Black Clover: The Chaos Legacy

Chapter 8: Chapter 8: First Battle

I headed to the nearest group, my grimoire floating beside me. I looked at them and said, "Hey, this is private property. I'm asking you all to leave." Hearing this, the mages were startled and turned to face me, looking at me warily. One of them, clearly the squad leader, taunted, "Oh, it's just a kid. Get rid of him." With that, the group summoned their grimoires, preparing to attack.

I smirked. "I guess that's a no then. Alright, I'll personally send you all on your way."

I took a step forward, my grimoire already floating beside me. In an instant, it transformed into a katana, its black blade gleaming with chaotic energy. [Chaos Magic: Chaos Rend], I said in my mind. In the next instant, mana surged through the weapon as I swung it effortlessly, the edge cutting through the air with precision, releasing a wave of Chaos Magic that flew forward, finishing off every enemy in its path.

The assassins froze for a moment, stunned by the sheer power, but they charged at me regardless. One of them lunged forward, casting a burst of flame, but I simply moved my katana and sliced through the fire like it was nothing. Without missing a beat, I used [Chaos Magic: Chaos Shield], which enveloped me, deflecting the barrage of attacks that followed with ease.

The assassins' movements grew frantic as I effortlessly dodged their strikes, each one missing me by a wide margin. My katana moved like an extension of my arm, cutting through the enemies with ease. Chaos Magic surged faintly through its edge as each precise strike landed true. The results of my training seamlessly adjusted to real combat as I fought. Their magic flared around me, but it felt like nothing more than a passing breeze. Honestly… it was almost too easy.

'This is too simple,' I thought to myself as I slashed through another opponent.

Luna's playful voice echoed in my mind. "Master, are you sure you don't miss a real challenge? This is starting to look like you're just harvesting wheat."

I chuckled at her teasing remark, my katana cutting through another mage's spell with ease as I continued my assault.

One by one, the mages fell, their grimoires fading into nothingness as the ground became stained with blood. It was effortless. I paused for a moment, flicking my katana to the side to splatter the blood off its blade, leaving it clean once more. My golden eyes swept over the fallen mages, and for a brief moment, a pang of doubt stirred in my chest. 'Is this what it's like for the strong? No real challenge, just... easy victories?'

Sensing my thoughts, Luna's soothing voice echoed in my mind. "It's not like that, Master. They were simply too weak to give you a proper challenge."

I couldn't help but laugh, shaking my head. "Yeah, I guess you're right."

With the last of the mages taken care of, I turned and started walking toward the house. Just as I did, I met up with Asta, who was just finishing his own side of the battle. He grinned when he saw me. "You're done already?"

"Yeah, harvest is over," I said with a smirk, my katana returning to its grimoire form.

Asta laughed, then we both rushed into the house together.

As we entered the house, we rushed straight toward Fanzell's room. Without hesitation, Asta swung his sword, shattering the door in one powerful strike. My grimoire floated beside me, and I conjured several bolts of chaos, ready to fire as I followed him in.

"You okay, old guy(Teach)?" we both asked in unison, our eyes scanning the room.

Asta pointed his sword at Mariella, his expression sharp. "And what the hell, Mariella? I thought you were grateful for everything he did for you!"

Mariella stood there, her crystal dagger dripping with blood as she held it in front of her. The blood gleamed darkly under the light, and her gaze remained steady, despite the accusation. "It's true that I survived because of the techniques he taught me," she admitted, her voice unflinching. "I still respect him greatly."

I narrowed my eyes, the bolts I'd conjured now aimed at the assassins and her. "So, this is how you show respect? By stabbing him in the back?" My voice carried a cold edge. I knew Mariella had her reasons, and I even knew she'd eventually stand by Fanzell's side, but as his student, I couldn't let this betrayal slide.

Asta tightened his grip on his sword and added, "Yeah! If you really respected him, why would you do this?"

Mariella's face hardened as she replied, "Because if that was all I was worried about, I wouldn't be able to do my job." She pointed the dagger she'd stabbed into Fanzell toward us, her posture resolute. At her signal, the other assassins readied themselves, their grimoires glowing faintly. "So, if you could, please stay out of our way. After all, you wouldn't want to die for some old man you barely know, would you?"

Asta's shout cut through the tension. "Oh, we know him pretty well now!"

Fanzell, kneeling on the floor with his hands restrained by an assassin, lifted his head weakly. "No, Asta, Ryo," he said, his voice strained. "Mariella is right. You two should run. You promised me that whatever I taught you would only be used for your dreams. It would be wrong to use it to save an old guy you don't really know. So, go. Hurry and—"

"Shut up, Teach." My voice was calm but firm as I cut him off. "Didn't Asta just say we already know you? Besides, I'm not breaking my promise. I asked you to teach me so I could protect those close to me. That's exactly what I'm doing now."

Before anyone could react, I fired the chaos bolts. They struck the assassins surrounding Mariella with unerring precision. The bolts pierced their bodies, and with explosive force, they shattered into dust, their grimoires vanishing along with them. Mariella, however, was a different matter. I deliberately fired a small, uncharged bolt at her. As it neared her, I willed it to explode, sending her flying backward with a force that knocked her against the wall. The shock of the blast disoriented her, and the chaotic mana disrupted her mana flow, rendering her unable to cast magic temporarily.

The man holding Fanzell down stumbled back, startled by the sudden attack. His grip loosened, and Fanzell slumped forward, gasping for breath. Asta wasted no time—he lunged forward with a roar, his sword cutting through the air in a powerful arc. The assassin barely had time to react before Asta's blade cleaved through him, ending the fight in an instant

Seeing this, Fanzell's voice cracked as he spoke, "Asta, Ryo, why? I already lost my will to live. There's no reason. Just leave me alone. I'm tired of all this."

Asta, his frustration palpable, shouted back, "What the hell are you saying? Will to live? Reason to live? Of course, no one will have that automatically. You're supposed to find that yourself!"

I stepped forward, my tone unwavering. "If you understand that, then get up and fight. We got company." My mana sense had already picked up on more incoming enemies.

Not long after, several mages began to appear—some entered through the windows, while others broke through the roof. I cursed under my breath, "Damn it. These bastards ruined the house."

Luna's voice echoed in my mind, her tone playful despite the chaos. "It's okay, Master. We can just build another house later."

Just as we prepared for the new wave of enemies, a massive gust of wind suddenly swept through the room, startling us. We heard Fanzell's voice a moment later, "[Wind Creation Magic: Emperor of Slashing Winds - Winter Wind]!"

Wind blades shot out in every direction, slicing through the enemies and even tearing the roof off the house. Fanzell, his face serious yet resolute, explained, "That spell sends lots of slashes flying out at once. I call it the Flying One."

Asta's eyes widened in admiration. "What an awesome name!"

I couldn't help but laugh and shake my head. Fanzell then added, "Sorry about that pathetic display, but I'm alright now."

More assassins appeared, surrounding us as we braced for the fight ahead. But then, to my surprise, Mariella—struggling to her feet—announced, "We are retreating. Carry their bodies."

I smirked and stepped forward. "Oh, not just yet."

[Chaos Magic: Entropy Field] I said in my mind, after which a pulse of Chaos Magic spread from me. Soon, a massive, chaotic zone of mana expanded outward, covering the entire house and the area surrounding it. The assassins, including Mariella, knelt in agony, spitting blood due to the immense mana backlash from my spell.

Asta and Fanzell stood frozen, staring in disbelief. Asta muttered, "My physical strength is recovering so quickly."

Fanzell, equally stunned, exclaimed, "My spells, my mana... It's recovering so fast."

I walked over to Mariella, still on the ground, and grabbed her grimoire. "You know," I said, voice low, "according to my character, you'd already be dead. But who made you my senior sister? So, I'll exempt you from death this time."

Mariella's eyes widened in confusion, but I continued, "But a living penalty is a must, so…"

I opened her grimoire, ignoring the shocked gasps of everyone. In this world, only the chosen of a grimoire could open it, but I defied all their expectations. Looking at Luna, I asked, "Can you give me a hand?"

Luna nodded excitedly, and together we worked in sync. I used [Chaos Magic: Elemental Corruption] on the grimoire, and under the stunned gazes of everyone, the pages containing spells began to disintegrate slowly into colorful particles. Soon, only a grimoire with blank pages remained in my hands, which I tossed back to Mariella's side.

Following that, I didn't waste any time and summoned dozens of fully charged [Chaos Magic: Chaos Bolts] and shot them out in quick succession. With the assistance of my mana sense, each bolt flew toward the assassins in the area, piercing them with unrelenting force and shattering them into dust.

Once the last assassin had been dealt with, I released the spell, dissipating the chaotic zone and returning the area to a calm, eerie silence.

Mariella, still kneeling on the ground and clutching her empty grimoire, coughed weakly but managed to glare at us. "This… isn't over," she hissed, her voice trembling with anger. "You think you've won, but I'll come back stronger. And next time, I won't hesitate."

Fanzell stepped forward, his expression hardening. "I'm done running, Mariella. From you, from everything. I'm not going to hide or cower anymore." He clenched his fists, a fire burning in his eyes as he continued, "I know Domina is alive somewhere, and I'm going to find her. If you want to take me back, then you'd better be ready to keep up because I won't stop."

Mariella's gaze faltered for a moment, but she quickly regained her composure. "Instructor... You're a fool. You'll only get yourself and Miss Domina killed."

Before Fanzell could respond, Asta stepped in, pointing his massive sword at her with a confident grin. "If he's a fool, then he's our fool! And trust me, we're not letting anyone take him down—not you, not anyone."

I chuckled softly, watching Mariella's expression shift between frustration and hesitation. Luna, standing by my side, crossed her arms and gave Mariella a cold, disapproving look.

Mariella slowly rose to her feet, her movements shaky but deliberate. She glanced at the empty grimoire in her hand, her jaw tightening as she turned to face Fanzell one last time. "Fine. If that's the path you've chosen, then so be it. But don't think for a second that this is over."

She turned on her heel, her steps unsteady yet resolute as she walked away, disappearing into the distance.

As silence fell over the ruined house, Fanzell sighed heavily, a mix of relief and determination in his eyes. "Thanks, you two. I don't know how I'll repay you for this."

Asta waved his hand dismissively, grinning. "Don't worry about it, Teach! Just keep being awesome and find Domina already!"

I placed a hand on Fanzell's shoulder, nodding. "We've got your back. So stop doubting yourself and focus on what's important."

Luna chimed in softly, her voice warm. "You're stronger than you think, Fanzell. Don't forget that."

Fanzell gave us a small but genuine smile, a newfound determination settling over him.

After the battle, we cleaned up the bloodstains scattered around the house. Once we finished, I extended my hand, letting chaotic mana swirl around it as I cast [Chaos Magic: Time Form: Rewind]. The house seemed to shimmer for a moment before reversing the damage sustained during the fight—the broken windows repaired themselves, cracks in the walls vanished, and even the splintered roof reassembled seamlessly.

When Asta and Fanzell saw me manipulating time itself, their jaws practically hit the floor. They stared at me, wide-eyed, then looked at each other and yelled in sync, "You pervert!"

I blinked, baffled by their reaction. "What? How does fixing a house make me a pervert?"

Fanzell rubbed his temples, clearly exasperated. "Ryo, do you have to attack my worldview every single time? You're making me question reality here!"

Still laughing, I replied, "Well, Teach, breaking worldviews is kind of my specialty."

This ability was one of the many discoveries I'd made during my training—manipulating Chaos Magic in various forms like Time, Space, Flame, Lightning, and more. I'd been a little doubtful at first about how easily I could use these spells. It almost felt like cheating. When I brought it up with Luna, she explained with a knowing smile, "Using different forms of Chaos Magic is just part of what makes Chaos Magic so unique, Master. It's not because you're taking shortcuts—it's because Chaos Magic inherently thrives on versatility. Your creativity and worldview only make it easier for you to find ways to channel it."

Her words had reassured me, but it didn't change how incredible it felt to wield magic so freely. My years of absorbing anime and manga had clearly left their mark, giving me a near-instinctive ability to visualize and execute these spells. I couldn't complain—if Chaos Magic wanted me to think outside the box, I was more than ready to deliver.

Over the next month, we continued our training. Fanzell made sure to teach us everything he could before departing on his journey to search for Domina. Although Asta was a bit behind, Fanzell was reassured knowing I'd be around to help him master the techniques after he left.

On the morning of Fanzell's departure, he stood at the doorway with a determined yet bittersweet look on his face. "Thanks for everything, you two. I'll be off now. Take care of yourselves, and don't slack on your training!" He paused for a moment, then added with a small smile, "I have no doubt that both of you will become excellent Magic Knights. And Asta…" He looked directly at him, his gaze steady and sincere. "I believe you will become the Wizard King one day. You've got the heart and determination for it—don't let anyone tell you otherwise."

"Don't worry, Teach," I said with a confident grin, crossing my arms. "We'll be fine. Go find Domina and show her just how far you've come."

Asta nodded energetically, pumping a fist in the air. "Yeah! You better come back someday, so we can show you just how much stronger we've gotten! I'll prove to you I'm closer to becoming the Wizard King!"

Fanzell smiled, his confidence restored, and with that, he set out on his journey.

After seeing Fanzell off, Asta and I made our way back to the church for a quick visit. It was refreshing to see the kids and Sister Lily again, even if Asta's usual antics earned him more scolding than praise. I couldn't find Yuno anywhere, so I asked Sister Lily about him. She mentioned that he'd gone off for his own training. Hearing this, I nodded, a small smile tugging at my lips.

The following day, we returned to the cabin and threw ourselves back into training. With everything Fanzell had taught us still fresh in our minds, we pushed ourselves harder than ever. Every sparring session, every drill—it all felt like progress, like we were inching closer to our goals with each passing day.

Time flew by, and before we knew it, four months had passed. It was now the eve of the day we were set to head to the capital. After our usual training session, Asta, Luna, and I sat atop the giant demon skull, watching the sun dip below the horizon with Luna in my arms. The fading light painted the sky in brilliant shades of orange and red, a fitting backdrop for the journey ahead.

Not long after, Yuno appeared, his familiar calm demeanor as steady as ever. "I knew I'd find you guys here," he said, walking up to join us.

Hearing his voice, Asta immediately sprang to his feet, a competitive grin spreading across his face. "Yuno! You have no idea how strong I've gotten! Come on, fight me right now—I'll show you just how far ahead I am!"

Yuno raised an eyebrow, smirking faintly. "Oh? Stronger, you say? I doubt that. I've been training too, you know."

"You're looking at the future Wizard King, Yuno!" Asta declared, his fist clenched with fiery determination. "I'm gonna surpass you for sure!"

Yuno crossed his arms, his tone cool but confident. "Dream on, Asta. I'm not losing to you—or anyone else."

Their rivalry was practically palpable, their competitive spirits clashing like a storm brewing on the horizon. Before things could escalate, I decided to step in.

"Alright, that's enough, you two," I said, raising a hand between them. "Save the fighting for the capital. Besides, it'd be a shame to ruin the view with your bickering."

Asta and Yuno both shot me annoyed glances but grudgingly backed down, their competitive energy simmering just beneath the surface.

As the sun dipped lower, Asta broke the silence, his voice quieter but no less determined. "Hey, Yuno... do you remember our promise?"

Yuno looked at him, his expression softening just slightly. "Of course I do."

The two of them stood, facing each other under the vibrant hues of the setting sun. They raised their fists, meeting each other's in a gesture that spoke louder than words.

"Let's see who will become the Wizard King," they said in unison, their voices brimming with resolve.

I watched them with a small smile, Luna standing beside me, the moment marked not by rivalry, but by a shared dream.

A/N: Hope you all enjoyed this chapter. Next stop the Magic Knights Entrance Exam. Also what do you think of the punishment I gave to Mariella. I know she has her own reasons but I still felt she deserved that. But don't worry, when she returns back to Fanzell's side completely, Ryo will give those spells back after he feels she is trustworthy enough. Also I uploaded an auxiliary chapter explaining Chaos Magic and the moves Ryo currently has. Anyway see you all in the next chapter.
