Chapter 12: Chapter 12 A bargain with the fairy.
Well, couldn't it keep getting worse and worse?
Here he was, thinking that maybe—just maybe, even if it was his delusional fantasies—the prince of this universe might be different from the man in his modern world. But no, he was proven horribly wrong. And like a storm, he rose and delivered a devastating slap across Zolan's cheek, stunning him. Using the opportunity the distraction gave him, Kayden jumped out of the tub and dashed to the door. Glancing once at the glamorous room with its golden walls, he hissed—and took to his heels.
Ransacking his brain for what to do next, his mind landed on that annoying fairy godmother. He needed Lilian now more than ever, and he needed answers—especially about where Cinderella was. He could only hope the horrible death he saw was just a figment of his imagination.
Raising his fingers, the diamond-like ring on his middle finger glowed as he whispered the words taught to him by the fairy.
Reaching a dead end, he blinked. He was doomed. He was gonna be killed. And just as expected, footsteps were closing in, making his heart thunder.
Of course. The prince must have involved the guards, and now they were out looking for him—probably to drag him into the castle dungeon… or even behead him.
Oh, why was it now, of all times, that he needed that talkative fairy and she chose to abandon him?
Please help me! He began to pray solemnly, but he didn't even get the chance to finish the prayer when soft arms dragged him aside—and just like magic, they passed through a wall, leaving the castle as if they had never been there.
At a corner, a bioluminescent light began to rise, growing larger with every second until it morphed into two figures.
Kayden found himself in a strange place, but beside him—was the annoying fairy godmother. Great. What a nice escape.
Looking up, his eyes caught the enormous mass of towering walls that stretched for miles, reaching even the nearest village. And there—stood the towers of impenetrable stone, majestic and golden, shining regally in the sunlight.
Kayden knew, without a doubt, that standing before him was the Imperial Palace of the Emperor. Gosh… it was the perfect definition of paradise. Earthly paradise—for the privileged.
Swallowing the looming feeling of dread crawling up his throat, he turned to face the still figure beside him.
"So…" Kayden began, facing the beautiful woman dressed in a long flowing corset shimmering with pearls and decorated with satin bows.
Lilian held up the hem of her yellow gown—and without warning, smacked his face with her palm, her eyes twitching in anger.
"What were you doing out there?! If I hadn't been close by, you would've been killed—butchered! And I might have declared you on your own, but have you forgotten the deal you owe me?" Lilian raged.
Kayden groaned, holding his forehead. His head throbbed from the sudden slap.
Gosh, that wench. I swear I could punch her, he muttered internally, glaring at her.
"Aren't we gonna get exposed standing here talking? Or don't you care about yourself anymore?" Kayden asked, appalled by her boldness.
Lilian only shrugged—and at that moment, her eyes landed on his outfit. Her face turned sour again.
"Why are you still dressed this way, young man?" Lilian's eyes burned into him.
Kayden looked down at himself and realized he was still dressed exactly as he had been at the ball—baggy crop top, jeans that were a little loose at the edges, and those high, formidable boots. His dress was extravagant, thanks to Lilian's help. Though, truth be told, she was coerced into helping him dress this way to seduce the prince.
Unfortunately, it didn't go as planned… thanks to Cinderella ruining it all.
"That shouldn't be our concern right now. We've got bigger problems," Kayden tried to salvage the situation, but Lilian wasn't having it.
"I know this probably doesn't mean anything to you—even though you're going to die, but listen. This outfit must've caused an uproar in the palace! And not to mention you were seen running around—what do you think will happen if they find out you're not from this world?"
"Do you think the royal family is stupid or daft?! Soon the news will spread. And you better get this now—you do not want to get on the bad side of His Majesty, Emperor Gerald."
Hearing that name made Kayden's pulse spike.
Lilian began to pace. "Something big is coming, Kayden. And believe it or not, you're meant to stop it. The prince is the key—and we've got to get to him before my sister does, understood?"
Once again, she left out the important details. Like how she knew about him, who told her he was "the one," and—most importantly—who the original owner of the body was.
Something wasn't adding up, and he could feel it in his bones.
"Lilian, I get that you think I don't understand what I've gotten into, but I'm not stupid. First of all—where is Cinderella?" Kayden's sudden question threw her off.
Why the sudden switch? Was he playing games with her again?
"What kind of ridiculous question is that? Didn't we agree to keep Cinderella locked in her tower for protection while I looked after her? So what's the matter now?" Lilian snapped, clearly losing her patience.
Kayden hesitated, reminiscing. Should he tell her? Could she really be trusted? Because at this point… he was scared for his life.
"Because Lilian, at the ball… Cinderella was present. And when the clock struck midnight, she escaped—only for a stranger to push her off the castle wall. And suddenly, no one seems to be talking about it. Not to mention the youngest prince—he took me out of the scene and told me this morning he didn't see anything strange. But he was right there when the accident happened."
Kayden ruffled his hair in confusion.
"Something is wrong. Very wrong. And if you're supposed to be looking after Cinderella—then who was that maiden?" Kayden threw the question at her, clearly expecting a reply.
What he got, however, shook him to his core.
Lilian's expression turned cold. Her eyes became lifeless.
"Kayden… like I said, something sinister is going on in the palace—and within the walls of Cinderella's manor. If I'm right, dark powers have already infiltrated the palace. And right now… they're plotting something evil. Something that could destroy the whole of Eldrador—and probably every living thing."
She paused—then said it with a straight face:
"Your mission is more crucial now than ever. You must seduce and make the prince yours."
Kayden's face darkened.
So… he had to get close to that asshole. That bitch. That homophobic freak he despised.
Fine.
"Deal. I'll make my way into the palace—and into the crown prince's heart. But first, we need a grand plan. And in the meantime… why don't we go say hello to dear Cinderella? It must've been hell for her being trapped in that tower when she was supposed to get her happy ending. Wasn't it exciting watching her grovel?" Kayden laughed darkly.
Lilian frowned.
"Just kidding. Gush, you're no fun at all, old hag." Kayden groaned.
Lilian arched a brow. "What did you just say?"
But Kayden had already taken off running—and a bolt of lightning chased after him as he disappeared from view.
