Chapter 75: The More You Fear, The Unluckier You Get
Louis felt as though his lungs had reached their limit. Every breath set his chest ablaze, a searing pain like fire burning from within. If he were to cough up blood right now, it would probably come out scalding hot.
They had reached the sixth door. Louis's hands trembled again, but this time not from fear.
Perhaps he was exhausted, or his mind couldn't take it anymore.
At that moment, his eyes flew open. He grabbed Layla's hand and yanked her down to the ground.
At the same time, countless strange strands shot out from the door ahead, transforming into numerous arrows that pierced through everything. The last two colleagues were skewered instantly, without even a chance to scream.
Louis lifted his eyes. Blood blurred his vision, but he could still determine what clung to the door.
A creature resembling an octopus—its head bulbous and saggy, its bulging eyes glaring at them.
Its tentacles were grotesquely oversized compared to its body, now swaying and writhing endlessly like a pulsing mound of flesh waiting for a favored prey.
It looked hideous, but Louis felt an odd fondness toward it. At least it resembled an octopus, right? Maybe somewhere deep under the sea was an octopus with tentacles this big. Ha, ha…
Without hesitation, Louis sprang up, baseball bat in hand.
But of course, the octopus-like creature wouldn't let him succeed so easily.
Its tentacles shot out. They looked soft, but Louis wasn't fooled—after all, it had just skewered two of his colleagues.
He dodged swiftly, then suddenly rolled as a tentacle whipped back toward him.
Still, he only had two legs. Against a creature with eight limbs, there was bound to be a struggle.
Before long, Louis was ensnared, the monster's mucous-like slime coating his entire body, leaving him slick and sticky.
Louis's inner radar for cleanliness had gone completely numb, but the stench of the sea and seafood mixed with the scent of blood and corpses assaulted his nose so violently he almost wanted to kill himself right then and there.
"Die, you bastard!"
Louis roared, swinging the baseball bat down onto the monster's tentacle, instantly reducing it to a pile of oozing slime.
The creature let out a deafening, pained roar. It suddenly tilted its body, revealing its underside.
Beneath its flattened head was a massive mouth lined with jagged, shark-like teeth. Deep inside, one eye bled, brimming with unimaginable rage!
It bellowed furiously and lunged straight at Louis!
Louis's entire body stiffened at the sight. He hastily raised the baseball bat, though it was already a bit late…
At that moment, a dark figure suddenly shot forward. Layla kicked hard at the octopus, wielding the high heels in her hands like weapons, striking the monster's head repeatedly. Black ink splattered onto her as the tentacles quickly wrapped around the thrashing creature!
"Louis!" Layla shouted.
Louis's eyes widened. He sprang up, swinging the bat directly at the creature's head. Fresh blood mixed with black ink was sprayed everywhere.
He had grown used to this. After all, they had overcome the previous doors using exactly this method!
"Louis, are you still okay?" Layla asked, holding her high heels with the broken heel, her eyes filled with worry.
Louis pressed his lips together. His pale face was covered in thick blood.
He shook his head, too afraid to speak, fearing that opening his mouth might make him vomit right there.
"Just one last door," Layla murmured, her voice distant.
Louis led the way in silence.
This room was brighter than all the previous ones, though the light was a vivid red, radiating from the walls. The crimson glow made the space feel cramped and stifling, but it couldn't warm Louis's freezing hands and feet.
He stepped slowly toward the stone, every muscle tensed, ready to fight instantly, fearing any monster might suddenly jump out.
Yet, strangely, the path this time was unusually smooth. Louis picked up the paper without encountering any obstacles.
However, his body froze when he read a few words on the small slip. His eyes widened slightly, and his pupils trembled uncontrollably.
[Look behind you]
At the same time, a coarse, sandpaper-like voice—like wind over a desert—suddenly sounded right behind Louis, so close he felt as if it were whispering in his ear:
"Look behind you. Why won't you look behind you? Louis, am I not beautiful?"
"Louis…" The voice overlapped itself now, as if countless people were speaking simultaneously.
"It's okay, it's okay, Louis, really… as long as Layla is Layla, you could smash her head without fear. Louis, you know… You know what kind of person you are…"
What kind of person am I…?
Louis finally mustered all his courage and spun around—but it seemed he had been too optimistic.
Where Layla had been standing, there was no longer the beautiful Layla.
Instead, there was a gaunt body with decayed gray-black skin, flaking off like scraps of paper, constantly falling to the ground.
Her legs were withered, slightly bent, and her arms unnaturally long, hands dragging across the floor.
Her head was far too large for her emaciated body, bald, covered in distinct sores and lesions.
The corners of her mouth drooped, and her empty, black sockets stared at Louis like an abyss.
Seeing Louis glance back, her head suddenly shook violently, sending more chunks of decayed skin falling. The sound of cracking bones and grinding teeth rang endlessly.
"I carefully arranged everything. Everything should have gone smoothly… but you've killed all my pawns. How do you think you should pay for this?!"
The more she spoke, the stronger her head shook.
Louis gasped, struggling even to breathe, making only hoarse, gurgling sounds from his mouth.
Suddenly, Layla's head detached entirely, a piece of spine still trailing behind it, slowly hovering upward.
It twisted and writhed for a moment, then—before Louis could react—her entire body suddenly appeared right in front of him, materializing out of nowhere!
Louis flinched, instinctively stumbling backward.
"Aaaaaa!" he screamed, swinging the baseball bat and striking the monster's head directly!
Crack!
A cracking sound rang out—but it wasn't the monster's head that broke this time—it was the baseball bat!
At the same time, the monster's unnaturally long arms rose and pierced through Louis's abdomen!
