Chapter 70: A New World

Louis lowered his gaze to the chubby cat at his feet and couldn't help but say, "Cute."

666: "..." If it could blush, its face would be red like a ripe tomato.

Louis bent down and scooped it up directly, unable to resist stroking its pure white fur. His face showed genuine fondness and satisfaction—an attitude completely different from before he saw this appearance of 666.

666 was so moved it nearly burst into tears. So this is what it feels like to be loved by one's host!

"From now on, just use this form," Louis said, pressing a little more complicated with his strokes, making 666's eyes narrow into slits.

Louis even sighed softly: "This is the first time a cat has ever stayed still to let me pet it like this..."

666: "..." I think I know why, dear host.

At that moment, Louis was leisurely checking something called the Store. After finishing the task, the world rewarded him with 10,000 credits.

He wanted to see what he could buy with this "money."

Inside the Store were countless items, from ordinary to bizarre. After browsing for a while, Louis realized there wasn't anything that didn't exist here. The only question was whether he had enough credits.

"A resurrection pill? This kind of thing actually exists?" Louis looked at one of the items and couldn't help but speak.

666 quickly replied: "Yes, sir, as long as you have enough credits."

Louis glanced down at the long string of zeros and didn't comment.

"There isn't some medicine that makes me stronger? Like some cultivation elixir or something? Systems like you should really come with buffs like that." Louis continued scrolling through the Store. Although there were potions that could make him stronger for a second, they all had time limits. None were permanent, and every purchase drained credits.

666 had no idea what to say and could only respond softly: "Let's work hard to complete the missions, sir. With enough credits, you can have anything you want."

Louis: "Ha ha."

To avoid being petted bald, 666 quickly said: "The next world has already been scanned. Host is required to proceed with the mission immediately. You are entitled to a one-month rest since you have just completed the first one. Please state your choice."

Louis narrowed his eyes: "Let's go."

666 seemed just as stunned by Louis's sudden diligence. Its voice turned mechanical momentarily: "Commencing transfer, opening passage to the world..."

"Scanning complete. Eerie Monster World. Host, good luck!"

A blinding light swallowed Louis's entire field of vision. Just before he vanished, he faintly heard the mechanical voice, and his heart skipped a beat.

Eerie Monster World?

"Wait... wait a second!"

But realization came too late, crushing the fiery heart of the young man. Louis couldn't even shout again—he had already been sucked into the vortex of transfer. The light was so dazzling that he couldn't open his eyes, and his heartbeat seemed blurred.

oOo

"The next activity in today's teambuilding event is a haunted house tour! This game combines horror elements with an escape room puzzle. It not only challenges your courage, but also tests your wit and team spirit!"

"The first team to complete the challenge and escape the haunted house will receive the grand prize of this teambuilding event! Are you ready?"

Teambuilding—a familiar term for office workers. Leaders always wanted their employees united so the company would feel like one big family.

It was still broad daylight, but after two activities earlier, some people were excited, some only joined to save face in front of their bosses, and others were visibly exhausted.

"Playing a haunted house game in the morning? Why not save it for the evening to make it scarier?"

"Good point, ha ha ha."

"Once you're inside, morning or night doesn't matter—it's all dark and terrifying!"

Amid the crowd, a figure hardly worth noticing shrank into a corner.

He looked tall, but his slightly hunched back made his presence seem smaller. Thick glasses covered half his face, his long hair nearly hiding his eyes.

It seemed like someone mentioned him, but he wasn't paying attention.

"Fall into a haunted house the moment I arrive? If you've got a grudge against me, say it outright, you stupid fat cat!"

That's right, this young man was Louis, who at that moment was furiously cursing 666 in his head.

666 could have cried oceans of tears. Barely a minute ago, Louis had been tenderly petting it with that doting expression—and now he was calling it fat? Heavens above, how shameless, how heartless! Where was the fairness, where was the humanity?!

But it couldn't get a word out. It was silenced when it finished explaining what it knew about this world.

Indeed, after just one completed world, it hadn't even leveled up to one, and Louis had already tossed it aside in utter disdain.

666 could only hide in a corner and cry, wishing it could drown its sorrows in alcohol.

Louis looked at the crowd before him while also checking the memories in his head.

This body was indeed his, yet it carried another set of memories—another life.

Louis found it strange, but he quickly sorted through them.

This version of Louis had lived a plain and uneventful life. Other than being an orphan, there wasn't much turmoil. He went to university, found a job, and had a quiet but not timid personality. Because of his oddness, colleagues disliked him, but he didn't care—their attempts to ostracize him hardly affected him.

It felt like he lived like a string of programmed data, without a soul.

That may be why Louis could take his place.

But now, there was a far more pressing issue.

Because Louis… was afraid of ghosts.

To be precise, he feared any beings that defied human comprehension. For example, a giant—Louis wasn't afraid. A tiny person—Louis wasn't scared. But someone whose arms suddenly stretched to the ground—Louis was terrified.

A dog with human legs—terrified.

A dog walking on two legs—terrified.

A butterfly with a human face—terrified.

A skeleton that could still move—terrified.

And in a haunted house, things like skeletons were guaranteed.

What's worse, in this world, who knew whether the things inside were props or the real deal!

Louis nearly used every ounce of willpower to keep his legs from trembling, forcing his face to stay calm.

But it was only a facade. When he glanced at the banner above the haunted house, he could feel his heart pounding wildly, as if it might burst out of his throat at any second!

"Louis, Louis!"

Louis jolted violently and turned his head. A female colleague in front looked at him in puzzlement. Seeing him finally snap back to his senses, she said, "Hurry up, everyone's gone in already. What's wrong with you?"

Someone ahead snickered: "Louis is so scared he's about to wet himself, ha ha ha, such a coward."

"Don't say that, I'm terrified too!" another voice piped up loudly.

"It's just a haunted house, what's there to be afraid of?"

Just a haunted house?

Louis: "..." Ha ha, with that kind of attitude, they all looked exactly like cannon-fodder characters doomed to die in the first episode. And right now, he was stuck in that group destined to die first!
