Chapter 64: A Conversation Between Two Girls
Today, Akeno Himejima had to skip her usual training session. As a result, the role of Asia Argento's teacher temporarily fell to Rias Gremory.
But with that shift came an unintended consequence—almost everyone in the house, even the ever-innocent Asia, had caught on to the fact that something had happened between Akeno and Akira. Something deep. Intimate.
It wasn't exactly subtle.
Early that morning, someone had found a woman's nightwear lying carelessly in the garden. At the same time, both Akeno and Akira were missing from their own rooms. Instead, they were discovered in the guest room closest to that very garden.
Even the most oblivious person could connect the dots.
That night, Rias finally paid Akeno a visit. Her steps were casual, her expression unreadable—but it was clear from her eyes that she already knew everything.
As for Akira, he'd been chased off ahead of time, giving the girls some space to have their little heart-to-heart.
"You really went all in, didn't you, Akeno?"
"Oh? Did you come here just to tease me, Rias?"
"Not at all. I came to congratulate you. After all... my dearest friend has finally found someone to lean on."
"Then I'll accept your congratulations... graciously."
Rias wore a strange, almost mischievous smile. Akeno sighed, already knowing she had no way to deny it.
She had no one to blame but herself. After all, she was the one who'd offered herself so freely last night. Just the day before, she had said she wasn't worthy—had even suggested that Rias should be the one to pursue Akira.
But then, before the words even had time to cool... she'd taken the leap first.
Rias hadn't expected it either. She had approached Akira the previous night for help—but when she left, Akeno had stepped in... and wrapped everything up in one night.
When morning came and Rias spotted Akeno's nightwear abandoned in the same place she and Akira had spoken the night before, she couldn't help but think: Wait... did they actually do it in the garden?
Thankfully, after confirming there were no suspicious traces left behind, she breathed a sigh of relief.
Still, realizing that her best friend had gone from maiden to woman in the span of one night was... a lot to process.
"Um... Akeno. About last night... did it hurt? Like, a lot?"
The question caught Akeno completely off guard. Her face turned red in an instant—it was far too personal.
"If you're that curious... why not try it yourself?"
"D-Don't be ridiculous. I'm still officially engaged to Riser. If I lost my virginity before the engagement's called off, it would tarnish the Gremory name."
"Then why even ask?"
"I was just curious. The maids back home talk about it sometimes. They say the first time is always painful."
"The maids? Who exactly are they serving? Sirzechs-sama...? Or maybe... Zeoticus-sama?"
"E-Eh!? That's not the point!"
The topic had suddenly veered into dangerous territory. In the Underworld, maids were often considered personal property of the household—serving their masters in every sense of the word was part of the job.
But in the Gremory household, the only men that title could apply to were Sirzechs and Rias's father, Zeoticus.
Which meant Rias had, without meaning to, dragged her own father and brother into a very inappropriate conversation.
"No, I think that is the point. Don't tell me... Lady Grayfia and Lady Venelana can't 'satisfy' them anymore?"
"D-Don't say another word, Akeno! We're dropping this topic right now!"
Rias practically jumped in panic. She knew that if this line of conversation went too far, they might end up unleashing a scandal of epic proportions.
Especially in the Gremory family, where women often held more authority than the men.
Her father, Zeoticus Gremory, might hold the official title of head of the house, but her mother—Venelana, a daughter of the prestigious Bael clan—had far more influence and political power.
And while Zeoticus wasn't exactly a henpecked husband, it was clear that most major decisions passed through his wife first.
If Venelana ever found out that Zeoticus had been involved with any of the housemaids... well, that man wouldn't make it out in one piece.
Sirzechs, on the other hand, was harder to pin down. Technically, Grayfia was still classified as a maid, but in practice, she was both his wife and Queen.
Everything he did was under her strict supervision. If there was ever a scandal, it wouldn't be the media that buried him—it would be the Silver Queen herself.
Watching Rias pale with each passing second, Akeno couldn't help but laugh.
It seemed she'd stumbled upon a dangerous little secret—one she could playfully hold over Rias's head in the future.
Still, if she had to guess, Akeno felt that Zeoticus-sama was the more likely culprit. Sirzechs had always been the model of loyalty, while her father... had once been something of a playboy, even by Devil standards.
Seeing Rias curled up on the sofa, clearly regretting ever bringing this up, Akeno felt oddly satisfied.
Apparently, teasing your best friend was just as fun as tormenting enemies.
Maybe that was a dangerous path she needed to watch out for.
Still, it was all in good fun. Just two girls joking around.
"By the way, Akeno... have you really come to terms with everything now?"
The question wiped the grin from Akeno's face. She paused for a moment, then gave a slow, honest nod.
Her expression was calm—no longer haunted by the darkness that used to shadow her features.
"It's not easy... accepting everything. But I've learned to see it from a different perspective. I didn't accept the Fallen Angel blood inside me because I forgave that man... I accepted it because the one I love accepted me—completely. That's all."
"Because he accepted you... huh. Yeah. That sounds like you."
Akeno was the daughter of a shrine maiden and had inherited her mother's lineage as an Onmyouji. Sacrifice was in her blood. She had always been ready to give everything for those she cared about.
"I guess... there's nothing wrong with that, right?"
"Not at all. Honestly, I'm really happy for you, Akeno."
"Thanks."
Their words came from different places—but somehow, they both reached the same destination.
As two girls who understood each other better than anyone else, they didn't need to say much. Sometimes, silence said more than words ever could.
This pre-war training period hadn't just strengthened their powers—it had prepared their hearts as well.
Both Akeno Himejima and Koneko Toujou had managed to break free from their inner chains.
And most importantly... their strength had grown dramatically.
