Chapter 9: Chapter 9 – "Shadows in the Dark"
Victoria Island – The Call That Changes Everything
Joshua stood on his balcony, phone pressed to his ear. The city stretched before him—Lagos, restless and alive.
On the other end, the deep voice from last night spoke again.
"Are you sure you want to do this?"
Joshua's grip tightened. "Yes."
A pause. Then, a low chuckle.
"Good. Then you're ready for the next step."
The line went dead.
Joshua exhaled. No turning back now.
The Deal – Meeting the Ghost Broker
That night, Joshua entered a dimly lit bar in Ikoyi.
A man in a crisp white suit sat in the corner, sipping whiskey. His eyes, cold and calculating, locked onto Joshua.
"You must be the ambitious one," the man said, gesturing for Joshua to sit.
Joshua slid into the seat. "You're the one they call the Ghost Broker."
The man smirked. "People love to give names to things they don't understand."
Joshua placed the black envelope on the table. "I have information on Otunba. The kind that can break him."
The Broker took a sip of his drink. "And what do you want in return?"
"Power," Joshua said.
A slow smile spread across the Broker's face. "Power isn't given, my friend. It's taken."
He tapped the envelope. "This? This is just leverage. But if you're serious about stepping into the game…"
He leaned in. "You'll need to get your hands dirty."
Joshua didn't flinch. "Tell me what I need to do."
The Broker chuckled. "You really are bold. I like that."
He slid a card across the table.
"Tomorrow night. Eko Atlantic. Midnight. Be there."
Joshua picked up the card. One word was printed on it: "Initiation."
A Date with Amara – A Moment of Light
The next evening, before his midnight meeting, Joshua met Amara for dinner.
She smiled when she saw him, but there was a hint of worry in her eyes.
"You've been different lately," she said as they sat down.
Joshua hesitated. He wanted to tell her everything. But could he?
"Just a lot on my mind," he said finally.
She reached across the table, taking his hand. "Whatever it is… don't lose yourself, okay?"
For a moment, Joshua forgot about power, deals, and betrayals.
Just her.
The way she laughed, the way she looked at him.
Maybe there was still something in his life untouched by the darkness.
He wanted to keep it that way.
But deep down, he knew… it wouldn't last.
Eko Atlantic – The Initiation
At midnight, Joshua stood on the empty stretch of Eko Atlantic.
A convoy of black SUVs arrived. The doors opened.
Adisa stepped out first. Behind him, men in tailored suits, their faces unreadable.
The Broker emerged last, lighting a cigar. "Glad you showed up."
Joshua kept his stance firm. "What's next?"
The Broker gestured. A man was dragged from one of the SUVs, hands tied, mouth gagged.
Joshua's stomach tightened.
The Broker flicked his cigar. "This man betrayed Otunba. Normally, we'd deal with him ourselves. But tonight… he's your test."
A gun was tossed at Joshua's feet.
His heart pounded.
"This is what power costs," the Broker said. "Can you pay the price?"
Joshua looked at the gun. Then at the man.
The weight of the decision pressed down on him.
Step forward… or walk away.
His fingers curled into fists.
Then, he made his choice.
