only Kisuke, Tessai, Yoruichi, and Aizen knew the full truth. Even most captains in the Gotei 13 only recognized the base Menos hierarchy—Gillian, Adjuchas, Vasto Lorde. The nature of Arrancar was a different matter.
"An Arrancar," Kisuke began, "is a Hollow that has broken its limits. Its mask is shattered, its body becomes human in form, and it gains powers similar to a Shinigami. Their skin is like steel—Zanpakutō can barely pierce it. Every Arrancar I've studied evolved from an Adjuchas. Their strength rivals upper-class Menos and Vasto Lorde."
He did not explain how he had studied them, nor mention the HĹŤgyoku. Shiraha already knew, but let it pass with a polite nod.
At that moment, a device on her person began to blink. Before she had come to the human world, the Twelfth Division's Technology Development Bureau had given it to her—an urgent contact tool for missions. She pressed the red switch, and a man's voice, taut with urgency, filled her ear.
"Captain Shiraha, ten Gillian-class Menos Grande have appeared in Naruki City. Also—one suspected Vasto Lorde-class Hollow. Please deploy immediately. All other captains are engaged suppressing a riot in the underground prison's first to third floors. When the suppression ends, Captain Zaraki and the commander will come to assist. Until then, you're on your own."
"I understand. I'm moving now," Shiraha replied, cutting the channel.
She looked at Kisuke, a thin smile on her lips. "Coincidence? The moment Arrancar appear here, the underground prison riots in Seireitei? Please. This has Aizen's hand all over it."
Kisuke frowned. "Perhaps. Be careful." His own suspicion mirrored hers almost exactly.
"I'll be back when it's done," she said, and with a burst of Shunpo, vanished. Kisuke stood alone for a long moment, thoughts furrowing his brow.
"Boom!"
A tawny blur landed in front of him—Yoruichi, in her black cat form, springing into the air to smack her paw against his head. "Oi, Kisuke. Tessai says there are ten Menos and an Arrancar in Naruki City. Where's Shiraha?"
"Ah! Pain, pain!" Kisuke yelped, rubbing the growing lump on his skull. "She's already on her way."
Yoruichi's eyes narrowed. "You don't actually think she can handle an Arrancar alone, do you?"
Kisuke's smile returned, faint but telling. "Yoruichi-chan… Shiraha's Shikai is not as simple as you think."
He glanced toward the direction she had gone, an unreadable glint in his eyes.
---
Naruki City—the neighboring district to Karakura Town.
A black garganta split the sky, yawning wide. Ten Gillian-class Menos, towering forty to fifty meters tall, stepped through, their heavy forms shaking the ground. The city trembled as if in an earthquake. Panicked civilians, unable to see the monsters, scattered in confusion.
From the garganta's depths, three more figures emerged. The black maw closed behind them.
"Tch. So this is the real world? Spiritual pressure here is pathetic."
The speaker had light blue, jagged hair, icy blue eyes, and a few unruly bangs falling across his forehead. On his right cheek, remnants of a serrated Hollow mask clung like a predator's grin. A black 6 tattoo marked the lower right of his back, and the Hollow hole pierced his abdomen. Hands shoved into his pockets, he spat his disdain into the empty air.
This was Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez—Espada Sexta.
