Chapter 88: The Female Mathematician's Notes
Not many stores around here are open 24 hours.
Chen Yiyang finally found a small hot pot restaurant and went in with the leather jacket girl.
Although this hot pot restaurant is open 24 hours, there's actually only a front desk clerk minding the store late at night.
But Chen Yiyang didn't mind, and had the clerk help prepare a pot. Then he and the leather jacket girl picked some ingredients that still looked fresh.
"Want to drink beer?"
"You didn't ride your motorcycle today, did you?"
"I did."
"Then forget it." For safety's sake, Chen Yiyang said, "Let's go with some sugar-free drinks instead."
So the two of them grabbed some colas, then sat down to wait for the water in the pot to boil.
Chen Yiyang kind of wanted to clear up the misunderstanding from before directly.
But he thought it might be too abrupt to say it straight out.
So he first said to the leather jacket girl,
"Actually, I saw you again a few days ago, but you didn't recognize me."
"Which day?" The leather jacket girl widened her eyes, looking at Chen Yiyang in shock.
"Remember opening the safe? You cracked it in a few tries, stunned me completely."
"I remember now. I was in a hurry that day and didn't wear my contact lenses." The leather jacket girl slapped her thigh.
Turns out this girl is nearsighted.
So Chen Yiyang took the opportunity to bring up his question from that day.
"How did you open the safe that day? It's different from the lock-picking I see in movies."
"Because the safes in TV shows are generally custom-made, and without the code, you can only judge the correct code by the sound when turning the dial.
But in reality, those safes can actually be opened in just a few minutes.
For non-custom home safes, if they're mass-produced, they can definitely be opened without a key.
Because the dial specs from the same manufacturer are the same; only the installation phase or angle is different.
Us lock-pickers store the code books of all major safe manufacturers on our phones.
After you told me the last digits, I could discern the approximate code range by observing the dial movement and noises near those numbers.
Then it's just a matter of testing each number within that limited range. Luckily, it worked on the first try that day."
The leather jacket girl rattled on and on, but Chen Yiyang understood none of it.
This stuff really does require some professional expertise.
"Can I learn this?" Chen Yiyang thought the skill sounded too convenient. He wanted to try and see if he could learn it.
"I can teach you, but you'll need to record it at the police station."
The leather jacket girl told Chen Yiyang, "All lock-picking skills, once you learn them, whether or not you take up related work, must be recorded, with your real information.
If a burglary happens nearby and it's determined a professional lock-picker was involved, the police will contact all registered lock-pickers in the area and ask where they've been recently."
Hearing how troublesome it sounded, Chen Yiyang immediately lost interest in learning the skill.
But it is what it is.
Professional lock-pickers can open safes within minutes. If this skill were simply passed around, safe manufacturers would be the first to go bankrupt.
By the time they'd reached this point in conversation, their pot had boiled over, so they started cooking and eating.
"By the way, what's your name?" Chen Yiyang cooked a piece of beef, then asked the leather jacket girl.
After all this time, he still didn't know her name.
"Me?" The girl pointed at herself, looking at Chen Yiyang.
"Yes." Chen Yiyang nodded.
"Are you kidding me?" The leather jacket girl got upset, "Calling me 'babe' every day and forgetting my name?"
"Actually, the day you rode your motorcycle to the Ghost Market was our first meeting."
Chen Yiyang tried his best to explain what happened that day.
He had originally booked a ride-share, not expecting the leather jacket girl to show up.
It turned out both of their phone numbers and destinations matched, leading to the misunderstanding.
Chen Yiyang felt he'd been quite sincere.
But who would've known, after hearing him out, the leather jacket girl would feel aggrieved and set her chopsticks aside, refusing to eat the hot pot.
"Lately, you've spent less time chatting with me. When I ask, you say work is keeping you busy, and might need a break.
Now you're coming up with this excuse. If you want to break up, just say it clearly instead of making up these stories. You might as well say you have amnesia."
"No, I truly didn't know you before; there really was a misunderstanding between us." Chen Yiyang desperately tried to convince her his story was true.
But at this point, tears were already streaming from the leather jacket girl's eyes.
"If we're breaking up, then we're breaking up. I'm leaving." The leather jacket girl stood up and left the hot pot restaurant.
Chen Yiyang was left sitting dumbfounded.
They hadn't even dated, and yet somehow he got dumped?
What?
What kind of misunderstanding is this that can't be cleared up?
Chen Yiyang rubbed his head full of tangled thoughts.
But now things finally have a little progress.
It looks like someone is dating this leather jacket girl.
It should be online dating, and the two have never met.
Then maybe the leather jacket girl asked to meet, and the other person made up a phone number ending and an address.
Then the two agreed to go to the Ghost Market to have fun.
As a result, Chen Yiyang happened to be at that place on that day.
The phone number ending was also the same.
So the leather jacket girl mistook Chen Yiyang for her online dating partner.
The incident should have happened like this.
Now the leather jacket girl misunderstands that Chen Yiyang wants to break up with her. Probably when she gets home, she'll explain everything to her online date through the phone.
Once the two of them communicate over there, the misunderstanding on Chen Yiyang's side will be cleared up.
So Chen Yiyang stayed in the hot pot restaurant, happily enjoying a small hot pot.
He also took a look at today's intelligence report.
Today's intelligence, in the Weiyang District of West Capital City on Jade Road, inside the scrap station, there is a stack of notes left by a female mathematician. The notes contain the solution formula to a major mathematical problem. You can pick it up as a bargain after buying.
The relevant map and item location are attached on the second page.
This piece of intelligence is quite unique.
After seeing today's intelligence, Chen Yiyang decided to go and pick up this bargain as soon as the scrap station opens the next morning.
He felt that this might not be worth much money, but it would definitely be more important than any of the past bargains Chen Yiyang had picked up.
So after eating the hot pot, Chen Yiyang didn't go home; instead, he walked to a nearby hotel and slept until six in the morning the next day.
He didn't have time for breakfast. After going downstairs, Chen Yiyang took an online ride to the scrap station mentioned in the intelligence.
Although it was just dawn at that time, the scrap station had already started working.
Many people were coming here to sell scraps with their small electric tricycles.
Since the staff was busy receiving goods, no one cared when Chen Yiyang walked into the warehouse.
Following the marked map on the second page of the intelligence, Chen Yiyang made his way to where the waste paper was piled up at the scrap station.
The items here were diverse, including newspapers, office papers, various notebooks, and used books.
In a corner, Chen Yiyang found the stack of notebooks mentioned in the intelligence.
The notebooks were very old, resembling the sort of old-style notebooks given to employees decades ago by their workplaces.
However, the quality of the paper was quite good.
These notebooks were all tied together with a rope. Chen Yiyang simply picked up the entire stack and took it to find the management staff there.
"What are you doing with that?" The scrap station manager noticed Chen Yiyang.
"This stack of notebooks was left by a relative of mine. Her child accidentally sold them, and I want to buy them back."
"Let me see." The manager walked over suspiciously and did a brief examination.
The notebooks didn't seem to have anything special about them, and they were made of ordinary paper.
The manager didn't understand why anyone would go out of their way to buy such things.
So he grabbed a pair of scissors, cut the rope binding the notebooks, and flipped through each one.
He confirmed that these notebooks were just filled with densely scribbled, unreadable symbols, with no hidden valuables inside.
So he spoke to Chen Yiyang, "Give me two hundred bucks, and you can take these notebooks back."
"How about one fifty?" Chen Yiyang said, "I only have two hundred bucks on me, and I need to save fifty to take a taxi back."
"One hundred eighty then. Use twenty bucks to take the bus instead of a taxi."
"Alright." Chen Yiyang acted timidly and took out his phone to transfer one hundred eighty.
Then he repacked the stack of notebooks, held them in his hand, and left the scrap station.
Before entering the scrap station, Chen Yiyang had already called the little accountant, asking for a ride back.
So Chen Yiyang stood by the roadside for a while and soon saw the little accountant arriving in a Red Flag car.
"Boss, you got up so early in the morning just to sell scrap paper at the scrap station?"
The little accountant, with sleepy eyes, complained about Chen Yiyang dragging her up for overtime so early in the morning while opening the door.
"You're getting more talkative recently." After getting in the car, Chen Yiyang took over driving from the little accountant.
He was still a bit worried about the little accountant driving with a prosthetic limb.
"Boss, it's so early in the morning. Can you blame me for being chatty?" the little accountant said while moving to the passenger seat and rubbing her eyes,
"Just getting up at this time once already costs me so much collagen."
"Your baby-faced cheeks, losing a bit of fat would be good." Chen Yiyang couldn't help but pull the little accountant's cheek.
"They're getting chubbier. It's time to lose some weight."
"Boss, you're interfering in employees' private lives," the little accountant protested.
"I'll give you a salary increase for every pound you lose."
"Really?" The little accountant's eyes lit up upon hearing about the salary increase.
"Authentic."
"Then I'll start losing weight tomorrow, no, tonight I want to have barbecue. I'll start losing weight from tomorrow,"
the little accountant said happily, "Boss, you're the best in the world!"
