Chapter 24: Chapter 24 – "Crossing the Line"
The Weight of the Decision
The city outside was quiet, but Joshua's mind wasn't. He sat in his dimly lit penthouse, staring at the message on his phone.
"24 hours."
That was all the time he had to decide.
Tunde and Adisa sat across from him, both waiting for his answer.
Tunde leaned forward. "We've done a lot of things, Joshua. But this? This is different."
Adisa exhaled. "You know once we cross this line, there's no going back."
Joshua tapped his fingers against the glass in his hand. "I know."
Amara stood near the window, arms crossed. She had been quiet, but now she spoke. "So, what are you going to do?"
Joshua didn't answer immediately.
He was never afraid of making hard choices. But this one wasn't just about business. It was about power—real power.
And whoever was testing him wasn't doing it for fun. They wanted to see if he was willing to get his hands truly dirty.
Finally, he spoke. "I need to know why they want him gone."
Tunde smirked. "I thought you'd say that."
The Target
Senator Bako.
A powerful politician with deep connections. On paper, he was clean. But in reality? He had enemies everywhere.
Joshua's team worked fast, pulling up files, bank transactions, hidden deals. And the deeper they dug, the clearer it became.
Bako was involved in something big. Not just corruption—something deeper.
Adisa scrolled through documents on his laptop. "Look at this. He's been shifting money into offshore accounts linked to private military groups."
Tunde whistled. "That's not just dirty politics. That's war money."
Joshua leaned in. "Who's he funding?"
Adisa clicked a few times. Then, his expression darkened. "A faction inside the government. They're planning something."
Silence.
Amara frowned. "So, the people testing you… they aren't just criminals. They're trying to stop him."
Joshua exhaled. "Or they just want to control the situation themselves."
Either way, it changed things.
This wasn't about power. It was about who got to hold the knife.
And if he said no, someone else would take the job.
The Setup
Joshua never rushed decisions, but this time, the clock was against him.
He had options. But none of them were clean.
Sitting in his office, he picked up his phone and dialed a number.
A low voice answered. "You've decided?"
Joshua leaned back. "I want a meeting."
A pause. Then, "Interesting. Name the place."
Joshua smirked. "Somewhere neutral."
The Meeting
An abandoned warehouse. Midnight.
Joshua arrived first, standing in the center of the empty space, hands in his pockets. Tunde and Adisa were nearby, watching the shadows.
Then, headlights cut through the darkness. A black SUV pulled up.
The man from before stepped out, along with two others.
"Joshua," the man greeted. "I wasn't expecting a conversation."
Joshua stayed calm. "I don't take jobs blindly."
The man smirked. "That's what makes you different."
Joshua got straight to the point. "Bako isn't just a problem. He's funding something dangerous. You knew that."
The man nodded. "We did."
"Then tell me this—why do you want him gone?"
The man studied him for a moment. Then he chuckled. "You ask good questions."
He gestured, and one of his men handed Joshua a file.
Joshua opened it. And what he saw made his blood run cold.
Inside were photos. Documents. Proof.
Bako wasn't just funding a faction. He was orchestrating a coup.
If he wasn't stopped, the entire balance of power in the country would shift.
Joshua closed the file.
Now he understood.
This wasn't just business. This was war.
And he had just stepped into the center of it.
