Between Your Letter and My Reply

Chapter 155

Chapter 155

『 Translator – Divinity 』

Damian, emerging from the bathroom while drying his wet hair with a towel, saw the group chatting and laughing boisterously in the yard through the window.

Lilliana was still beaming and giggling, and Eugene was looking at her with a warm gaze. Damian’s eyes narrowed.

She’s beautiful.

Damian stared at Lilliana, slightly dazed. Her smiling face was more vibrant than ever, as if she were glowing. It was truly beautiful.

At the same time, the fact that she never made that expression in front of him made Damian’s heart ache.

Perhaps Lilliana needed someone like Eugene, who cared for her wholeheartedly and with whom she could relax and have fun, more than someone boring like him.

Until two years ago, Lilliana must have been laughing brightly like that every day, surrounded by people. With a different expression than the one she showed in front of him or Casey.

Damian wanted to make Lilliana smile like that every day. He wanted to make her smile like that while looking at him.

Thanks to the long summer days, it was still bright outside even though it was evening.

Eugene put firewood in the barbecue grill in the villa’s yard, which faced the beach, and lit a fire.

Even though the flames hadn’t fully risen yet, Lilliana and Casey were already hovering nearby with skewers of sausages. Damian, who had come down in the meantime, brought more dry firewood.

“Will this be enough?”

“Ah, thank you.”

Eugene smiled and nodded, gauging the amount of firewood Damian brought. Lilliana placed the sausages on the grill and asked,

“When are the fireworks? Do they start when it gets dark?”

“Probably, right?”

Eugene checked his wristwatch and said, “We’ll probably have to wait another hour.”

“We can eat while we wait.”

“It’s been a while since I had barbecue. It looks delicious.”

As the Carnell siblings gulped, Damian silently placed the meat on the grill. Lilliana snatched the tray of meat from him.

“Damian, you’ve been running around after us all day, so why are you doing chores here? I’ll do this, so you go sit down over there. What do you want to drink?”

“Huh? No, I’m fine…”

“Brother, keep grilling this. I’ll go get some drinks with Damian.”

Lilliana handed the grilling tongs to Casey and dragged Damian to an outdoor table. She opened a bottle of soda, handed it to Damian, and asked,

“Are you having fun, Damian?”

Lilliana shook the bottle in her hand, and the liquid inside sloshed around. Damian took it and replied, “I’m not having a bad time.”

“But it feels like we’re forcing you to have fun… It makes me feel bad for bringing you along.”

“But I’m not here to have fun; I’m just here to follow you wherever you go…”

“That’s what’s wrong. That mindset.”

“What’s wrong with my mindset?”

“I’m not saying you should neglect your duties, but you should have fun when you can.”

Lilliana replied to Damian’s words with a pout.

“Eugene is my friend, but so is Damian. They’re both equally important to me.”

“Equally… you say?”

“Yes! Equally.”

“Hmm…”

Damian seemed dissatisfied with that answer and looked away. Lilliana was baffled, then amused, as she seemed to understand his feelings.

In short, he didn’t like that she put her ex-boyfriend and him on the same level.

‘How cute.’

Lilliana giggled to herself. Damian’s behavior in front of her was so obvious.

He was jealous without even knowing who she liked during the two years she lost her memories, and all of this was just so…

‘So obvious and cute.’

As Lilliana giggled, Damian, still avoiding her gaze, raised an eyebrow. Then, he suddenly took off his outer garment and handed it to her.

“I’ve told you many times to bring something light to wear, even if it’s summer, because the air gets chilly at night…”

Damian still acted as if Lilliana would wander around with her lips turning blue in the chilly March weather, wearing only her hospital gown.

Although she found it annoying, Lilliana didn’t dislike Damian looking after her.

If Lilliana didn’t have a jacket, Damian would always take off his own and give it to her. When she wore his clothes, it was as if a dry wind carrying the scent of the forest enveloped her.

Damian’s scent was a bit different from the soapy scent of others. It was uniquely him. Lilliana liked his scent. So sometimes she would deliberately leave her jacket behind.

Lilliana accepted the clothes Damian offered without hesitation and draped them over her shoulders.

The garment, much larger than Lilliana’s size, engulfed her. The warmth of Damian’s body lingered in the fabric, and she smiled, enjoying the cozy feeling.

The two sat side by side, eating the sausages Casey brought them while waiting for the next batch, when they smelled something burning.

Damian instinctively got up from his seat, seeing Casey burning the ribs and Eugene trying to salvage them. Lilliana unconsciously grabbed Damian’s wrist as he was about to leave.

Then, she was a bit flustered by her impulsive action. Damian looked back and forth between his wrist held by Lilliana and her face.

Lilliana cleared her throat and said.

“J-Just stay here. Eugene and brother will take care of it. Damian, you’ve been working all day, so let them grill the meat.”

But Damian’s face was full of distrust towards Eugene and Casey.

“If you do that, we might end up eating burnt meat.”

“Then I’ll go check on them.”

This time, as Lilliana was about to get up, Damian stopped her by putting his hand on her shoulder.

“You stay here, Lilliana.”

Since Lilliana was still holding his wrist, Damian gave up on the barbecue and sat back down next to her.

“I don’t think that guy has ever done this kind of thing either, coming from a wealthy background.”

“Then it can’t be helped. The bread is fine, so we’ll just have to eat that.”

“And the sausages.”

Damian offered Lilliana another sausage, saying he had managed to grill them properly.

While Damian was chewing on the sausage, Lilliana looked up at the sky and exclaimed.

“Look, Damian!”

Damian looked up, and the sunset spread across the horizon was truly beautiful.

Starting with a bright yellow horizon, the sky was a blend of red, purple, pink, and indigo, creating a scene straight out of a fairy tale.

The scattered clouds added to the picturesque scenery, diffusing the sunset hues and creating an almost sacred atmosphere. The ocean reflected the colors of the sky, shimmering with various shades.

It was similar to, yet different from, the sunset they had seen together in the field that day.

“It’s so beautiful…” Lilliana muttered.

Damian, who had been staring at her, suddenly spoke, “Did you have a good day today, Lilliana?”

“Of course!” Lilliana replied energetically in an excited voice.

“That’s good to hear.”

Damian moved the empty skewer to the corner of the outdoor table. Lilliana beckoned him with her finger.

“I hope you had fun too, Damian, and not just because I forced you to play with us…”

“But I’m truly fine. It’s nice to be able to see the sunset like this with you… and seeing you having fun is also enjoyable for me.”

How could he give such a dull answer? Lilliana stared at Damian, dumbfounded, as if he were a machine spitting out lines.
