Chapter 393: Double Date
"I will make your Adam repay this favour. Wait and watch."
Melanie read the message on her phone. A small smile touched her lips as she sent back an okay emoji. She let the screen go dark for a moment, holding the phone loosely in her hand.
It felt good to know she wasn't fighting all by herself anymore. At least someone was on her side again. That thought gave her a little comfort, a small weight lifted from her chest. She had told Adam everything, every part of her plan, and now it wasn't just her secret to carry. She sighed softly, feeling calmer than she had in days. She hated keeping things from her husband.
After a pause, she unlocked the phone again and opened another chat. She typed, "Any news about Marianne?"
The reply came almost at once. "She has been trying to reach 'Melanie' for some time, but with Melanie in her honeymoon phase, she has not been able to contact her. Don't worry. She won't get through for a while."
Melanie's smile widened at the message. It was a relief to know Marianne was being kept at a distance. For now, there was one less problem to worry about. She leaned back, but when her eyes caught her reflection in the mirror, her expression changed at once. The smile slipped away, replaced by a frown.
Her gaze fell on the faint marks along her skin. She leaned closer, brushing her fingers over them, and cursed Adam under her breath for leaving them behind. They were light, but they stood out enough to annoy her for now. Any other time, she would have not shied away but today...
With a tired sigh, she reached for her makeup and began to cover them carefully. Each time she checked, another sigh left her, until at last the bruises were hidden.
A knock sounded at the door. Melanie stilled, then straightened slowly. Time to put on the act. Today she was going on a date. With Cadence.
And Dr Jung.
Of course, Cadence didn't know it. And neither did Dr Jung.
But she had her own plan. This was the one chance where she would give to Dr Jung and Cadence. As a repayment for what Dr Jung had helped her discover. If it worked, well and good. If It didn't, then they would follow Adam's plan.
Just as she thought this, there was a knock on the door. Melanie stood up, looked at herself one last time in the mirror and then opened it. Cadence Sint stood there, dressed impeccably. " Ready to leave?"
Cadence gave her a short nod and stepped back. She walked out first, making sure her sleeves were in place. She could feel his eyes following her, but she kept her face calm and steady, ignoring him.
They walked down the hall together. When they reached the front, Dr. Jung was waiting for them. He was not in his usual drab clothes. Thankfully, the man had listened to her instructions. Instead, he wore a dark shirt, neat trousers, and a jacket. He looked like he had dressed carefully for the evening.
Cadence stopped and looked at him closely. His tone was sharp when he asked, "Why are you so dressed up, Dr Jung?"
Dr. Jung looked back at him and answered in a calm voice, even as his look turned thoughtful, "Miss Melody invited me to dinner."
Cadence turned to Melanie at once. His eyes showed his anger and jealousy at having Dr Jung invade their time. Cadence Sint looked ready to kill. "I thought we were going out on a date? Then why did you invite him?"
Melanie looked at him and smiled. She let his question hang for a moment before speaking. "Uh huh. We are going out on a date. Don't worry. I've arranged for someone to meet Dr. Jung."
Cadence frowned. "A double date?" he asked slowly.
"That's right," she said, her smile still in place. "You'll see when we get there. Dr Jung has been stuck with you on that island for the past so many years. You went and met me. But what about him? So, I arranged a blind date for him."
Cadence pressed his lips into a thin line. His eyes stayed on her, dark with suspicion, but he said nothing more.
Dr. Jung, on the other hand, looked bewildered. What was this? Wasn't she supposed to show him that she was not the real Melody? Why was there a dare for him suddenly? But he did not show reaction at all. He only adjusted his jacket and stood waiting. He would definitely ask her what it was she was upto, later.
Melanie looked at both men, then turned and started walking. "Let's go," she said, her tone light.
Cadence followed, his steps heavy, and Dr. Jung came behind him. Melanie felt their eyes on her, one filled with doubt and jealousy, the other unreadable. She did not turn back.
It was enough to know they were both where she wanted them.
As they entered the restuarant and were seated, Cadence turned to her and asked suspiciously, "So, where is his date?"
Before Melanie could answer, a clear voice came from behind them.
"I'm here."
All three of them turned at once. A man walked toward their table. His steps were steady, his smile confident. He looked directly at Dr. Jung, ignored everyone else, and pointed straight at him.
"You must be my date… Dr. Jung," he said with ease. "I am Max."
The words landed like a stone in still water.
Dr. Jung froze in his seat, his eyes fixed on the man now standing at their table. Shock crossed his face, but he quickly schooled his features back into calm. His fingers tightened slightly against the edge of the table, the only sign of his reaction.
Max didn't wait for an invitation. He pulled out the chair next to Dr. Jung and sat down, letting his shoulder brush Dr. Jung's arm as though it were the most natural thing. "You are quite good looking, Dr Jung. I'm glad I said yes to this blind date."
